This invention relates to automobile side curtains which are provided with sections so arranged as'to swing with the doors of the car, the invention relating more particularly to such doorsections, and its object being to provide a structure by which the door sections will be held firmly closed and prevented from swaying open when the car is in motion.

With the object stated in View, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, and in order that the same may be better understood, reference is had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.

Referring specifically to the drawings, 10 denotes a fragment of the body of an automobile provided with a top 11 of any suitable design. Fig. 1 shows one side of the body, the front door being denoted by the reference character 12. and the rear door by the reference character 18. A side curtain is shown on this side-of the car, the same being provided with sections which are arranged to swing with the doors. It will be understood, of course, that the other side of the car is to be similarly equipped.

The curtain section for the door 12 is denoted by the reference character 14, the same being provided with a transparency 1 1 as usual. The curtain section has the usual enclosed top and bottom edge reinforcements 1 1*, and it conforms in width to the width of' the door, whereas its height is such that it completely encloses the space between the bottom edge of the top 11 and the top edge of the door 12. The curtain section 14 is therefore tozall intents and purposes a continuation of the door 12. The bottom edge of the top 1.1 has a rabbet 11 in which the top edge ofthe curtain section seats when the door 12 isclosed, and which forms a stop for the curtain section, and'a weatherproof joint.

The means for attaching the curtain section A tothe door consist of two rods 15 which are located adjacent to the vertical edges of the curtain section," andare secured to the reinforced top edge thereof. The lower end of each rod is oli'set, as shown at 15 and seats in a socket piece 16 embedded flush in the top edge of the door 12.

Each rod 15 is made in two sections, the lower section having the offset 15 being provided with a top socket 15 in which the lower end of the top section seats.

The curtain section 14 is also provided with two vertical brace rods 17 which are secured at the top to the upper ends of the rods 15 and fastened with the latter to the reinforced top edge of the curtain section. Each rod 17 is in two sections which are adjustably connected by a turnbuckle 17.

The lower end of each rod 17 is detachably fastened to the door 12 by being passed through a vertical aperture 18 in a plate 19, in which aperture it is held by a set screw 20 threaded into the plate. The plate 19 is secured to the inner face of the door 12 by screws or other suitable fasteners, and in order to obtain a better hold its side which is contiguous to the door has a spur 19 which is driven into the door.

The socket piece 16 has internal vertical ribs 16 which fit in external grooves 15 in the offset lower end 15 of the rod 15 when the latter is inserted into the socket, this structure being provided for locking the rod. against a rotary or twisting movement.

A door curtain section secured as hereinbefore described is strong and durable, and the attaching means enable the curtain sec tion to be readily put up. The curtain section is held firmly closed against the top, and it does not sway open but is at all times held in weatherproof position. The attaching means cannot rattle, and they eliminate all curtain fasteners on the body of the car. The curtain section can be readily removed, and its firm position prevents the transparency lei from cracking, The turnbuckles 17 enable the brace rods 17 to be tightened to take up all looseness and to keep the top of the curtain section tightly seated in thc rabbet 11?. c

The. attaching means of the curtain section 21 for the rear door 13 are the same as between the top of the curtain and the top of Y the door, and secured at their upper ends to the curtain and detachably connected at their lower ends to the door, said brace rods being also in sections which are adjustably connected for maintaining the coupledrelation of the first-mentioned rod sections.

2. The combination with an automobile door, of a curtain extending upwardly "from the top thereof, rods secured at their upper ends to the top of the curtain and detachably connected at their lower ends to the door, said rods being in sections which are detachably coupled, one of the sections having an end socket in which the other section seats, and brace rods extending between the top of the curtain and the top of the door, and secured at their upper ends to the curtain and detachably connected at their lower ends to the door, said brace rods being also in sections which are adjustably connected for maintaining the coupled relation of the firstmentioned rod sections.
