UNHTED STATS JOY B. HOLMES, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
CORK STOPPER FOR'THERMOS BOTTLES AND THE LIKE.
Application filed. April 7, 1920. Serial No. 371,989.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JoY B. HOLMES, a citizen of the United States, resid ng at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in Cork Stoppers for Thermos Bottles and the like, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a stopper particularly adapted for use with a so-called vacuum bottle, and has for its object to provide a stopper in which the pull exerted thereon in removing the stopper will be distributed through the stopper and thus prevent the liability of breaking off the top of the stopper. 2
The invention will be readily understood from the following description of the accompanying drawings in which;
Figure l is a side elevation of a vacuum bottle partly broken away and having the improved stopper inserted therein.
Figure 2 is a top plan view of the stopper.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section through the same on the line 83 of Fig. 2.
The stopper is shown at 1 as of usual size and shape adapted to close the mouth 2 of the bottle 3. The stopper may be made of cork, glass or other suitable material.
In the usual stopper construction in which the stopper is removed by pulling upon the outer end portion thereof there is a possibility of breaking off the outer end of the stopper if the latter sticks in the mouth of the bottle. My improved stopper includes means for exerting pulling force through the body of the stopper when it is desired to remove the latter, thereby preventing the possibility of breaking oif the head of the stopper.
For this purpose a rod 4 extends axially through a suitable aperture 5 provided in the stopper, this rod having an end cap 6 positioned against the inner end 7 of the stopper. The rod 4: at its opposite end projects beyond the outer end 8 of the stopper and is provided with a suitable end cap 9 removably connected to the rod as by threaded engagement 10. The end cap 9 may be formed with a suitable knob 11 to be grasped when the stopper is to be removed, and this knob, preferably, has a flexible loop 12, shown as a chain, received through a suitable aperture 13 in the knob, by grasping which the stopper is also adapted to be removed. The rod 4 and the end caps carried thereby are, preferably, held against rotation relative to the stopper by longitudinal flanges 14 on the rod 4:, preferably at the junction of the rod and the end cap 6, these flanges being received in suitable slots 15 projecting laterally from the aperture 5 at the inner end of the stopper.
By the construction as thus described it will be seen that by grasping the end cap 9 and exerting pull thereon to remove the stopper, the pulling force will be exerted from the end cap 6 against the inner end of the stopper and through the entire length I thereof.
Various changes may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
l. The combination with a stopper body having an axially disposed bore and a series of radially disposed slots formed in its lower face, of a rod extending through said bore, a plate on the lower end of said rod, radially disposed flanges on the inner face of said plate, which flanges occupy the slots in the under side of the stopper body, and a cap screw seated on the upper end of said rod.
2. The combination with a stopper body having an axially disposed bore and a series of radially disposed slots formed in its lower face, of a rod extending through said bore, a plate on the lower end of said rod, radially disposed flanges on the inner face of said plate, which flanges occupy the slots in the under side of the stopper body, a cap screw seated on the upper end of said rod, said cap being provided with a perforated head and a chain passing through the perforation in said head.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification.
JOY B. HOLMES.
