l iidfr., a citizen of the United States and residing at Altoona, Blair County, State of zjlpennsylvania, have invented certain new and `juseful Improvements in Side-Frame and jjdournal-Box Constructions, of which the following is a specification.
W 'llhe present invention relates to railroad wears and particularly to side frame and iljournal box constructions.
l The object of the invention is to provide a modified form of side frame and a correspondingly formed journal' box, together l with novel means for securing the side frame and journal box together, the resulting structure being strong, efficient in use, and.
lighter than prior constructions, besides having features rendering it safer in actual use than similar devices of the prior art.
ilu a well known type of side frame and journal box construction, the journal box .rests against a fiat under surface at the end of l,the side frame and is secured in such position by means of tie bars' which are riveted to the side frame. lin another well known type of such construction, the side frame 'is provided at its end with spaced jaws between which the journal box is positioned and a tti horizontally or vertically disposed bolt extends through the side frame and engages the journal box, the bolt serving to keep the journal box from separating from the side frame when the car truck is lifted.
lln the present invention the advantageous features of these prior types are-retained and theirr disadvantages largely eliminated. According to the present invention the journal i box rests against a flat surface of the side frame but the use of the usual tie bars, heretofore found necessary, is avoided. The' journal box is also retained between jaws on the side frame but these jaws are of relatively short and light construction and have inclined bearing surfaces instead of vertical bearing surfaces. `The jaws are, however, sloped at such an angle vthat the journal box is prevented from leaving the frame in a,
longitudinal direction due to the application of the brakes. Bolts are provided to prevent the separation of the journal box and side frame when the latter is lifted and j the journal box is so formed that the bolts at the point of its attachment to the side frame showing, also in section, the end portion of the side frame.
Figure 2 is a. side elevation of the'journal box showing a portion of the side frame.
Figure 3 is a section on line 3-3 of F igure 1 and Figure t is a view similar to Figure 1, showing in section a modified form of journal box attached to the side frame.
The side frame is indicated at S in the drawings, one end of this frame only being shown, it being understood that the frame is symmetrically formed and of the usual construction except at its ends. Frame S has a fiat seating surface 10 on its lower side, which is normally horizontal, and on each side of this surface are inclined seating surfaces l1 and 12 which are arranged at angles of forty-five degrees to the horizontal. The portions 13 and 14 on which these seating surfaces are formed constitute respectively jaws which retain the journal box J This journal box hasa fiat seating sur-I face 15 and outwardly facing inclined seating surfaces 16 and 17 respectively, these three surfaces being adapted to abut against the seating surfaces 10, 11 and 12 respectively of the side frame. .laws 13 and 111 of the frame are provided with apertures 18 and 19 for the passage of bolts 20 and21 respectively. The journal box J has lateral flanges 22 and 23 which are slotted at 2t and 25 respectively to receive the shanks of bolts 2O and 21, the slots, however, not being sufficiently wide to allow the heads of the bolts to pass through. Small additional laterally projecting iianges 26 and 27 are located immediately below slots 24 and 25 and extend laterally to serve as abutments limiting the downward movement of bolts 2O` and 21 in case the nuts on the upper ends of these bolts should come off.
The jaws 13 and 1i prevent movement of the journal box longitudinally relative to the frame, and the bolts 2O and 21 at all times` inclined inner walls so that the tie' bolts may be inserted at such an angle that their heads may pass by the laterally projecting shoulders 52 of the journal box. however, the journal box and side frame have been assembled, the bolts can drop down in a'vertical direction only, and of course cannot fall out since their lower headed ends will strike and rest upon ledges 52.
It will be apparent to those skilled in the lart that other modifications might be made Within the scope of the invention, which is not limited to the exact form of axle box and side frame disclosed.
Having thus described my invention, what is claimed as new and desired to be secured by Letters Patent is:
1. -A side frame and journal box construcltion, comprising in combination, a side frame having a seating surface for a journal box and also having an opening to receive a retaining bolt, a journal box bearing against the seating surface of the side frame and ,having bolt receiving openings, a bolt lextending through said openings, having its head at the lower end and asecuring nut at- 'its 'upper end, and said journal box having means below the bolt to prevent its escape, in case of-the loosening ofthe nut. A side frame and'journal box construction comprising in combination, a side frame having a seating surface for a journal box and a Asubstantially vertical opening for a retaining bolt, a journal box bearing against the seating surface of the side frame and also vhaving a bolt receiving opening, in
alignment with the opening in the side frame, a bolt having its head below the lower end of the opening in thejournal box and having its shank extending through the aligne-d'openings of the box and side frame to a point above the upper end of the ope1ring in the side frame, securing means on the upper end of said shank, and means below the head of the bolt to support the same to maintain the shank in said openings, in case theI bolt securing means is inoperative.
3. A side frame and journal box c0nstruction comprising in combination, a side frame having a seating surface for a journal box and a substantially vertical opening for a retaining bolt, a journal box bearing against lVhen,

A side frame and journal box construction comprising in combination, a side frame having a seating surface for a journal box and a substantially vertical opening for'a retaining bolt, a journal box bearing against the seating surface of the side frame and provided with a laterally projecting flange having an opening in alignment with the opening in the side frame, a bolt having its head below said flange and its shank extending through said aligned apertures, securing means on the upper end of the bolt, and a second ange on said journal box beneath the first mentioned liange for supporting the bolt head and retaining the shank in said openings, when the securing means is inoperative.
6. A side trame and journal box construction comprising in combination, a side frame having a seating surface for a journal box and a. substantially vertical opening .tor a retaining bolt, a journal box bearing against the seating surface ot the side trame and provided with a laterally projecting flange having a. slot therein in alignment with the opening in the side frame, a bolt having its head below said flange and its shank extending through said aligned slot and opening, securing means on the upper end of said bolt, and means for"supporting said bolt in position when the securing means is inoperative.
7. A journal box having a laterally projecting flange provided with an opening to receive a bolt, and having a second fiange below the first ange to support the lower end of the bolt, for the purpose set forth.
