Be it known that 1, Louis J. ltoooi-rnnnu, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and Stateof California, have invented a new and useful Automobile Package Car rier, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is an article carrier adapted to be mounted on the running board of an automobile, in order to support a canteen and a water bag.
The invention aims to provide a device of the class mentioned which will be strong in construction and be capable of ready attachment to a running board, novel means being provided for supporting a canteen and a water bag.
It is within the province of the disclosure to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the invention appertains.
Withthe above and other objects in view,
which will appear asthe descriptionpro-J ceeds, the invention resides in the combina-y tion and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that, within the scope of what is claimed, changes in the precise embodiment of the invention shown can be made without departing from thespirit of the invention,
Tn the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows in front elevation,,a device constructed 1n accordance with the 1nvention; Figure 2 isa rear elevation; Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2; and Figure 4: is a. fragmental horizontal section taken through a portion of the front plate and one of the wings.
.The device forming the subject matter of i this application preferably is made of metal and includes a. front plate 1 which is rearwardly inclined, the longitudinal edges of the front plate merging into rearwardly extended wings 2 which are in the form of right triangles, preferably. The wings 2 are provided with outwardly extended flanges 3 to which are secured bars i, which may be channel members. The bars& are bent to form underlying fingers ,5wherein set screws 6 are inserted, the screws 6 being provided at their upper ends with rotatable heads 7. The running board 8 of an automobile is adapted to support the front plate 1, the fingers 5 extending beneath the running board. The screws 6 may be tightened up, to bear against the running board and, thus, the deviceis held on the running board. AuU'shaped reinforcement 9 extends across the upperedge of the front plate 1, and extended downwardly along the rear edges of the wings 2, the reinforcement 9 being enclosed in a bead 10 formed on the rear edges of the wings 2 and on the upper edge of the plate 1. Hooks 11 are disposed on the forward surface of the front plate 1 and are extended backwardly and rearwardly across the upper portion of the reinforcement 9 and across the corresponding part of the head 10,
the rear ends of the hooks being secured as indicated at 12 to the rear surface of the front plate 1. The hooks 11 are adapted to cooperate with eyes 1i on a water bag 15, in order to hold a water bag suspended on the forward or outer surface of the front plate 1. There is an advantage in providing the reinforcement 9, since the weight of the water bag 15 is carried by the hooks 11 into the reinforcement 9 and not into the wings 2 or the front plate 1, primarily. These elements, therefore, may be made of relatively thin sheet metal.
To the rear of the front plate 1 is disposed a cradle denoted generally by the numeral 16. The cradle comprises a tran verse strip 17 having its ends attached to the flanges 2, a bottom strip 18 having its ends attached to the flanges 2, and a back strip 19, havingits ends attached to the intermediate portions of the strips 17 and 18. In the cradle thus formed, a canteen 20 may be placed. One end of a spring latch 21 is connected to the front plate 1, the latch projecting rearwardly and engaging the canteen 20. to hold the same in the cradle 16, as shown clearly in Figure 8 of the drawings. The front plate 1 is supplied with grooves 22, extended vertically thereof, adjacent to the sides of the front plate. These grooves 22 serve to direct downwardly, any moisture or liquid which may accumulate on the front plate, from the canteen 20 or water bag 15. As a consequence, the water does not find its way into the angles 23 defined by the plate 1 and the wings 2, a rusting and a deterioration of the device being prevented accordingly.
Having thusdescribed the invention, what is claimed is 2- i 1. Ina device of the class described, a rearwardly inclined front plate provided at its sides with rearwardly extended wings; fingers carried by the wings and extended therebeneath; clamping devices mounted in the fingers; and articleholding means on the front plate.
2. In a device of the class described, a rearwardly inclined front plate provided at its sides with rearwardly extended wings; clamping means mounted on the lower ends of the wings; a U-shaped reinforcement mounted in the rear edges of the wings and extended along the upper edge of the -trout plate; and a hook on the forward surface of the front plate, the hook. being carried rearwardly across the reinforcement.
3. In a device of the class described, a
rearwardly inclined front plate proyided at its sides with rearwardly extended wings; a cradle disposed behind the plate and as" sembled with the wings; and a latch ex tended above the cradle and mounted on the front plate; and means for securing the device to the running board of an automobile.
In testimony that I claim the loregoin as my own, I have hereto allixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS J. ROUGLILEAU.
