OF MILXVAUKEE, WISCONSIN, A COEPORIM CHIMNEY-LIFT HEAD.
Application filed October 12, 1921.
To all whom it may concer /1 lie it known that l, ..-\nnnno J. KlEUiil-UWEIL a citizen of the United States, and resident of lrlilwaukee, in the county of Milwaukee and State of W'isconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chimney- Lift Heads; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof.
lrly invention relates to a new and improved chimney lift head which adapted to be used in connection with an oil burner for the purpose of raising the chimney to obtain accessto the wick in order to light the same or for other purposes.
The object of the invention is more particularly to provide means for securing the head to the lift rod whereby the same may be easily and cheaply manufactured and will at the same time be securely held so that it may not become loose or disarranged.
In describing my invention. reference will be had to the accompanying drawing. in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view cutting the lift head on the line 11 of Figure 3.
Figure 2 is a vertical sectional view through the lift head taken. on the line 22 of Figure 3. l
Figure 3 is a plan view of the lift head, and
Figure 4 is a plan view of the blank from which the attaching clip is formed.
Referring more specifically to the drawing the numeral. 1 designates a burner which is carried by the extensible pipe 2 from which the oil is supplied. A chimney 3 normally rests on the burner and is provided internally with a baffle plate 4 which rests on the annular rib 5 of the lift head 6 by means of which the chimney may be raised to provide access to the wick. The lift head 6 is carried at the upper end of a lift rod 7 which is guided for vertical movement through the central orifice 8 in the burner and an opening in the bracket 9 which is secured to the feed pipe. The lower end of the lift rod is provided with a-bent portion 10 which in its lowermost position engages the horizontal. supply pipe 11. A laterally extending por- Serial No. 507,253.
chimney in its raised position the extremity 13 of the rod being bent downwardly so as to engage the front side of the supply pipe when the rod is in this position.
For the purpose of securely attachini the lift head to the upper end of the red a nut 14. is threaded on the upper end thereof, the threads being cut on the rod only far enough for the nut to be secured thereto but not allowing the rod to protrude from the upper surface of the nut. A clip 15 is formed from a blank of the shape shown in Figure 4 and folded over the sides of the nut, an opening 16 being formed centrally of the clip to permit the rod to pass therethrough. The ends 17 of the clip are made of the proper length and for the clip which secures the same, the
head will be securely held between the prongs 17 which engage the under sides thereof and the prongs 18 which are securely clinched to the upper side thereof. It will also be seen that by means of this construction the cost of manufacturing and assembling will be reduced to a minimum at the same time providing an attaching means which cannot become loose or disarranged.
I claim as my invention 1. In a device of the character described, a lifting rod mounted for vertical adjustment, a nut threaded on the upper end of the rod an attaching clip folded about the nut, and a lifting head secured thereto.
2. In a device of the character described, a lifting rod mounted for vertical adjustment, a nut secured to the upper end of the rod, a lifting head seated on the upper face of said nut, an attaching clip having two opposite sides folded around the sides of the nut and abutting the under side of the head and extending through the plate and clinched to its upper side.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto set my hand at Milwaukee. in the county of Milwaukee and State of isconsin.
ALFRED J. 'KIECKHEFER.
