TOY GUN.
Application filed February 23, 1922.
To all 107mm it 77mg concern:
Be it known that I. Josnrrr Annus, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia in the county of Philadelphia and State oi. Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in a Toy Gun, of which the Following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in a toy gun, and has for its object to provide an adjustable member which is utilized both as a handle when shooting and as a guard to retain the missile within the gun barrel during the time the gun is being carried as when in a persons pocket.
Another object of the invention is to provide a toy of the class described consisting of a barrel having a bore from end. to end, a missile tor insertion in the bore of the barrel said missile having a soft compressible head an elastic propelling means and a handle pivoted to the barrel and shaped to approximately correspond with the shape of the head of the missile whereby it may be placed thereover for holding the missile in the barrel.
With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of construction and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claims.
In order that those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains, may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by numerals to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, in which Fig. 1, is a plan view of a toy gun embodying my improvements showing the combined handle and guard in the position tor holding the missile in the gun.
Fig. 2, is a side elevation thereof showing the combined handle and guard in position for use as a handle when tiring the gun, a portion of the gun barrel being broken away and sectioned.
Fig. 3, is a fragmentary side elevation of the missile showing the compressible head in section.
in carrying out my invention as here embodied, 2 represents the barrel of the gun which is preferably tubular in shape and has a central bore 3 running entirely through the Serial No. 538,558.
same into which is placed a suitable missile 4: to be fired, said missile comprising a stem 5 having areduced portion at one end to form the extension 6 over which is placed the neck of the hollow compressible head 7, the latter preferably being formed of rubher and secured. to the stem by means 01'? a suitable adhesive. The stem of the missile 5 passes entirely through the barrel 2 so that the end may be engaged by an elastic firing device 8 in the form of a rubber band or equivalent, the ends of which are secured to the sides of the barrel at diametrically opposite points, as plainly shown in Fig. l, by means of suitable fastening devices 9 such as screw eyes as here shown or their equivalent.
The fastening devices 9 are also used to pivotally attach the combined. handle and guard. 10 which is approximately U shaped with the curved portion shaped to approximately correspond to the shape of the head 7.
In practice when the combined handle and guard is being used as a guard for the missile it is swung up into endwise alignment with the barrel, as shown in Fig. 1, so as to surround the outer end of the head 7 which will prevent the missile from becoming accidentally displaced but when being used as a handle at the time of shooting the gun it is swung downward at approximately right angles to the barrel, as shown in. Fig. 2, so to be readily gripped in one hand while the other hand is free to catch hold of the end of the missile engaged by the elastic band. By pulling upon the tail end of the missile and the elastic band the latter will be brought under tension so that when released it will propel the missile forward and forceit out of the barel.
Of course ll do not wish to be limited to the exact details oi? construction as herein shown. as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of my invention.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful is 1. A toy gun comprising a barrel adapted to receive a missile. and means pivoted to said barrel adapted to be used as a handle or swung around into engagement with the missile to act as a guard therefore.
2. A toy gun consisting of a barrel, an elastic band for propelling a missile from.
the barrel, and a virtually U shaped combined handle and guard pivoted to said barrel as specified.
3. A missile for a gun of the character 5 stated consisting of a stem having a reduced portion at one end to form an extension and a hollow compressible head mounted on said extension and contacting with the shoulder produced by the difference in diameter of the stem and its extension said head being; 10 aflixed to the stem by an adhesive.
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto ai fixed my signature.
JOSEPH G. AKERS.
