Be it known that l, ABRAHAM Novroii, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, borough of Manhattan, in the county ofA New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Safety Devices for Envelope Machines, of which the following is a specification. y
This invention relates to safety devices for envelo Je machines and pertains particularly to tiat class of envelope machines which includes a folding-bed or trap which retreats downwardly to discharge the folded envelope; such for instance as shown in my ll. S. Patent No. 1,298,775 of April 1, 1919.
The object of my improvements is to provide a device of the class speciiied in which the hand of the operator will be automatically protected against injury when in the path of certain of the moving parts of the machine while removing the product.
`With this object in view my improvements comprise features illustrated in their preferred embodiment of the drawings accompanying this specification, wherein Figure 1 is an elevation, partly in section, of so much of an envelope machine as will suffice to illustrate my improvements. Fig. 2 is a top plan view corresponding with 1. Figs. 3 and 4: are elevations similar to that of Fig. 1 but showing the several parts in different relative positions. Fig. 5 is a partial. top plan view corresponding with Fig. 4t. All the figures of the draw ing are to one scale.
Referring particularly to Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, movable folding-bed or trap 3 .is rotatably mounted on rod et fixed in stationary bed 2 of the machine, and is operated to and fro between a position for folding t-he envelope and a position for discharging the envelope, through the acticni of a pair of duplicate mechanisms, 50, 51, one at each end thereof, by a pair of cams, as 5, fixed to shaft 6, rotatably mounted below said trap.l As said duplicate mecha uisms are the same throughout, a description of the details of one, 50, will suffice for both. Arm T, pivo'ted at one end at 8, is provided. at the other end with T portion 9, the lower extension of which carries roll in engagement with the periphery of said cam 5 and the upper extension of which is pivoted at 11 to thelower end, of
Said yieldable connection comprises plunger 1/1- having a bearing at one end for engagement with said pivot 13 and the other end slidably mounted in socket 15 and supported therein by compression spring 16, the reduced .lower portion 17 of said socket being threaded and extending through boss 18 of adjustment member 19 for adJustable Fixed relation therewith by means of clamp nuts 20, 21, threaded on said portion 17 and tightened against opposite faces respecn tively of said boss. Said adjustment member 19 is provided at its lower end with a bearing for engagement with said pivot 11. Trap 3 has opposite lugs 22, 23, in which are fixed the pivots, respectively, of said @yieldable connectionstas pivot 13 of lug 22 Jand vleldalole connection 12', and each provided with an outwardly extending and downreaching stop member, as 24 to lug 22, for engagement with the top of the respective socket, as 15 of yieldable connection 12.
Fired to the lower face of bed 2 and de pending therefrom are studs 25, 26 having interposable arms 27, 28 pivotally mounted thereon', respectively, with their free endsv 29, 30 adapted for interposition at predetermined times between the heads of the pivots of the upper ends of said yieldable connections and the lower faces of stationary abut ments 31, 32, respectively, of bed 2, as end 29 between pivot 13 and abutment 31, Fig. 5.
Fixed on the outboard ends of studs 25, 26, respectively, are supports 33, 3a in which is rotatably mounted shaft having gate 36 fixed thereto for normally closing the path of the hand of the operator to the working face of trap Stop arms 37, 38 also fixed to said. shaft 35 are provided for coaction with stop screws 39, (t0 of arms jf, 23, respectively, for holding said arms in their inoperative positions against the tension of springs L11, 4:2, each of said springs having one end fast to its respective arm. and the other end fast to one of pins 13, elet, respectively Xed in the lower face of bed 2. Stop arms 37, 38 are provided with rearwardly eXtendin counterweights 45, 4:6, respectively, for holding said gate 36 in its normal position, said stop arms being held in operative positions against the action of said coiuiterweights by projections al", 4S of said arms coactingl with. stop screws 259, L10 of interposable arms 27, 26 respectively.
