BRASS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fenton. in the county of liossuth and State oi lowa have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Self-Extinguishing Lamps; and I do hereby declare the follow ing to be a full, clear, and exact description of: the invention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which itappertains to make and use the same. 7
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in self-extinguishing lamps and has for its primary object the provision of a device of the character stated which is especially adaptable for use by a person when retiringand going to sleep and which will give the person suilicient time to become asleep before the flame of the lamp is automatically extinguished. A. further object of this invention is the provision of a thermostat which is gradually affected by the heat from the flame of the lamp to release a spring actuated element for extinguishing the flame in a. given length of time.
A. further object of this invention is the provision of a self-extinguishing lamp of the above stated character, which shall be simple, durable and elflcicnt, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With these and other objects in view as will become more apparent as the description proceeds, the invention consists'in certain novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
For a complete understanding of my invention, reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawings in which Figure 1 is a side elevation, illustrating a lamp extinguisher constructed in accordance with my invention and having the burner cap swung to an open position,

Referring in detail to the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates as an entirety lamp burner including a body portion 2 provided with the usual screw threaded neck 3 adapted to be threaded into the bowl of a lamp (not shown). A cup 4t is hinged to the body 2 and is adapted to be swung over a wick tube hav ng the usual wick 6 therein. in extinguishing element 7 consists of an angle shaped plate 8 provided with legs 9 that are journaled on pins 10 secured to the sides of the wick tube. A spring 11 is secured to one oi the pins 10 and to bile of the legs 9 for normally urging the extinguishing element over the wick tube and its wick "for the purpose of extinguishing the flame thereon. A flexible supporting rod 12 is secured to the body 2 adjacent the wick tube and supports a thermostat 13 adjacent to the upper end of the wick tube and wick so that the heat from the flame on the wick will gradually affect the thermostat. A bracket l l is secured to the body 2 under the thermostat 13 and has hinged thereto a trlp element 15 provided with a tongue 16. The thermostat 13 is in the form of a receptacle 17 which is adapted to be partially filled with alcohol or slmilar fluid which wilh when heated, cause said casing to expand. .5. pin 18 is secured to the casing 17 and engages the trip element The walls of the casing 17 are capable of flexing according to the expansion and contraction of the fluid within said receptacle for the purpose of actuating the trip 15.
One of the pins 10 is provided with a vertical extension 19 on which is journaled a latch arm 20 having a tongue 21 formed on one end adapted to engage one of the legs 9 of the extinguishing element 7 for holding the same away from the wick and wick tube and against the tension of the spring 11. A tongue 22 is formed on the other end of the latch member 20 and is adapted to abut the tongue 16 of the trip element 15 so that when said trip element 15 is affected by the thermostat 13, it dis'engages the tongues 16 and 22 and permits the tongue 21 to move away from the extinguishing element under the influence of the spring 94%, or in other words the latch member 20 swings on the verview illustrating a tical extension 19 freeing the tongue 21 trom the extinguishing element 7 which is forced over the Wick and Wick tube by the spring 11 to extinguish the flame.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying draW- ings, it will be noted that the action of the thermostat 13 is gradual and requires a given period of time before the fluid therein has been oi-cpanded sufliciently to disengage the trip 15 from the latch member 22.
A red is connected to the flexible supporti element 12 and is adjustably connecter to a bracket 26 by nuts 27 so that the location oi? the thermostat 13 in respect to the trip element 15 can be varied for the purpose of lengthening and shortening the time required to actuate the device by the heat from the flame oi the lamp.
Having; thus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. A flame extinguishing means comprising an extinguisher, means to urge it into extinguishing position, a laterally movable detent to normally prevent movement of the extinguisher, means tensioned to ret act the detent to release said extinguisher, a lever to normally abut the detent to prevent retraction thereof, and a thermostatic means operable by the flame and through rise in the temperature thereof to shift the lever to release the detent.
2. A flame extinguishing means comprising an evtinguisher a thermostat to be heated by the flame, means suspending the thermostat for lateral adjustment relatively to the flame to control the time interval before extinction of the flame, mechanism to clamp said means in adjusted position, trip means operable to release the extinguisher controlled by the operation of the thermostat through rise in the temperature thereof, including a lever-tor vertical tilting through expansion of the 'hermostat directly, :1 later ally movable lever to abut the first lever, said tilting movement serving'to move the first lever out Ofll the path ot movement of the second lever to release the latter, a
