Application filed February '28, 1320, Serial No. 352,001.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, .ASHMEAD B. Crrusrnn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Jacksonville, in the county of Morgan and State of lllinois,-have invented new and useful improvements in Drills, of vhich the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a drill and has for its primary object the construction of a device of this character of simple. inexpensive construction, which may be readily connected or disconnected from an opekative position.
An object of the invention is to provide a more substantial drill apparatus at less expense.
A feature of my invention isthe novel manner of arranging the parts so that the feed screw as well as the drilling mechanism may be operated without the operator changing his position.
With these and other objects in View the invention will he better understood from the following detailed description taken in conwith the accompanying "drawing wherein- Fig. is a side elevation of the apparatus. l ig. 2 is a detailed view illustratingthe rib. i
Fig. 3 is a sectional view of the bracket. Fig. 4 is a plan view of the foot.
igain referring; to the drawing illustrat ingone of the many forms in which my invention may be constructed the numeral 1 designates a frame havi 11g at one enda. head 2 supporting the drilling); mechanism. The other end of the frame is provided with a tapering dovetail shaped rib 3 for detachable engagement in a correspondingly shaped recess 4: in a bracl-ret or plate This bracket is bolted to astationary support as indicated at 6. From this constritict-ion it will be seen that the fran'ie may be quickly arranged in place and just as readily dc tached, and, by u'oviding a number of brackets at different points in the shop it will be readily seen that the drill. may be conveniently used at diii'erent points. The
screw 11. a This of the screw.
Renewed September 6, 1922. Serial no. 586,537. guide bar 7 has its secured to the frame detachably connected 8 of a shape stationary in the use upper end detachably while the lower end is to a foot 8. This foot and size to bear against the support as indicated at 9 so that of the drill the guide bar 7 will be substantially braced so as to be prevented I from being subject to strains. is also provided the reception of This foot 8 with a depression 10 for the lower end of the feed feed screw 11 is reduced so as to form a shoulder 12 engaging a portion of the frame 1 so as to prevent disliilacement A hand wheel 13 is connected to the feed. screw for operating the same.
(lo-operating with the feed screw is a table 141 that is guided bar 7.
it is. of course, to be understood that the invention may be constructed in various other manners and the parts associated in in its movement by the different relations'and. therefore, 1. do not desire to be limited. in any manner exceptas set forth in the claims hereunto appended.
Having thus described my inventionwhat I claim is- 1. In a device of the character described a fran'ie havinga tapering dovetail shaped rib. a plate for attaching to a stationary support and having' a recess for the reception of said rib. a guide bar having its upper end detuchably connected to the frame, and a foot detachably connected to the lower end of the bar and shaped to bear against the stationary support for steadying the bar.
2.. A drill comprising a frame, drilling means arranged at one end of the frame, a brackethavinp; a detachable tongue and groove connection with the frame, a guide bar depending from the frame. a foot screwed to the bar andshaped to bear against the stationary support, a table slid-ably guided by the bar, and a feed screw for rotatable connection with the frame, a screw thread ei'ig'a ement with the table and having a. bearing in said foot.
In testimony whereof I aifix ASHMEAD B.
my signature.
