FRANK T. STEVEN$, OF SALT BERNARDINO, CALIFORNIA.
ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Application filed April 17,1920. Serial No. 374,702.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRANK J. STEVENS, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Bernardino, in the county of San Bernardino and State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in an Advertising Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to advertising machines, and the primary object of the invention is to provide an improvedadvertising device embodying a plurality of stationary advertisements and a plurahty of movable advertisements, the movable advertisements being arranged in such a manner in relation to the stationary advertisements that attention will be attracted to all of the advertisements.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an improved display or advertising device having a plurality of stationary advertising cards, a plurality of display windows arranged between certain of the advertising cards, and a movable endless belt or ribbon having a plurality of advertisements associated therewith, arranged to move behind the display window, the belt or ribbon being arranged in such a manner that the advertisement on the belt moves in different directions behind every other display window.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved advertising device embodying an endless belt having associated therewith a plurality of advertisements, the belt being arranged to move in rear of a plurality of display windows, the belt being arranged in relation to the windows in such a manner that only one face of the belt is used for advertising matter.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved advertising devise which can be used for indoor and out door advertising purposes, the same including a body or cabinet having a hinged front wall or closure carrying a plurality of stationary display cards, and a plurality of display windows, the cabinet having means associated therewith for moving an endless belt carrying advertisements in rear of said display windows. 1
A" still further object of the invention is to provide an inexpensive advertising medium which will be durable and eflicient in use, one that is simple and easy to manufacture, and one which can be placed upon the market at a reasonable cost.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and formation of parts, as will be hereinafter more specifically described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thls specification, in which drawings:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the improved display device.
Figure 2 the same.
' Figure 3 is a front elevation of the frame and rolls for supporting the endless belt or ribbon, the same being shown removed from the cabinet.
Figure 4 is a longitudinal section through the frame and rolls taken on the line 4l-4 of Figure 3, the display ribbon or belt be ing shown trained around the rolls and in section, and
Figure 5 is an enlarged fragmentary detail section through the frame showing an elevation of one of the rolls.
Referring to the drawings in detail, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, the letter A indicates the improved display device, which inclrdes a cabinet or the like B having a frame C associated therewith for supporting a pluralitv of rotatable rollers D for guiding the endless belt or ribbon E. i
The cabinet B may be constructed of any preferred material and of any desired shape or configuration, and as shown in the drawings includes the rear wall 10, the side walls 11, and the hinged front wall The hinged front wall 12 may be locked in closed position, if so desired. so as to prevent unauthorized persons from gaining access to the interior of the cabinet. The hinged closure 12 is provided with a frame 13, which is subdivided in a plurality of spaces 14 for the reception of cards 15 bearing suitable advertisements by a plurality of transverse and longitudinal cleats or bars 16 and 17. The longitudinally extending bars 17 are arranged in parallel 'relationto'one another and to the longitudinal side bars of the frame 18 as shown.
