Application filed November 21, 1&21. Serial No. 516,834.
To all whom it may concern 1 I I e Be it known that we, lnrnn D. Eamon and tieuonn V door of the United States or $411M. iftrand llapids and ll yon'iing 'lownship. ,respeo ti'vely. in the county oi Kent and State of ad certain new and useful ill'llPlUVBlHQilm Fillers; and ly declare the nalowing to be a lull, cle and exact description of the invention. such as will ci'iable others skilled in the rt to which it appertaius to make and nice the same.
This invention relates to an agpliance for Us in filling cartons with ice cream from a large receptacle in which the ice cream is ordinarily kept. Itis a primary object and purpose of the present invention to provide an appliance into which the carton to be filled may be detachahly placed, the whole being inserted into the ice cream, whereupon the carton fills tl'l61.8Wltll, after which by giving the appliance a rotary IIIOJOlllBlX-t about a vertical axis, the cream within the carton is severed from the remaining hull: of cream and will. stay in the carton when further object of the invention is to provide an appliance of this charact rin which the cartons used may be easily placed before filling and readily removed after filling. Various other objects and purposes than those enumerated will appear as understand ing of the invention is had :troin the fol lowing description, taken in connection with the acconipanyingdrawing, in which Fig. l is a partial sectional and side elerational View oi the appliance with acarton therein.
Fig. 2 is an elevation showing the parts of the appliance separated and a cartonpartly inserted in the lower part.
Fig. 3 is an under plan view oi the car-ton holder portion. showing the transverse sew ering wire, and
Fig. l is a fragmentary elevation Show ing the pin. connection between the twoparts of the device at one side.
Like reference characters refer to like parts in the different figures of the drawing.
In the construction, a cylindrical eceptacle or container 1 is used, formed at its lower end with an. inwardly projecting horizontal annular shoulder 2 against which the edge of the open end of the carton is to year.
A cross wire 3 extendsacrossthe lower end ol the container 1, passing substantially across the center of the container. At one side and adjacent the upper end of the container a handle is secured permanently in any suitable niai ner at the nner side and lower portion 0%? which a ..ch receiving; opening" 5 is made. Bit-the do of the container opposite the poin t'oi attaclnnent of the handle, a pin receiving opening (5 is made therethrough.
Associatedwith the container is a coinbined cover and handle meinber, comprising a head '7 adaptedto fit within the upper end or the carton container, l'ronrwhich an integralbar or rod 8 extends upwardly. the
same terminating in a handle 9. At one side the head 7 is equipped with an outwardly projectingpin 10 to go through the opening 6. The head 7 is formed with an integrally cast upwardly projecting boss 11 on its upper side, bored to slidably receive a latch pin or bolt 12 which is normally pressed outwardly by the springlil. An operating finger 1 is attached to the bolt and passes through a slot 15 in the upper side or. the boss whereby-the latch bolt may be manually drawn back to inoperative po sition.
In the use of the appliance, a cylindrical carton 16 having an openend is placed in the container 1 with its open end down, the edges thereof resting on the annular shoulder or ledge 2, after which the head '7 with attached handle 9 is placed inthe upper end of the container and secured by passing pin 10 into opening 6 in the container and then forcing the opposite side ot the head clownwardly so that the inclined under side of the latch bolt 12 rides on to the curved side of the handle a and into the opening 5. As thus secured together, the container with the carton is pushed down into the ice cream, which fills the container when it is forced far enough into the cream. The whole appliance is then turned about a vertical axis, whereby wire 3 cuts the ice cream contained in the carton. from the restof the cream. The appliance may then be lifted out with carton filled with ice cream. The head '7 and attached handle are then removed by pulling the latch bolt 12 back so as to be free from the opening at 5, afterwhich the container is reversed in position and the same struck sharply to jarhthe carton loose. This is best done by striking the projection l on handle 4: against any solid structure, the counter or the like, the carton filled with ice cream readily dropping out of the container, as is evident.
This construction of ice cream carton filler and we consider ourselves entitled to all forms of construction coming with the scope thereof.
We claim:
1. An appliance of the class described, com
prising a container open at both ends and adapted to have a carton held therein, a head for filling the upper end of the container, means for detachably securing the head in place in said end of the container, and handle members secured to both the head andsaid container and projecting upwardly therefrom, substantially as described.
2. An appliance ofthe class described, comprising a container open at both ends, and formed adjacent one end with an annular horizontal ledge, a wire extending across saidendof the container, a head detachably connected to the container and filling the opposite end thereof, and handle members secured to both thecontainer and head and projecting upwardly therefrom, substantially as described.
An appliance of the class described, comprising a container for cartons, said container at one end having a cross wire extending across between the sides thereof, and means detachably secured at the oppoend bear, a wlre positioned across the same end of the container, a head closing the opposite end of the container, and means for detachably securing the head in place against the closed end of the carton.
5. An appliance of the class described,-
comprising a container for cartons open at both ends, means on the inside of and adjacent one end of the container against which the edges of the carton at its open end is adapted to'bear, a wire positioned across the same end of the container, a handle extending upwardly from the container at one side thereof, said handle having a latch bolt receiving opening therein at its inner side, and said container having an opening therethrough at a point substantially directly opposite, a head for fitting into the other end of the container against the carton therein, a pin on the head to enter said opening in the container, and a spring actuated latch bolt adapted to enter the opening in the handle, said bolt being mounted on the head.
6. A construction containing the elements defined i combination in claim 5, combined with manually operable means for withdrawing the latch bolt.
7. In combination with a container for cartons having a cross wire across one end thereof, of means detachably secured in and closing the other end thereof, said means being provided with a handle for turning the container about its longitudinal axis.
In testimony whereof we afiix our signatures.
