Be it known that l, FERDINAND PAUL BAUMANN, .a citizen or' .the Republic of Switzerland, residing at Kusnacht, in the Canton of Zurich, Switzerland, have invented vcertain new and useful improvements in Beating Apparatus, of which :the following is a speciiication.

Tlhis invention has iteiterence .to beaters or beatingsapparatus ot the kind wherein provision -is made within a housing of a rotatable drum or roller adapted to carry a series of beaters7 and a cushion upon which .the objectsto be freed of dust and Ydirt are placed and caused to be beaten when the .drum or roller is rotated.

, The characteristic and novel features .ot my invention consist, firstly, ot the particular arrangement and `mounting oi' the beaters on the rotatable roller and, secondly, in yconstructing the beater housing r-of a bottom part which is .open at the top and contains ,the rotatable roller, and a .cover part comprising` two similar portions which are so .connected to the said bottom part :that they are adapted to be ladjusted vertically and. backwards and forwards in relation to the bottom part, all 'for the ypurpose herein aitter described.

To carry out my invention7 I make provision of a housing which in this case is of rectangular section and comprises a bot-tom part l open at the top, and a cover-part formed ot two similar portions 2 and 3 fitting over the open top of the bottoni part. rl`he cover portions 2 and 3 are connected to the shape of a bell.

lvlounted transversely of the bottom part or' the housing, vand journalled in bearings 13 which are secured to the sides tot the said bottom part by means of angle-irons le, is a tubular roller l5 carrying a. series olf beat-- ers lo ot flexible material, for instance leather. The roller vfor this purpose is pro vvided with a corresponding number oi bores l? which are arranged in a spiral line, Vlg'. l, each bore extending througl'i the tubular part ot the roller 1.5 and gradually widening at one end in order to receive a sleeve 18 oi corresponding shape, in the present case of Each of these sleeves is riveted at its top to the roller and, in turn, serves to receive a spring i9 o'f which one end is attached to the roller by mea-ns oil a screw 20, while the other end at or about the iniddle o' the length of the sleeve is fashioned into a coil. Also secured at 20 and made to extend through the coil of the springs are the aforementioned beaters 16.

Assuming now the roller l5 to be rotated b any suitable power transmitted to the pulley Ql and the beaters swung in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 8, the resulting swinging and vibrating movement o1 the springs vimpart a spiral movement to the beaters as indicated in Fig. et, which movement is accentuated by the play sideways ot the springs 19 in the rounded-oil or bellshaped part of the sleeves 18. The beaters, at the moment of coming in contact with the cushion 12, thus actually assume the form of a spiral thereby increasing` the extent and consequently the ell'ect ot .each hit on the object to be beaten and cleaned. Owing to the bell-shaped ltorm ot the sleeves -18 the springs are easily guided and also safeguarded against undue strain or breakage.

[t will be understood that it it is desired to treat objects too large to be introduced into the housing, -for instance mattresses, the apparatus is adjusted as shown in Figs. 5 and G and the mattress placed on the table formed by the adjusted cover portions 2 and 3 and the iframe 7. The cushion 12 is removed, the beaters then acting on the mattress` from below `through the opening 7 and against the cords 7".

It will furthermore be understood that the usual suction device needs to be provided for the dust to be sucked oli, care having to be taken that the air current flows directly above and past the objects to be beaten so that each particle of dust is at once drawn away from such object. The suction device which, as it is not intended to form part of this invention is not shown, may be connected to and made to communicate with the housing at 22, designating` the air-outlet.

Having now fully described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is j l. In the herein-described beating apparatus, the combination, with a housing consistingot a bottom part which is open at the .top and a cover comprising two similar portions hinged to and fitting over the bottoni part; of means to secure the' said hinged portions together and hold them in raised, that is, closed position; a roller journaled in thebottom part and arranged transversely ot the cover portions; a series of beaters of iexible material carried by the roller and mounted in a spiral line thereon; means to adjust the aforesaid cover portions into the lower, that is, open position; and a frame adapted to be litted between the adjusted cover portions, the said frame having a rectangular opening and cords fixed across the saine and the said opening and cords being within reach ot' the beaters, all as and/tor the purpose set-forth. In the.herein-described beating apparatus, the combination, with a housing having an opening in one of its walls, ot' a cover comprising two similar portions hinged to and fitting over the housing; a cushion mounted within the housing and immediately behind the said openingand adapted to receive the goods to be beaten; a roller journaled in the `housing parallel to the cushion and having a series of bores which are disposed in a spiral line and gradually widened at one end; sleeves fitted in said bores; acoil-spring mounted in each ot the sleeves and proj ecting trom the widened end thereof, aibeater oi Flexible material fitted in each spring and extending. therethrough, and means to tasten one end ot the springs andthe correspondingcnd of the beater to the roller, all .substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
