Denmark, No. 3,043, filed 27 September, 1920; Norway, No. 21,893, filed 29 September, 1920), of which the following isa specification. i
This invention relatestotyping apparatus for labels, and is of that kind in whioh. the
impression iseffected by a vertically moving type-box furnished with exchangeable type. Existing apparatus have the objection that for change of type in printing 1t 1s 1 necessary to introduce afresh set of type from a suitable store, so that the use of such apparatus is expensive in material and in time Wasted.
It is my object, first, to provide a compact apparatus for the purposewhlch contains a plurality of slidable type carriers 0'1? select types for immediate printing; and,
second, to provide said apparatus with a simple device forspacing and adjusting the length of labels.
f In the following description of an apparatus embodying the above features, reference Will be hadto the. accompanying drawings,
in which a L Figure 1 18 a slde elevation, partly in section, of the complete apparatus; Fig. 2,
a. longitudinalsection and Fig. 3', a plan oi the type carrier;while Fig. 1 shows aside view of the device for altering the spacing.
The vertically movable typebox contains, according to the example shown on the drawings, six type carriers 1 which. can he slid parallel along the box 2 on guides 3 fixed. on the bottom plate 1, eachcarrier be 1 ing fitted with a headbutton 5by which it can be pushed along. As shown. in Figs. 2 and 3, each type CELII'lQT lS arranged at one side for large type and at the other end for small type of which latter there are two rows for one row of the large type.
The bottom plate 4t 01' the box 2 has an aperturefi equal tothe. largest printing surface through. which the type 73 descends.
Thus, by shifting any type carrier to one orother side small or large type 1sv brought over the aperture 6 for" the desired impression on the label, The box 2has a over the type in actual use. The spindle .17
is fitted in a hinged how 19 so arranged as 'to be thrown back after the, release of a spring catch 20, then allowing ofthe lifting of the cover 18 and giving access to the type. The vertical lift of the typebox. whose up and down motion is guided by stems 11 lodged in sockets 12, is effected by means of a crankshaft 13 and cam 141. The latter is such as to impart to the typeboK a quick hit after an impression and then keep the box elevated until the unfinished label 15 has been suitably advanced in the manner and by the meanshereinafter described. Meanwhile an inkribbon has advanced in the usual manner and when new the tensioned springs 16 pull down the typeboi:
stroke is obtained; for typing thus ensuring for perfect and clear impressions. lnstead of an ink-ribbon, other inking means may he adopted. 1
The proper forward spacing of the strip 15 for the label is ellected as follows: When the typebox is elevated, a cam 21 on the shaft 13 depresses the lever 22 which by means oi a link 23 pulls round a spring-controlled arm 24l'carrying a. pawl 25, said arm turn ing on afixed shaft 26. The pawl 25 then turns the ratchet wheel 27 and a toothed wheel 28 fastthereto. The toothed Wheel turns a smaller wheel 29 controlling the spacing roller 30 with its pressure roller 31 and so advances the strip 15.
In the constructional example here shown,
. the cam 21 can only impart an invariable stroke to the lever 22. In order to provide variation of spacing, a lost motion is adopted. which renders a variable portion of the lever stroke inoperative. The loose ratchet 27 is close to a loose disc 32 on the shaft 26, said disc having an overhanging rim encircling the periphery of the ratchet 27. The rim. of the disc 32 is cut out for a suitable portion to expose the ratchet and ensure to the pawl 25 the maximum of spacing action; this being equal to a complete revolution of the rollers 30 and 31. To alter the spacing, the disc 32 is turned by means of a pointer 84 fast thereon and moving over a scale 35 so as to cause the pawl 25 to slip over the disc 32 for any desired portion of leverstroke before engaging the ratchet 27. This then enables the turn of the ratchet and the spacing of the strip 15 to be varied. The severing of a label is automatically effected by a knife 37 fixed to the box 2 above the platen, whereby the printed label is cut oil at the printing of another label.
I claim:
1. A typing apparatus for labels, consisting of a typebox, slidable type carriers within same, means for guiding, shifting and stopping said carriers in position in an aperture of the typebox, a platen beneath the aperture, mechanism for lifting the box, and springs for pulling same to make the impressions.
2. A typing apparatus for labels, consisting of a typebox, slidable type carriers, each loaded with large and small type, within the box, means for positioning the type selected for an impression, resilient means for performing the impression, means for holding down the butts of the type for an impression, lifting means for the typebox, and a variable-stroke device for the forward spacing of a label-strip.
