' CLOSET."
Applicationfiled August 8, 1918. Serial No. 248,991.
Be it l'riiowirtliat I, EARL G. VV..-YI.R()US, a citizen of the Dmted States. residlngat Chicago,in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certam new and use-.
t'ul Improvements in Closets of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in closets and more particularly to siphonic closets. One of its objects is to provide a construction especially adapted to permit the i1'1stallation of the closet bowl fiush against the wall and free from the floor where the available space lengthwise of the howl-unit is small; another object is to provide a special fitting constituting part of the soil. pipe connections upon which the bowl unit may be supported and which may itself receive support from the fioor structure; and a further object of my invention is to provide a cooperating bowl-unit and piping element for effective siphonic action. Other and further objects of my invention, which consist in the features of construction of corelation of parts hereinafter described and claimed, will become apparent to those skilled in. the art from the following description and accompanying drawing, and it will be understood that while Various features and points of my invention may desirably be combined in a single complete structure, some of the features thereof may be em ployed in closets widely different in many matters from that herein illustrated, with re tention of the advantages of the particular feature employed.
I have illustrated a closet for the embodiment of my invention in a single view, showing the construction in side elevation with parts broken away.
In some instances, particularly in apartment house and hotel equipment, it is very desirable to use a bowl-unit that is set flush against the wall and free from the floor, and where the available space is small, it is de sirable to condense the bowl-unit in its length from front to rear. Also it is advantageous to locate the point of support of the structure close to the bowl-unit and to carry the weight from the floor, which may be of concrete construction. In the particular construction shown I provide a closet unit 10 having a bowl proper 11 and a seal passage 12 extending upwardly and rearwardly of the seal wall 13, and terminating at a vertical orifice 14, approximately in the plane of a thick base flange 15 which is intended to be mounted flush against the wall lV, leaving the bottom of the bowl-unit free from the floor F. This bowl-unit receives its support from the piping fitting 16 that has a pipe element 17 constructed to supplement the passagesin the bowl-unit for the provision of means to engender siphonic action when the closet is flushed. In the particular construction shown the pipe unit 17 has a vertical front orifice 18 surrounded by a flange 19 to receive a packing ring 20 that seals the joint between the bowl-unit and pipe fitting. From the orifice 18 the pipe descends preferably approximately vertically, and at its bottom is bent as at 21 rearwardly to present its rear orifice 22 vertically. A flange 23 is provided around the rear orifice 22 to facilitate connection with a soil pipe stub, not shown, in suitable fashion. The bottom bend portion 21 is preferably dipped in the middle of its length to form a trap or well 24:, in which water may normally stand to the level of the dotted line Z, the top of the bend, at 25,being sufiiciently close to the water line so that a comparatively small flow of water will fill the free air space above the water line Z for the prompt commencement of siphonic action.
Thus the pipe fitting is supplemental to the closet passages in the provision of the siphomc means, both in providing the clownleg and the lower well.
The bowl-unit receives its support from this fitting. The plaster or other surface material of the wall WV has an opening 10 made therein into which there extend studs 28, 29 of suitable number and position to receive bolts 30 and 31, taking through the base flange 15 of the bowl-unit and positioned to give secure anchorage to the latter to hold it in fixed relation to the pipe element. These studs are preferably made in tegral with the pipe. The pipe fitting itself is preferably supported by a pedestal or foot that has a vertical leg 34 and a horizontal foot proper 35 of a suitable shape to enable the foot proper, when embedded in the concrete body of the floor F, in its position extending forward under the bowl, very rigidly to hold the pipe fitting in its intended position. For desired rigidity I prefer that the supporting standard be made in one piece with the pipe element.
It will he understood that a suitable source of water supply for flushing will be propromptly cause a seal to be effected at the bottom of the down-take pipe so that between the two seals, that last mentioned and the seal in the bowl, rarefactionzof the. air will occur and siphonic action will be promptly started. ltwillbeobserVedthat the i use of a a pipe -fittingas -described enables the bowl to be built of minimum length or projection from-{the Wall, and that the combination of thepipe element and-'itsgsupporting standard; affords astrong and efiective support tocarry the bo-wl iinit.
JVhat I have herein;- described inj detailfis one specific embodiment of my invention, -;h11t. it-;will be understoodthat anally changes may bemade therein without' departure .from the spirit of my invention as set forth in -the appended claim.
What I claim is: A support and pipe fitting for closets of the character described comprising a foot, a pipe -member-rigidwithand carried by said foot comprising a horizontal lower reach and bendincluding a W611 having a free restrictedspace; aboye its Water-holding level, an uptight portion ertically aligning With ithe supporting portion ofthe foot, and: a horizontally"loent upper portion terminating, at a vertical'oriflcaand means adjacentgsaid ,orifice t0 receivebowl fastening devices.
