rnsrnnna.
Application filed March 8,1921. Serial No. 450,752.
To all Lo/1,0m it mwg/ concern Be it known that l, Moens li". Gann, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Newton, in the county of Middlesex, Commonwealth of ll/Iassachusetts, have invented an Improvement in Fasteners, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, a specification, like characters on the drawings representing like parts.
rlhis invention pertains to improvements in fasteners, and more particularly, though not exclusively, to fasteners of the threeside lock type. It is among the objects of the invention to provide an improvement in the securing of the sockets of three-side lock fasteners to their carrying fabrics.
ln the drawings, which show a preferred embodiment of one form of my invention Figure 1 is a front elevation of a socket, a portion of the carrying fabric being shown;
Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a diagrammatic section :illustrating the portions of the fastener prior to securing thereof to the carrying fabric and illustrating' a preferred form of die for et fecting the securing operation; and
Fig. 4 is a. section through the socket on the line 41 of Fig. 2.
Referring to the drawings and to the preferred form of my invention selected for illustrative purposes, l have shown a socket( which preferably, as illustrated, includes a casing 5 containing a spring 6 and provided with a front plate 7. The casing o is preferably provided with a stud-receiving opening 8, and provided with an underlying' lip 9. The stud-engaging portion of the spring 6 intersects a portion of this stud-receiving opening so that the spring may engage the neck of the stud beneath the head thereof to hold the stud and socket in engagement. The front plate 7 of the casing is prefer ably, as illustrated, provided with a forward extension 10 having an inwardly flanged lip 11 and providing an aperture to receive the tubular rivet 12 projecting from the securing means on the other side of the socket-carrying fabric 13.
ll`he securing means preferably includes a plate 111, from which the tubular rivet 1Q projects, and a covering plate 15. Theplate 1l, prior to assembly of the parts, is preferably dished in the direction of the proie@ -tion of the tubular rivet 12, as best shown 1n Fig. 3, and the marginal portions thereof underlie the flange 16 of the coverin.Dr plate 15, closely fitting the same. lllhen thce parts are to be assembled. they are placed .in the relationship shown in F 3 and the upsetting die 'i7 is introduced through the stud-receiving aperture of the socket, the head thereof being preferably rounded to move the studengaging spring out of the Way. A supporting die 18 backs up the covering plate 15 and, as the two dies are forced together, the plate 'la is sprung' so that it dishes in the opposite direction from that illustrated in Fig. o and assumes the position shown in Fig. 2 as the tubular rivet is upset by the die 17. The upsetting of the rivet holds the parts in assembled relation ship, and the reversal of the dishing of the plate carrying the tubular rivet results in great pressure being exerted to grip the cloth between the marginal portions of the socket and the marginal portions of `the socket-securing parts on the opposite side of the fabric 13. i
llVhen the die 17 is removed after the comn pletion of the socket-securing operation, the stud-engaging spring resumes its normal position and the socket is ready `for use. 1When the ystud entered in the socket. the head of the stud may engage the projecting portion l() of the socket casing. l have not described the operation of the stud and socket more fully, such description being unnecessary because. so far as the cooperation of the stud and socket is concerned` the construction is fully described in United States Patent No. 1,278,798, issued September 10. 1918, to Carr Fastener Company, assignee of Fred S. Carr. lt will be understood, however, that my invention may be of use in connection with other types of fastener.
`While I have shown and described a preferred form of one embodiment of my in! vention, it will be understood that maior changes involving` omission, substitution, lalteration and reversal of parte, and even changes in the mode rof operation. mav be made without departing from the/scope of my invention, whichis best defined in the following claim.
Claim.
A fastener including a casing located on that side of the socket-carryingfabric from which the stud enters, said casing comprisfabric and a. securing platesecured to said! covering plate and carrying a tubular rivet for passage throllgh the fabric and adapted to be riveted over Said internal flangcysad Securmg plate prlor to assembly Wlth sald Socket bemg d1shed to present a convex Surface adjacent the fab-ric and subsequent lo assembly being' sprung' to provide aV concave Surface adjacent said fabric.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