The longitudinal bars define three rows of advertising spaces and the central row is provided with a plurality ofdisplay winis a transverse section through I dows 18, 19, 20 and 21, which are arranged intermediate the stationary display cards 15. A suitable glass is placed in front of the cards, so as to protect the same fromv desired manner, but the same is preferableformed of metal and moulded to provide the relatively long rear wall 22 and theside walls 23 and 24. The rear wall'22 and the side walls 23 and 24 are preferably formed of an open frame work arrangeinentso as to lighten the weight of the frame C and I save material in the making thereof. The
side walls 23 and 24 are cast in such a man ner as to provide a plurality of spacedpairs of bearing arms 25, 26, 27 and 28 and these spaced pairs of bearing arms rotatably support pairs of rollers 29, 30, 31, and 32; The pairs of rollers 29, 30, 31 and 32 are arranged directly in rear of the display windows 18, 19, 2O and21 and serve to guide the display belt or ribbon E in rear of the said display windows; 7
The guide rollers D for the endless belt or ribbon E include the spaced pairs of rollers 29, 30, 31 and 32, and upper and lower rollers 33 and 34, which form means for dividing the endless belt into a front run and a rear run. To make the advertising matter on the belt move in oppo'sitedirections behind the display windows'18, 19, 20 and 21, the belt or ribbon E is brought back and forth, so that in certain of the display windows the front run of the belt or ribbon E will be seen, while in other windows the rear run-of the belt or ribbon E will be seen. To deflect the course of the runs of the belt'or ribbon E a plurality of oppositely inclined rollers 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, '41, 42 and 43 are provided. These rollers are mountedinsuitable bearings 44 carried by the inner surface of the side walls 23 and24 ofthe-frame. The side wall v23 is provided with a pair of spaced outstanding bearings 45, which rotatably supportt-he guide rollers 46; These bearings 45 are located adjacent to the transverse axis of the frame upon one sidethereof, while the wall 24 has arranged adjacent to and at one side of the transverse axis a pair of spaced bearings 47 which rotatably support the guide rollers 48. The side walls 23 and 24 adjacent to their opposite endsare also provided with bearings 49and 50, which rotatably support rollers 51 and 52. The
outer rollers of thepairs of rollers 29 and 32 are provided with pulley wheels 53 around which is adapted to be trained a suitable drive belt for moving. the display belt or ribbon Therollersbfeach pair of rollers 29 and32 are preferably driven by an electric motor which may be geared down 'so that the belt or'ribbon E ,willmove atra relatively roller 52 are formed slightly different so as to be i best adapted for the work with which they are intended to be used, but all of the rollers are. substantially the same and include a body 55 and'a shaft 56 which'has'its terminals mounted in the bearings. Also certain of the rollers are provided with guard: flanges 57 to prevent the belt or ribbon E from slipping off of the same and with nuts 58 which tendto space the rollers from the bearings.
' The belt-or ribbon E may be formed of any preferred material, either of'tough paper or fabric, such as linen and the same is trained "around the rollers D in the following manner. in following the ribbon E down the frame, the same is trained over the pair of rollers29 and behind the window 18 and is then brought under the inclined roller 37 and twisted to the side of the frameand over the rollers 43 and to one sideof the dlsplay window 19 until the same reaches the inclined roller40 where the same is threaded into the frame and under the roller40 and over the rollers 31in rear of the display window 20 and then under the inclined roller 41 and over the side roller 52 and over the incline roller 43 and under the 34 and then up in front and around the spaced rollers 32' in rear of the display window 21. The beltthenezntends under the inclined roller 42 and is brought toone side of the machine over the pairs of rollers .46 to one side of the display window 20 and then underthe inclined guide roller 39 in front and over the pair of rollers 30 in rear of the display window 19 and then in rear of the guide roller 38"and over the roller 51 and over the guide roller 36 and under the roller 33 back to the upper pair of rollers 29; To pick up the'slaclr in the belt or'rihbon E belt tighteners 59 and 60 are arranged at theupper and lower end of the frame C and each 'of'the tighteners 59 and 60 includes a pair of spaced arms 61 which are pivotally' secured-to the side walls 23 and 24 of the frame 0 as at 62. The outer terminals of the pairsofarms -61 carry rollers 63 which-engagei the inner face of the belt. Suitable From the foregoing description, it can be seen that an improved display mechanism is provided in which a plurality of display windows are arranged intermediatethe stationary display cards, the display windows having arranged in rear thereof a movable endless belt for carrying suitable advertisemen s, the whole arrangement providing a novelty advertising device which will effectively attract the attention of a passer by.
While only four display windows have been shown, it is to be understood that any number of the same maybe provided as de sired by increasing or decreasing the length of the frame, and if so desired a plurality of frames may be provided and arranged side by side so that a row of stationary advertisements will be provided and then a row of movable advertisements.
Changes in details may be made without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention; but,
I claim:
