To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, FLOYD SI-JERRELL, a

' citizen of the United States, residing at Audubon, in the county of Camden and State of New Jersey have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Billboards, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.

Bill boards and display posters now in 'use have the faces, which are supplied with advertisements, exposed to the weather. Furthermore advertisements can only be seen in day light or moon light, or when adjacent street lamps or electric lamps, or when supplied with electric lighting above.

It is the purpose of the present invention to provide a bill board, the advertisements upon which are visible at all times, day or night, and the darker it is, the better the sign or advertisement appears. This is due to. the fact that the advertisement is supplied upon the bill board by means of any suitable luminous paint.

This bill board may display posters, bulletins, signs of any kind, directions, sign posts or signals, and it is the aim to construct a bill board which is hollow, suitably braced in a perpendicular position, and includes a protecting transparent cover, such as glass, so that the advertisement can be clearly seen, day or night, and yet be protected from the weather.

Still another purpose is to provide a hollow bill board, which may be used byadvertisers, manufacturers, and at railroad crossings or the like, there being a shed or drain board at the top, to preclude the weather, namely to shed the rain, and keep it from the interior of the bill board, thereby avoiding injury to the signer advertisement or trafic directions, which are applied to the front' face of the back board.

A further purpose is to provide a bill board wherein the transparent covering may be easily removed, for the purpose of changing the advertisement, sign or the like upon the board.

A still further purpose is to provide openings at the top and bottom of the bill board, which will permit of ventilation, so as to prevent moisture from collectin on the interior, and causing the inner ace of the transparent covering or lass from becoming steamed, which woul otherwise prevent Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of the improved bill board constructed in ac- 4 cordance with the invention;

Referring to the drawings, 1 and 2 designate the end upright posts of the bill board and 3 denotes an intermediate shorter post, which supports the weight of the bill board, and 4 denotes an intermediate upright post, which is of a height substantially equal to the end upright post 2.

Secured to the rear faces of the upright posts 1 and 2 is what may be termed a back board 5 of the bill board. This board 5 may be secured to the end posts 1 and 2 by any suitable means, such as screws, bolts, nails or the like, and may be constructed of any suitable material, preferably. sheet metal,

although thin wood may be employed. 'This board-5 carries on its inner face a sheet of sultable materlal, such as canvas, compo board, cardboard, or the like 6. This maof the intermediate perpendicular post 4,.

posts 1 and 2, while the post 8 is in the rear of the intermediate post 4. Suitable braces 9 are provided for the end posts 1 and 2, there being metal strips 10 connecting the upper forward ends of the braces 9 and the perpendicular posts 1 and 2. The back board is provided with suitable openings 11, through which certain of the connecting strips 10 pass, so as to be secured on the inner side faces of the posts 1 and 2. Suitable bolts, rivets or the like 12 secure these metal strips or connectors in place. The braces 9 extend downwardly and rearwardly toward the brace posts 7, and have their rear ends connected by metal strips 13 to the posts 7. Suitable bolts, rivets, screws or the like 14 may be used for connecting the strips 13 in position.

An intermediate brace 15 has its upper end connected by metal strips 16 to the intermediate post 4. The brace 15 extends downwardly and rearwardly and has its lower end connected by metal strips 17 to the intermediate brace post 8.

Diagonal braces 19 are connected to the braces 9 and to the lower end of the intermediate rearwardly and downwardly extending brace 15. I

Suitable brace bars 20 connect the intermediate brace 15 and the intermediate post 4, while braces 21 connect the end posts 1 and 2 and the inclined braces 9. By means of this brace construction, the bill board is reinforced in position, as are also the various braces 9, 15, and 19.

' Secured to the front faces of the end posts 1 and 2 and the short post 3 is a supporting bar 22, which supports the transparent covering such as glass or the like 23 upon the face of the bill board. In fact angle strips (which constitute trims and a sort of a frame) are engaged with the upper and lower and end edges of the transparent covering or glass. The lower angle strip 24 is secured to the bottom board 25 of the bill board by means of screws 26. The perpendicular flange of this angle strip 24 overlies the face of the glass or'other covering and disposed intermediate thereof is a layer of felt or other suitable fibre filler 27, thereby preventin the metal from coming in contact with t e glass, and causing injury thereto. Any other material other than felt, possibly asbestos, rubber, hair or any fibre may be used between the metal trim and the glass.

The end angle strips or trims 28 are secured to the end posts 1 and 2, and have certain of their flanges overlying the face of the glass or other coverin to hold the glass in place there being a suitable filler similar to the filler 27 to prevent injury to the glass.

The upper angle strip or trim 29 is secured by screws or the like 30 to the top board 31 of the sign board.

One of the flanges of the angle strip or trim 29 overlies the face of the glass, to further assist in holding the same in position, there being a filler similar to 27 between the strip and the glass.

Arranged upon the top of the bill board, and on an incline, so as to shed the rain and the like to the rear of the board is a water shed or drain board 33. In fact the forward edge or the forward portion of this drain board or water shed is supported higher than its rear portion by means of the supports 34, which rest upon the topboard of the structure. This is for the purpose of providing a space between the top board and the drain board. The top'board is provided with a plurality of openings 35, to permit a circulation of air between the covering and the back board of the structure, particularly due to the fact that the bottom board 25 is also provided with a plurality of openings 36, through which the air may pass into the space between the covering and the back board. As previously stated the drain board or shed protrudes considerably beyond the front face of the covering, so as to keep the rain and the like from the face of the glass, which would otherwise so wet the same as to render it invisible, whereby the sign or advertisement would not appear therethrough. The drain board or shed may extend any suitable distance beyond the face of the covering.

It is to be noted that the metal strips or trims may be easily removed, to permit theglass or other covering to be removed from its position, so that the sign or advertisement upon the material 6 of the back board may be changed. In fact if necessary the material itself may be removed, and another covering or piece 6 applied, with a new sign, advertisement or traffic signal thereon.

The invention having been set forth, what is claimed is 1. In a bill board, a hollow body comprising perpendicular posts, a back board secured to said posts, and carrying upon its front face an advertisement, said back board being secured to the rear of said posts, and an additional intermediate post secured to the rear face of the back board, a bottom board having openings therein, means for supporting the bottom board, a top board having openings, and a transparent covering secured to the front face of the first named posts and support spaced from the back board.

3. In a bill board, a perpendicular hollow structure including a back board having upon its inner face an advertisement sheet, a transparent covering over the back board to render the advertisement visible, cushioning and packing means to hold the transparent coverin in position, the top and bottom of the ho ow structure being open to permit of ventilation, and a watershed projectin from the top and laterally upwardly beyon the transparent covering.
