ame S AYES JAMES E. NYSE, OF GREAT CROSBY, ENGLAND.
LIFEBOAT.
Application filed January 31, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JAMES EDWARD WVYsn, a subject of the King of England, residing at Great Crosby, in the county of Lancaster, England, have invented new and useful Improvements in and Connected with Lifeboats, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has reference to ships life boats for saving life at sea, more especially in cases of wrecks of vessels, and also the launching of same.
The life boat will be provided with a deck at the ends, with hatches in it, both fore and aft, fitted with hinged hatch doors or covers, and also between the ends; the hatches being for getting into and out of the boat, and manipulating it at the two ends. The boat may be similarly formed and. constructed at both ends and adapted to receive a rudder; and the bow and stern are elevated and formed somewhat after the whale-boat type of bow, and closed, the object of which is to aiford lifting power, and for prevention of the boat diving into the sea, and generally providing buoyancy forward and aft for the purpose hereinafter explained, and be self righting.
Along the deck, say along the centre of same fore and aft a tabernacle mast would be fitted and normally stowed on the deck, and inside the boat under the covers is formed a cockpit for housing the passengers when the covers are in place, exit being had by way of the hatchways at each end.
The deck covering the well or body of the boat may be held down in position by lushings or screw devices from the thwarts.
The mode of launching the boats consists in mounting same on wheeled cradles running on parts disposed transversely across the deck of a ship, and which will be nor mally held in position by moorings fitted with a slip hook or other readily disengag ing device, which if desired may be adapted to be operated in any known suitable way from within the boat, by the controllers at the ends, or from outside, so that when it is desired to free the boat it can be at once effected.
The launching of the boat is effected by gravity, namely, when the ship has rolled on. one side, the holding means are let go or released, and then the cradle with the boat will run down across the deck and through the momentum of travel the boat will pro- Serial No. 141,517.
ject itself into the sea at an angle; the end of the boat being of the form described in striking the water, it will produce a lifting effect above referred to, so that it will not dive deep down into the sea; and being enclosed the passengers or others are prevented from getting wet and the boat gen erally protected from the sea.
All the appliances or utensils necessary for life boats may be used and suitably disposed in the boat.
The invention is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation showing the boat and trolley; Figure 2 is a plan, and Figure 3 a cross section. v
In the drawings, 1 is the temporary deck, consisting of a plurality of separate covers for the well or body of the boat, resting on the bulwarks 2 at one end, and at the other on a central longitudinal member 3, and they are held down in position by means of battons 4 which are removable, but are held down in position by lashings 4* to the thwarts 5 of the boat; 6 are the decks of the buoyancy chambers 7 at each end of the boat, which are raised as shown, and constructed similarly to those of self righting life boats, so that the boat is self righting.
8 are the hatches or cook pits at each end of the boatprovided in the deck portions 9, extendin down from the decks 6, to the level of tie gunnels 2 and the deck or covers 1; and 10 are the hinged doors or covers for the hatches or cock pits. Thus when the doors 10 are closed and the deck or covers 'I are on, the boat is completelv closed or decked. A
The hatches ()r cock pits are for the [HIV-- Doses hcrei nabo \"e described.
The cock pits 8 have floors ll for those in charge of the boat to stand upon.
Each end of the boat is provided with a metal keel member 12, a member 13 in line with the upper part of the stem and stern of the boat, and a strut 14: between the stem and stern, and the meeting points of the bars 12 and 13; and a rudder pintle 15 projects up from the angle of these members 12, 13, 141, as shown, and the lower eye 16 of the rudder 17 fits over the pintle.
The rudder yoke 17 is operated by a yoke lever 18 on a pivot 19 just near the cock pits 8, the yokes 17 and 18 being connected by lines 20.
In the case of a boat being launched from the boat deck transversely on rails in the manner described, when the ship has a list to one side, a rudder would be preferably shipped at both ends.
The boat in the case shown is provided with two tabernacle masts 21 pivoted at 22 to the socket standards 23, which extend down to the bottom oi the boat.
VJ hen the boat is adapted to be launched by gravity over the side of the ship, it is supported upon a wheeled cradleor trolley 25, the boat itself may be held by moorings 2% as shown; and when these moorings are released the trolley with the boat on it, is free to run to the side of the ship according to the list, and when it is overboard the cradle can free itself from the boat as it is freely supported by checks 26 of the cradle.
When the ship boat is launched with its two rudders, one of them can be removed by a suitable tackle, according to which direction the vessel is to be sailed,
l/Vhat is claimed is 1- A life boat of double ended form having an exaggerated sheer, buoyancy chambers formed in each end portion, the top of said chambers being formed in a raised deck portion, the portion between said buoyancy chambers forming a cockpit, a central longitudinal beam extending across the cockpit in the plane or the gunwales, thwarts extending transversely of the cockpit, a plurality of sectional deck forming covers for the cockpit adapted to seat on the longitudinal beam and the gunwales, means for removably lashing the covers to the thwarts, a slanting deck portion connecting the raised deck with the deck covers at each end of the cockpit, a hatchway formed in the slanting deck portion communicating with the cockpit when the covers are in place, and hatch covers secured to the slanting deck portion for closing the hatchway, the stems of said boat being formed to have a rudder shipped at each end.
In testimony whereof l have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JAMES E. WYSE.
