ELMER, GEORGE GARTIN, OF CLAREMONT, NEW HAMPSHIRE, ASSIGNOB TO SULLIVAN MACHINERY COMPANY, A CORPORATION 01 MASSACHUSETTS.
DRILLING APPARATUS.
Application filed December 30, 1919. Serial No. 348,484.
To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, ELMER GEORGE GAR- TIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Claremont, in the county of Sullivan and State of New'Hampshire, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Drillin Apparatus, of which the following is a in clear, and exact specification.
My invention relates to drilling apparatus.
Its object is to provide a simplified and improved form of mounting for a rock drill. Another object of my invention is to provide an improved and simplified form of tool mounting whereby the drill and its feed mechanism may be moved toward and from the face of the work. A further object of my invention is to provide an improved mounting inwhich the process of changing steels is greatly simplified. I
In the accompanying drawings I have shown, for purposes of illustration, one form which my invention may assume in practice. I
In these drawings,
Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a drill provided with a mounting embodying the illustrative form of my invention, parts being broken away to facilitate illustration.
' Fig. 2 is a detail transverse section on the line 2-2 of Fig." 1.
In the drawings, a base 1 is provided, herein in the form of ,a trunnion adapted to be mounted upon any suitable support, and
on this base 1 is adjustably mounted, in an improved manner hereinafter described, a
percussive motor 2 actuating a drill steel 3, the operation of the percussive motor being controlled by a usual manual throttle valve 4 and-its feed effected in a well known manner by the feed screw 5 and handle 6. In my improved mounting, I have shown the percussive tool mounted upon a shell .7
- of well known construction with which the feed screw cooperates, but instead of mountingthe shell directly onthe base 1, I have rigidlysecured in parallel relationship to the-shell a bar 10. This bar is mounted in a guidefll secured to the base member 1' and may be suitably clamped in any desired position by the" guide 11, which is, herein, of
the split type, a clamp bolt 12 and nut 13 being 'shown herein as the clamp applying means. It will be obvious that by releasing the 'nut 13, the entire shell may be moved eral direction about the guide 11 or that it may be rigidly secured in any desired position with respect thereto.
The operation of my device in the chang ing of a drill steel is as follows: Let it be assumed that the usual limit of movement of the shell is materially less than the length of steel in use because of the depth of hole. It Wlll then be obvious that, as the steel cannot be moved laterally at its rear end after disengagement from the chuck to clear the percusslve motor'when the latter is in retracted osition, the tool cannot be withdrawn. ith my improved device, all that. is necessary to do, however, is, having released the tool from the chuck, to move it forward sufficiently to clear the front end of the chuck, and release the nut 13, move the percussive motor laterally about the guide 11 as a pivot and draw the steel straight out. A longer steel may then be inserted into the hole and the motor 2 swung back into position and the steel inserted again in the chuck.
It is thus seen that I have provided a mechanism whereby the position of the shell may bereadily adjusted, and that by the adjustable mounting I have provided means for enabling the ready change of steels.
While I have in this application specifically described one form which my invention may assume in practice, it will be understood that this form of the same is shown for purposes of illustration and that the invention may be modified and embodied in other forms without departing from its spirit or the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In combination with a rock drill, a shell upon which said rock drill is longitudinally adjustable, a base, and means for adjusting said shell longitudinally with respect to said base and about said base as an axis.
2. In combination with a rock drill having a mounting relative to which it is longitudi- I 3. In" combination with a rock drill v a 11 mounting comprising a base, a shell, said rock drill being mounted on and longitudinally adjustable with respect to said shell, a bar attached to said shell in parallel relationship thereto, a guide for said bar secured to said base, and means to clamp said bar in said ide. A r
4. n combination with a rock drill having a mounting relative to Which it is longitudinally adjustable, a second mounting for said first mentioned mounting comprising a guide, a bar'attached to said first mentioned mountin extending through said guide, said guide and bar constituting means permittin mounting longitudinally with respect to said guide or about the same as an axis, and means for retaining said first mentioned mounting in such adjusted position.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
ELMER GEORGE GARTIN.
adjustment of said first mentioned 15
