To all whom it may concern:
Be it knownvthat 1,. JAMES BARRY, citizen of the United States, residing at Grafton, in "the county of Yolo and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements inRailway Ties; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such aswill enableothers skilled in the art to which it appertains ,to make and use the same. n 1

tion 11' will be fitted into'the recess 6 and the shoulders 7 rest upon the side arms-l0. tFrom'this, it will-be apparent that if the two preferred that the'tie sections be suitably reeniorced as shownat 12 at ztheir connect- 'ing' ends so as to provide for sufficient strength at this point and thereby prevent any breakage on the part of the connecting member. When it is desired to use this tie on roadsin which one or both rails serve as conductors of electricity for signaling or other purposes,-i t is preferred to have a layer of 1I1SL1l3t1I1g or non-conductive material arranged between the two tie sections as illustrated in Figure i; said insulating material being indicated by the numeral 13 and being placed in such a positionas to insulate the two tie sections and prevent the electric current from passing from one tie section to the other.
The upper face of each tie section is provi ded with a transverse rail receiving recess 1% and it will be noted :lrom the illustration given in Figure 2, that these recesses are disposed at oblique angles with respect to the longitudinal center lines of the ties and the said Walls of said recesses are provided with ShOuldcrportiOIlS arranged at diagonally the base flanges of the rails Will engagewith the shoulders 15 andbe disposed beneaththe flanges 17 formed through the medium of the undercut side w alls of the recesses 14- and by this means the rails 16 are, forced into binding engagement with theshoulder portions 15 andwin order to provide for additional means for supporting the rails, suitable upstanding flanges 18 are formed upon the outer sides of the recesses l l, said flanges being provided With enlarged end portions 19 which extend upwardly and engage beneath the tread of the: rail as illustrated in Figure 1, to thus brace the rail from the out side and also to prevent any separating movement of the rails When placed in their respective positions Within the recesses 14.
In the general construction of the tie sections as illustrated, they are-of I-shaped formation in cross-section and at the point Where the recesses 14: are formed, they are reenforced With suitable supporting plates or shelves 19 forming suitable seats for the rails 16, said shelves or plates being supported at each end by means of the bracing ribs 20 which are formed integral with the shelves l9 and with the body portion oft-he tie sections.
it will be noted that in forming the recesses 14L in the two tie sections, that they are disposed at an angular position With respect to the tie sections and the side Walls thereof are undercut to form grooves providing the overhanging flanges 17 which embrace the top portion of the base flanges of the rail to securely retain the rails in position when disposed at right angles to the tiesand as certain portions of the base flanges engage With the shoulders 15, it Will prevent longitudinal movement on the part or" the rail sections. In order to provide further means for preventing movement oi? the rails 16 atter bein ")laced Within the recesses 11.4. the b 7 flanges 18 will engage over the base flanges ol the railsand extend upvvardlyonto the web of the rails to a point beneath the tread portions, thus not only forming a brace to prevent separating movement of the rails, but to term additional. binding means adapted to co-act with the binding engagement with too base flanges of the rails on the shoulders 15 ofthe tie. to thus prevents-11y movement on the part of the rails after being placed Within therecesses lt will be noted in Figures 1 and 2, that I have provided means for the use of side track rails in connection with my improved tie and to this end, the recesses 21 are formed in the tie adjacent the recesses 1a and are provided with the rail engaginglflanges 22. Thus. it will be noted that a side track can be. readily positioned with respect to the main track and it is to be understood that the recesses 21 Will vary in distance from the main: track recesses, according to the curve of the side track to be installed. When the tie is in. use on bridges, .trestles, or tne like, Where stringers are used for securing the ties in position, l provide apair of shoulders upon each oi the tie sectionsand on thebot ton thereot, said shoulders being generally indicated by the numeral 23,.and disposed, in spaced relation as. indicated in Figure 1 for engagement upon opposite sides of the sringers to securely retain the ties in position. It will, also be noted that the extreme outer end 01". each of the tie sectionsis providedwith an upstanding flange 24: which Will prevent the car Wheels from leaving the ties it they should accidentally be caused to leave the rail treads.
