Description

G. BUALLOCK. ROLL PAPER CONTROLLER.
APPLIcA'TloN HLED ocr. 3.1921.
Patented Patented @et 31, 19222 narran sraras GEORGE BULLOCK, OF GRAND JUCTION, COLORADO. i
A ROLL-PAPER CQNTROLLER.
Application filed October 3, 1921. Serial No. 504,962.
70 all whom 'if 'may cof/wem Be it known that I, GEORGE BULLOCK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Grand Junction, Mesa County, Colorado,
Ahave invented a new and useful Roll-Paper Cont-roller, of which the following is a speci- (ication.
This invention troller. 1
It is now the usual. practice to support a roll of wrapping paperl in a frame provided with a bladeA that is pressed against the paper roll by an actuating device, such 'as a spring' or a weight. The paper is torn off along the edge of the blade so that when it is again desired to take paper from the roll relates to a roll paper con- `it isnecessary to turn the roll a distance by hand before the edge of the paper can 'be engaged. This present construction also admits of the paper being taken from only one side of the roll.
The blade aga-inst which the paper is torn serves well `enough to clamp the paper to permit it to be torn off when the roll is full or large; but as the paper is taken from the roll and the size of the roll diminishes the clamping effect of the blade against the roll is lessened, often with 'the result that' the paper will be torn unevenly since the pres sure of the blade is not suliicient to hold the paper firmly While the paper is being torn.
An object of the present invention isto provide an improved rollpaper controller' in which after each piece of paper is torn off, a sufficient portion of the paper is left for easy manual engagement `when it f is again desired to take paper from the roll.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved roll paper controller in which the paper can be taken toward either side with equal facility and in ywhich a sufficient portion of the paper is left projecting free from the clamping device for manual engagement.
Another object of the invention is to provide an improved roll paper controller in which the paper will be firmly clamped and held when a piece of paper is being torn oif for use, irrespective of the size of the roll or the amount of paper on the roll.4
Another object of the invention is to pro-` vide an improved roll paper 'controller overcoming all of the objections above mentionec.
(ther objects ofthe invention will appear from the following description, reference being made to the drawing, in which .if l is a side elevation of a rollpaper controller embodying my present invention.
2 is a vertical sectional view on the 60 line 2`2 of Fig. l'.
In the embodiment of the invention shown the two upright standards l are secured in proper position relative to each other and may have their upper ends connected by the cross or tie member 2, A roll 3 of paper is supported between the uprights l upon an support e. The ends of the axial support 1l extend into vertical slot-s 5 in the uprights l permitting downward movement of the paper roli asthe paper is taken off and the size or diameter of the roll diminishes. n A smaller roll 6 has axial extensions 7 on its oppositie ends extending into short slots S in the uprights l. The slots 8 are at one 75 side of the vertical plane of the axis of the support 4; so that the pressure of the paper roll 3 upon the roller 6 actuates said roller outwardly until the axial members 7 are at the outer ends of the slots 8. This is because the weight of the paper roll 3 imparts a lateral pressure upon the roll 6, due to the position of said -roller at one side of the rvertical plane of the axis ofthe paper roll.`
A pivoted clamp and tear device is supported at one side of the roller 6. As shown, said device comprises a plate 9 having ears l0 extending from the opposite ends thereof and pivoted upon supports l1 in connection with the uprights l. The inner edge of the plate 9 is provided with an up-turned fiange 12 located adjacent to and curving in substantial conformity with the curvature of the surface of the vroller G. The paper from the paper roll 8 is passed downwardly 95 between the roller 6 andthe flange l2. The endV of the paper hangs down a sutiicient distance for convenient manual engagement from either side of the paper roll so that the paper may be drawn in either direction. The outer edge of the plate 9 is formed with a downwardly turned flange 13. When thcl i supports 17 in 'from that side of the device. ledge ofl the plate 15 has an up-turned flange 19 curving approximately to the curvature ofthe surface of the roller 6 and arranged paper is drawn out a sufiicient distance for the piece of paper desired it is raised against and torn along the flange 13. As the paper is raised and torn the outer edge of the plate 9 is raised and the flange 12 is pressed or clamped against the paper between said flange and the roller 6. By this clamping action the paper is held from further movement so that the paper will be torn straight across along the edge of the flange 13.
After the piece of paper has beenvtorn off the free edge of the paper drops down so that it can be conveniently engaged from either side of the paper roll. The outer portion of theplate 9 is normally sustainedby supporting lugs or projections 14 in connection with the uprights 1. The lugs A14 do not interfere with the clamping action of the device.
A plate 15, having ears 16 pivoted upon connection with the uprights 1, is supported at the opposite side of the roller 6 from the plate 9. The width of the plate 15 added to the diameter of the roller 6 is the same, or approximately the same,
fas the width 'of-the plate 9 so that about the same length of paper will be left extending below the roller 6 for manual engage- Ament, irrespective of the side at which the paper is torn off. The outer edge of the plate 15 has a down-turned flange 18 along which the paper `will be torn when taken The inner to press against the roller 6 when the outer portion ofthe plate 15 is raised by4 tearing the paper along the flange 18. The pressure of the flange 19 against the roller 6 forces-the roller 6 over against the flange 12, causing the paper to be clamped between the roller and said flange. This holds the paper so that the paper will be torn straight across along a line 'definedby the edge of the flange 1S. Normally the outer portion of the plate 15 is supported by lugs or projections 2O in connection with the uprights 1.
The lower edges of the flanges 13 and 18 may be formed with teeth or not, as desired. If the flanges are formed with teeth for `puncturing the paper, the paper may be separated more easily and with less pressure than otherwise.
From the foregoing it is apparent that my invention obtains all of its intended objet/cs in a highly convenient, efiicient and simple manner. There is always sufficient paper left for easy manual engagement, irrespective of the side from which the paper is taken and the paper may be taken from either side of' the paper roll with equal facility.
The clampingdevice is effective to hold'l desired and as are within the scope of the appended claims.
