LIQUID nnersrnn.
Application filed. April 11,
Be it known that I, Rrcrmnn Lossme, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residin at South Pasadena, in the county of Los ngeles and State of'iCaliiornia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Liquid Registers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a liquid register for the fuel consumption of an internal combustion :engine and consists inthe provisionof aregister which may; be of the type shown in my co-pendi-ng application-Serial' No. 426,828, filed November 27, 1920, and an actuating means for-said'register includ- *ingan operating diaphragm which is nor mally expanded and which is ada ted to be contractedw by: succeeding pu sations" through a usualvacuum feed systempsuch as is employed for the fuel supply= to an =The= invention iWlll be' readilyunderstodd fron'rthe following' description oftlie ac companying drawings, in'wvh'ichw "a" -'Figure 1 :is ai 'sidefielevation artlyin vertical sections :ofir'a; meter connected-ate &
usual vacuum feed tank by the improvedl operatingconnection. {:"W' 1 Fig. 2 is a transverse'sectionbIY-the line 22 of Fi 1.
In the' rawingsl have shown a usual vacuum feed tank at 1 which is provided with a usual connection 2 leading to a fuel supply, and with a connection 3 leading to the manifold of the engine in usual manner, so that the suction through the intake manifold will create a vacuum in the feed tank, said vacuum being employed to create pulsating suctions in the feed tank for drawlng supplies of fuel to said feed tank in proportion to said ulsating suctions. From the feed tank, the uel is supplied to a usual carburetor.
The device, as thus described, is of standard construction, and the operation thereof will be readily understood by those skilled in the art, it being understood that variations in the amount of fuel supplied to the vacuum tank, and from thence to the (farbure'tor, will cause corresponding variations in the suction pulsations in said tank.
The vacuum feed tank is provided with a usual nipple 5 normally closed by a plug, and the improved operating connection for the fuel registering apparatus is connected to the vacuum feed tank by removing the plug from nipple '5 and connecting 1921. Serial 1%. 460,427.
a conuit 6 to the opening formed by sai nipple, as by a usual mil; 7.
As previously stated, the register which is emplo ed may be similar to that shown and desori ed in my above mentioned co-pendmg application, said register including a casing S-having the registering mechanism 9 actuated by the longitudinally movable transverse plate 10. The pulsations through the vacuum feed tank will cause correspondingsuctions in conduit 6 opening to said feed tank, and this conduit is connected to an operating mechanism arranged within the end of'casing 8 to cause corresponding movements- 0f" said operating mechanism. The"operating-mechanism is in turn connected to transverse plate 10 so that the re terf is actuated in accordance with the p 'sations'th'rough the vacuum feed tank, and'as a consequence the register will re istef'thefuel consumption, it being un erstood thatfi-the register graduated for propier rea'dings' in accordance with the ammlnt offuel"drawn'in to the vacuum feed tank? and which in turn proportional to the suction pulsations insaid feed tank.
i he -operating"mechanism for the transverse late" 10" includes" an annular receptaclef 1 having a flexible diaphragm 13 over its opeh end which is turned toward transverse plate 10. The flexible diaphragm is held in position by a retaining ring 1 1 threaded onto receptacle 12. The device, as thus described, is mounted within the open end of casing 8 with a ring 15 threaded onto receptacle 12 abutting against the end of casing 8, and a retaininglcover plate 16 received over the device and t readed onto the end of easing 8.
The diaphragm 13 is normally held in ex panded position by means of coil spring 17 within receptacle 12, and impinging at its respective ends against the diaphragm and against the base of the receptacle. The base of receptacle 12 and cover plate 16 are provided with axial openings receivin a nipple 18 opening into receptacle 12, ant? the protruding end of this nipple is connected to conduit 6 as by a usual nut 19. By this arrangement it will be seen that the suction pulsations through conduit 6 will cause corresponding suctions in receptacle 12 so as to contract diaphragm 13 against the tendency of spring 17, and that as soon as the sue tion ceases, the diaphragm will be returned to its expanded. position under the, influence of its spring. AS a "consequilcei the F615 phragm of the operating mechanism will be moved back and forth in accordanqewith the pulsations through 'th vacuum feedtiarikf which are proportionalto the fuel supplly to 1 the feed tank and the consequent disc are" of said fuel to the carburetor, previous 5;. described.
Th is arrangement will cause; variations in the fuel consumption; and theconsequqnt m i-iatio'ns in the frequency ofi-thetsuction 'Pulfl" sations through the; vacuum ;fcBd .-tanl;to cause corresponding -variation'sin.-thei Myer. ment of diaphragm 13, and the latten beingl connected to the transverse: late;10;gthi 1egws istcr mechanism will VQI'IabIYflOt j' QdEm'; accordance \vi til .the ariationsl :in; ;the r'rfuel= 2 consumption so as to accurately {register the fuel being used t n ii =;E:
