FIG.EI.
INVE NT 4mm I 7 M ATTUHNEYE Patented Nov. 7, 1922.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WALTER T. STALL, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR T0 WALTER, T, STAL AND CHARLES H. DEAN, COPARTNERS, DOING BUSINESS AS STALL 8t DEAN MANU- FACTURING COMPANY, OF BROCKTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
SWEATBAND.
Application filed August 30, 1921.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WALTER T. STALL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sweatbands, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to sweat bands worn by players of athletic games to protect the eyes and glasses from persplration, and is embodied in a sweat band adapted to be worn as a fillet, surrounding the wearers head, and comprising an absorbent front section adapted to bear on and conform closely to the forehead, and an elastic rear section adapted to bear on the back of the head, and to contract the band upon the head to maintain it in an operative position and cause a close conformation of the front section to the forehead.
The invention is embodied in the improvements which I will now proceed to describe and claim.
Of the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification,
Figure 1 is a perspective view, showing a sweat band embodying the invention, the front section being formed as a'pouch, and shown as partially opened to expose a portion of an absorbent filling therein.
Figure 2 is a section on the plane indicated by line 2-2 of Figure 1.
' Figure 3 is a perspective view of a sweat band, the front section of which is differently constructed.
Figure 4 is a section on the plane indicated by line 4-4 of Figure 3.
The same reference characters indicate the same parts in all of the figures.
My improved sweat band is composed of a front section 12, adapted to bear on and conform closely to the forehead, and a rear section 13, adapted to bear on the back of the head, said sections being suitably connected to form a head-encircling band or fillet.
The section 12 is made of flexible absorbent material, and the section 13 is a piece of elastic webbing, secured at its ends to the ends of the front section, and adapted when normally contracted, to hold the band in close contact with the zone of the head which it embraces, and prevent it from slipping down.
Serial No. 496,917.
Figures 1 and 2 show the front section formed as a pouch, having an openmouth at one edge, and a flap 14, adapted to cover the mouth, suitable snap fasteners being prov ded to hold the cover 14 in its closed position.
As shown by Figure 2, one of the fasteners may be composed of a socket member 16. attached to the outer side of the pouch, the other fastener member being a stud member 17, fastened to the flap 14. Any suitable number of fasteners may be provided two being shown in the present case.
18 represents an absorbent pad inserted in the pouch above described. Said pad may be composed of a body or central portion of absorbent material, reinforced, if desired, bV facing layers of absorbent cloth. The pad may be readily removed and washed, or substituted by a clean pad. The band is of washable construction, so that it mav'be kept in a clean and sanitary condition. if
I do not limit myself to the employment of a pouch adapted to be opened and closed. As shown by Figures 3' and 4, the front section 12 of the band may be permanentlv closed upon a pad 18 the front section and pad being washable as a single part.
I claim:
1. A sweat band, adapted to be worn as a fillet surrounding the wearers head, comprising an elongated absorbent pad adapted to conform closely to the forehead, a flexible casing enclosing said pad and having the portion thereof that contacts with the wearers forehead of absorbent material. said pad and casing constituting a front section adapted to contact throughout the area of its inner face with the forehead, and an elastic rear section connected to the ends of the pad containing casing and adapted to confine the front section in operative position.
2. A sweat band adapted to be worn as a fillet surrounding the wearers' head, and comprising a pouch of flexible absorbent material adapted to bear on and conform closely to the forehead, and adapted to be opened, and provided with means whereby it may be closed, an absorbent pad removably inserted in the pouch, the said pouch and pad constituting a front section which is wholly of absorbent material, and an elastic rear section adapted to bear on the back of the head, and to be extended by the application of the band to the head, the contraction of said rear section confining the band in its operative position, and causing a close conformation of the front section to the forehead.
3. A sweat band adapted to be worn as a I fillet surrounding the wearers head, and
the head, the contraction of said webbing confining the band in its operative position, and causing a close conformation of the front section to the forehead.
4. A sweat band adapted to be worn as a fillet surrounding the Wearers head comprising an elastic rear section, to enable the J and to fit heads of different sizes, and a front section connecting the, ends of the elastic section and formed entirely of material which is more absorbent than the rear section and adapted toconform throughout the area of its inner face with the forehead, said front section including a pad formed by a body, facing layers, and means passing through the body and connecting the facing layers.
In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature.
WALTER T. STALL.