The operation of my improved. device is as follows: The several. parts being in the positions of Figs. 1 and 2, 'wherein trap 3 is rigidly supported. in its position for folding the envelope by the coaction of stops, as 24, against the uppei` ends-of the sockets, as 15, cams as 5 continue their rotation until rolls as 10 drop from the high to the low spots thereof, whereby trap 3 is lowered to its discharge position, when the hand of the operator may be thrust beneath bed 2,
over shaft 35 and forwardly over the working face of trap 3 until the fingers engage the folded envelope for removal, as shown in dotted outline in Fig. 3. This action of the hand lowers gate 36 from the position of F ig. 1 to that of -Fig. 3, thereby rocking stop arms 37, 38 out of coaction with stop screws 39, 40, whereby interposable arms 27, 28 are free to be drawn inwardly by the action of springs 41, 4t2 to the positions of Figs. 3 and 5. If now the hand of the operatorfails to be withdrawn before cams as 5 again rotate to their high spots, as in F ig. 4L, stops, as 24, being out of engagement with the ends of the sockets, as 15, and arm ends 29, 30 being interposed, between the heads of the pivots of the yieldable connections and abutments 31, 32, respectively, as end 29 between pivot 13 and abutment 31, said trap `3 will thereby be held in its discharge position against the thrust of cams, as 5, sockets, as 15, and plungers, as 1.4i-, being free to yield toward each other against the resistance of compression springs, as 16 of yieldable connection 12, thus protecting the hand of the operator against injury by crushing. The hand of the operator being withdrawn and gate 36, interposable arms 27, 28 and stop arms 37, 38 being returned to their normal positions, trap 3 will be free to return to its folding position upon the next rotation of cams, as 5, to their high spots.
I claim:
' 1. In a safety device the combination of a bed movable from operative to inoperative position, means for n'ioving said bed, a yieldable connection between said bed and its movingmeans, and means fixed to said bed for normally rendering said yieldable connection non-yieldable.
2. In a safety device for envelope machines employing trap movable to and. fro between a. position. for folding the envelope and a position for discharging the envelope, means for thus moving said trap, a yieldable connection between said trap and said trap moving means, means automatically operative when released for causing said .connection to yield and for preventing said 'trap moving `'from its discharge position to its folding position, means actuated by the insertion of the hand onto the working face of said trap when in its discharge position for releasing said trap movement preventing means, and means carried by said trap for automatically rendering said connection non-yieldable when said trap is in its :folding position.
In a safety device the combination of a bed movable from operative to inoper tive position, means for moving'said bed, a yieldable connection between said bed and its moving means, a stationary abutment, and a `movable arm operable for interposition between said abutment and said yieldable connection for preventing said yieldable connection from actuating said bed. y
4t. In a safety device the combination of a bed movable from operative to inoperative position, means for `moving said bed, a yieldable connection between said bed and its moving means, an abutment, a movable arm operable when released for interposition between said abutment and said yieldable connection for preventing said yieldable connection from actuating said bed, and means carried by said bed for rendering said yieldable connection non-yieldable when said. movable arm is not released.
5. In a safety device lfor envelope machines employing a trap movable to and fro between an operative position where the envelope is folded thereon and a discharge position for the folded envelope, means for thus moving said trap including a yieldable connection, an abutment, a pivoted arm automatically operative when released for interposition between said .abutment and said yieldable connection for preventing ysaid yieldable connection from actuating said trap, a gate normally closed and which when closed bars the entrance of the hand to the face of said trap when said trap is in its discharge position, and means actuated by said gate when moved lfrom its closed position for releasing said interposable means.
6. In a safety device for envelope inachines employing a hinged trap, means for swinging said trap on its hinge from an operative position where the envelope is 4folded thereon. downwardly to a discharge position and back again comprising a yieldable connection, an abutment, a pivoted arm l,
automatically operative when. released for interposition between said abutment and said yieldable connection for preventing said yieldable connection from actuating said trap, and means carried by said traa for at predetermined times rendering sa-iii yieldable connection non-yieldable.
7.111 a safety device for envelope machines employing a vtrap movable from lan operative uposit-ion downwardly to a dsiso charge position and back again, a cam for thus moving said trap, a yieldable connection between said trap and cam7 an abutment, a pivoted arm automatically operative when released for interposition between said abutment and said yieldable connection for preventing said yieldable connection from actuating said trap7 and means xed to said trap and operable just prior to the end of the upward movement of said trap for transforming said yieldable connection into a rigid connection.
8. In a safety device the combination of' a movable bed, yieldable means for moving said bed, and means fixed to said bed for rendering said yieldable means non-yieldable.
9. In a safety device the combination of a movable bed, yieldable means for movingsaid bed, a stationary abutment, and means interposable between said abutment and said yieldable means for preventing the movement of said bed.
10. In a safety device the combination of a bed movable from operative to inoperative position, yieldable means for moving said bed, and means` xed to said bed and brought into operative position as said bed moves into operative position for rendering` said yieldable means non-yieldable.
