To all whom it' may concern."
Be it known that I, TANDY A. BRYsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cfroy, in the county of Rensselaer and State a of New York, have invented new and useful improvements in Ventilated Driving Mechanism, of which the following is a speci-- iication.
The invention relates to centrifugal mania chines, and more especially to the. driving and controlling means, including I cooling and ventilating devices therefor.
Objects and advantages of the invention will be set forth in part hereinafter, and in it part will be-obvious herefrom, the same being attained and realized through the instrumentalities and combinations pointed out in the appended claims.
The invention consists in the novel parts, constructions, arrangements, combinations and improvements herein shown and described. I
The accompanying drawings herein referred to and constituting a part hereof, illustrate one embodiment of the invention, and together with the description serve to explain the principles thereof.

Fig. 1 is a vertical central section of a centrifugal machine embodying the invention; Pig. 2 is a detail, in central vertical section, through the combined belt pulley and brake; 1535 Fig. 3 is a fragmentary bottom plan, looking at the pulley of Fig. 2 from below; and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary detail in elevation of the suspension and brake control.
Referring to the accompanying drawings,
illustrating by way of example the present preferred embodiment of the invention, the -same is shown applied to a suspended centrifugal, the invention in certain of its-features being especially applicable to machines of this kind, although in other features it is also applicable toother kinds of. centrifu- A casing 1 is shown, supported in sta-. tionary position in any suitable manner, and
suspended for rotation therewithin is a has ket 2, within which basket the material to be dried or separated is placedin the usual manner. As shown, the basket 2 has a bottom discharge through the'passages 3, these passages being provided with a closing valve es 4, which is slidable along the centrifugal shaft to open and close the discharge passages -3. The basket 2 is fixed to a shaft 5 by means of a sleeve 6, the shaft supporting and whirling the basket during the separatit ing or drying operation.
The shaft .5 is supported in the present embodiment by a resilient oscillatory bearing, the entire bearing and driving means being mounted upongirder plates 7 and 8. The
bearing is designed and adapted to carry unbalanced loads in the basket and to absorb yrato'ry movement and side pressure cause by the operation of the machine with an unbalanced load. The bearing may be of it any suitable or approved form, so as concerns its details of construction, as emloyed with the present invention. I
The shaft t'i, as shown, has a resilient hearing of any suitable or approved design, vario-us forms of such bearings being well known, enclosed within a housing 20, the shaft 5 having oscillatory or gyratory movementupon its bearing within the housing. The housing 20 is preferably integral with so or attached to a casing 22, later to be de scribed in detail, the casing being mounted upon and fixed to the girders 7 and The driving and controlling means comprise, in the preferred embodiment, a combined belt-driven pulley and brake, and. therewith the cooling and ventilating means and means for conveying away all belt and brake dust which might otherwise fall into the basket andimpair or damage the mateto rial being operated upon. In the. embodied form of such means, a hub 26 is fixed to the shaft 5, just below the bearing, by suitable means such as a clamping screw 27. From the upper part of the hub 26 the body 28 95 extends outwardly, and the cylindrical portion of the pulley extends or projects in both directions from the body 28. The lower part of such cylindrical extension is formed into a brake drum 29, and the, upper part of I the cylindrical extensionis formed intoa belt pulley or belt engaging surface 30.
The belt pulley 30 extends upwardly about i and surrounds the shaft hearing so that the belt drive is in horizontal alinenient with the bearing, and is thus at the center of'oscillation of. the shaft 5.
The brake drum is likewise very close to the center of oscillation, thereby obviating almost entirely shake and rocking in the creating an air current for cooling the brake drum and thereby carrying away and dissipating excessive heat which vwould damage the belt, and further in accordance with 'certain features of the invention the air current is employed to blow away all belt and brake dust, which might otherwise find its way around the spindle and down to the basket or its, contents. As embodied, said cooling and blowing means comprises a plurality of relatively thin, radially disposed blades withingthe brake drum, including vanes 36 extending within and along the cylindrical interior of the brake drum 29 as will be seen froraFigs; 2 and 3., Other vanes 37 are preferably provided between the vanes 36, extending along the cylindrical inner sur= face of the brake drum 29. The casing 22 preferably practically completely encloses the bearings and the pulley, but has openings 38 for the passage of the belt there into and there out of. vThe casing 22 is also provided with an air inlet orifice 39 at its lower part about the'shaft 5 or hub 26. The top of the casing 22, as previously indicated, is integral or continuous with the housing 20 which surrounds thebearing for the basket shaft 5.
When the machine is running, the air currents are created bythe vanes 36 and 37, and the air is drawn in through the orifice 39 passing within-the brake drum and carries away the heat radiated therefrom and from the vanes 36 and 37. The air current passes from within the brake drum upwardly about the brake band and the belt drive and circularly within the casing, as indicated by the any such details, but changes may be made its chief therein without departing from the principles of the invention, and without i tges.

A centrifugal machine including in combination a basket, a shaft supporting and rotating the basket, an oscillatory hearing from which the shaft is suspended, a pulley fixed to the shaft belowvthe bearingand extending upwardly about the bearing, the exterior of the pulley having a belt drive directly about the oscillatory bearing and having a brake drum below the belt drive and provided on its interior with heat radiating and air blowing vanes, and a casing sursacrificing rounding the pulley and brake drum and having an air admitting opening at its bottom about the shaft and having a belt opening through which the'air current from thevanes on the pulley passes out.
