UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. BARRY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO BARRY DRUM MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
TAMBOURINE.
Application filed August 23, 1921.
To all 10 7mm it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM A. BARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tambourines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a tambourine, and the object is to provide improved means for securing the head in position, and additional means, also of improved construe tion, for mounting the jingles.
The device comprises an annular element constituting a frame formed with openings at intervals and with a bead on one outer edge, a clamping ring for retaining the skin upon the head in engagement with the bead, and means for mounting the jingles with the aforesaid opening, the mounting devices serving also to connect an additional annular element with that first named.
The invention consists further in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of elements hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that modifications may be made within the scope of the claims, without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a plan view of the instrument.
Figure 2 is a fragmentary view, partly in elevation and partly in section, showing the manner of securing the head by means of an annular band, and showing the mounting of the jingles.
igure is a fragmentary view transversely through the frame and transversely. of the plate constituting the jingles.
Figure 4 is a fragmentary view in elevation showing the manner of connecting the ends of. the clamping rings.
In carrying out the invention I provide a frame of annular form and designated 10, this annular element having cut-away portions providing openings 11 in which the jingles are mounted. In view of the formation of the openings at spaced intervals, the supports or posts '12 are provided and each l')ei11g formed with a concaved upper end portion or outer eiul portion.
The head 14; is clamped on the frame [0 and engages the head 15, the clan'iping ring Serial No. 494,555.
16 serving to retain the edge portion of the head in contact with the bead, so that posit1ve engagement may be retained.
I Vithin each of the openings I mount a pair of plates, or jingling elements, these plates being designated 18 and 19, that is the two plates of any given pair are so designated. The plates are apertured centrally and threaded pins or screws 21 pass through the apertures in the manner shown in Figure 3, and enter the solid portion of the frame 10.
An annular element 24 of suitable cross sectlon is provided with apertures at spaced intervals, and the screws pass through these apertures and then through the plates and into the frame 10. The heads of the screws are countersunk as shown and the element 24 rests within the concaved portions of posts or supports 12.
The clamping ring is provided with offset elements 26 and 27 on the ends thereof, these elements being apertured, and a screw 29 passes through the apertures and is engaged and retained by a nut 30, so that the required tension may be placed upon the band, for securing the head in position.
By securing the ring or annular element 24 in the manner specified, I arrange for mounting the plates or jingles without the use of additional or separate mounting means and therefore not only reduce to a certain extent the cost of the manufacture, but there are fewer elements likely to work loose during the use of the device.
What is claimed is:
1. An instrument of the class described comprising an annular element having cutaway portions opening toward one edge thereof providing intermediate solid sup ports formed with the body of the annular element, a second annular element of the same diameter as that first named and con tacting with the ends of the supports, devices passing through the second named annular element and into that first named, and loosely mounted plates retained in position in the openings by said devices, and a head. on the first named annular element.
2. An. instrument of the class described comprising an annular element and project-- ing devices thereon arranged to provide spun-ed openings and intermediate solid portions having concave ends, a second annular element of the same diameter as that first named and approximately circular in cross section, the second annular element contact- 5 ing With the concave ends, a head mounted on the annular element first named, screws passing through the second named annular
