WALL BOARD STRUCTURE.
APPucAUoN FILED SEPL e, 1921.
Patente Nov. 7, 1922,
ROBERT J. JOHNSTON, OF'
To all lwhom. may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT J'. JOHNSTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Wall-Board Structures, of which the following is a complete specification.
The present invention relates `to wall board, such as is used. for providing an in- Iterior wall facing, and aims to provide an improved wallI board construction made up of wall board sectionsi 'adapted to be.` so matched together as to present a practically -unbrokenand continuous wall surface, the
joints or seams between the sections of the Wall board'being maintained substantially air tight and proof against the passage oi insects orvermin.
To this end, l have devised a wall board structure made up in sections, each of which is formedwith lips extending longitudinally along its opposite side edges, and continuous with one face ofthe section, and arrange these sections in alternately reversed relation so that the side lips are matchedtogether in lapping relation, resulting in a wall board of perfectly even and uniform cross-section throughout and adapted to be maintained in this condition by securing means applied to the seamsor joints formed by the overlapping lipsof the adjoining wall board sections.
With the^ foregoing general objects in view, the invention will now be described- `b reference tothe accompanying drawing illustrating one form of construction which l have ldevised for embodying the proposedimprovements, after whichV the novel fea-a tures-therein will be and claimed. A
ln the drawingi IFigure l is a perspective viewillustrating a Wall board Y in accordance with the present invention;
Figure 2 is an elevation showing a portiii of a wall board structure having a plura 't sectignsl matched together as the improvements; and
Figure -3 is a horizontal particularly set Jforth 'proposed by .the wall board structure.A 1Referring now to the'drawing 1n detail,
this illustrates the' invention as embodied in any suitable wallbeard s niaterial,1 such as is commonly made up in sheets, sections or anel ora section constructed of the Wallbcard cen of the improved wallboard panels or` sectional view, 1of

panels, of strawboard, wood pulp, or wood bre and plaster, these materials `being' `treated by any preferred inode of molding operation'for producing Wall board sheets 60 .or sections of the properV size and dimens1ons.` lIn the present case, the invention comprises as one unit, a wall board section 6 of any required length and width, and
so formed or molded as to produce along the 65 opposite side edges of the section or panel suitable lips vor flanges 7V which (are continuous with one oi' the faces of the panel as clearly represented in Figures 1, 3 and 5. By means of this construction, it will be 7e seen that when a plurality of the sections or panels 6 are to\ be. assembled in form-v ing the interior of awa-ll, the lips or flanges 7 are adapted Vto be matched together in lapping relation, by the simple 75 operation' of alternately reversing the consecutive sections or vpanels f6, as shown in Figures 2 and 3. This results irriieatV` and Y close fitting joints or seams along the over'- lapping thickness of the material at these points,
and no additional securing means being required, aside from the usual tacks or nails d, used for tacking 'the wail board in position. board section 6 may be so chosen as to span the distance between the joists or studs 9, so that the overlapping lips or iianges of adjoining sections will come over the several joists 9, and the nails 8 driven alongside 0e the overlapping lips and to the joists. u
lt will thus be seen that l'have devised a practical and at'the same time extremel thereby secured simple Wall ,boardlconstruction for et` v ing the objects ofthe invention. 'Ihe sections or panels@ are'pall made' in duplicate forni, so that a-Ethat. is required in the'as sembling'v of the sections is the reversal of every other section in order to match up the ice lips 7 inthe manner iliustrated. While A thisresults in the width fevery other panel truction being just slightly narrower or widerfthan the next` adjacent lips 7 an the reversal ot consecutive sections 6, the lips "i may made so narrow that 'this' diderence 'in `thevvidths cf' the v I pmels mayfbemade sc small as to be un noticeable. Theimproved constructionzprovides a solid, even, uniform, and unbroken 'Wan Surface which may ets@ te met@ rrecrenti A ps or 'flanges 7, withme entra t@ ln practice, the width of the wall aneis, due w the lapping et the ice' lie tieally air tight, and the lappingcharacter of the joints or seams between the sections is such that these seams or joints can be so tightly sealed as to exclude insects or vermlniof every nature.
What I claim is:
1. A Wall board structure comprising, in
combination with Wall studs a plurality ofA Wall board sections, each having longitudinal lips along the opposite sides thereof and continuous with one of its faces,
v said sections being alternatelyreversed with.
the adjoining sections having their lips in 'lapping relation, andthe combined thicknes's. of each pair of lapped lips equaling j the thickness of the main body portions of sald sections and means for securing said jacent each of its lip portions and into said studs for securing said sections thereto with the lips in lapped relation.
In Witness whereof I hereunto signature. J
