This invention relates to scoring machines and particularly for scoring strips of paperboard or equivalent.
More particularly, the invention relates to a scoring mechanism constructed to score a strip of paper board, or equivalent, supplied from a reel of paper board, or otherwise of indefinite length.
The invention comprises-generally means for supplying a strip of paper board, means for grinding or otherwise scoring the-paper board at thedesired locations corresponding to the corners or other pointsof bend or defleet-ion and means for controlling the advance of the strip of paper board relative to such scoring means for effecting the required scorings. at the required locations. In the most preferred forms of the invention, the scoring means is of the continuously operating type, and adjustably mounted to provide for adjustment of the depth of scoring and to compensate for reduced diameter of the scoring device after redressing. In such preferred forms of the invention, the supplied strip of paper board is moved or flexed into and out of contact with the soon ing device, by a movable support comprising faces arranged at an angle to one another and adapted to successively receive and support successive portions of the strip to effect mutual contact between the scoring device and the strip at the desired locations, corresponding to the corners or bends of the resultant box,or similar article.

in the form of the invention set forth in detail hereinafter, the scoring machine is a unit designed for the manufacture of necked cigarette boxes and. is arranged for the simultaneous treatment of strips of paper board corresponding respectively to the cover rim, neck and tray rim, whereby the three strips supplied from three reels of paper board are subjected to the same temperature and humidity conditions during the treatment. However, it will be apparent that the invention is also applicable for scoring a single strip of paper board or two or other number of strips, simultaneously or non-simultaneously.
Further features and objects of the invention will be more fully understood from the following description and the accompanying drawings, in which- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of a scoring mechanism comprising our invention;
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of Fig. 1 viewed from the right;
Fig. 3 is a top plan view with certain parts being removed and other parts shown in horizontal section;
Fig. 4, is a detail side elevation of an intermittent control of the feed of the strips of paper board; and
Fig. 5 is a detail side elevation of a modified form of-feed control, showing a continuone feed of the strips of paper board.
Referring to the drawings, the scoring mechanism as shown comprises the outer fixed frame members 1, 2 connected together in spaced relation by the tie rods 3, and the inner, transverse frame l, vertically adjustable with respect to the frame members 1, 2, by means of the slots and clamping bolts 5. The scoring machine as shown, is constructed as a unit to be clamped at the front end of a unit devised by us for producing simultaneously, i. e., under the same temperatureand humidity the cover, neck and tray parts of a so-called cigarette box, i. e., a necked paper box, and embodying certain principles of treatment, as fully set forth in our copending application Serial No. 134,306, filed December 1, 1916, entitled Method of making boxes. The strip producing machine or unit, known by us as the strip producer is set forth in our copend ing application SerialNo. 279,486, filed Feb. 27, 1919, and entitled Paper box machine.
The -treatments of the three strips of paper board correspondingto the cover rim, neck and tray rim, in the order named as viewed from left to right in F 2, are generally similar, and accordingly the detail construction and operation of the three sets of corresponding machine parts are hereinafter described by particular reference to the set of machine parts for treatment of the paper board to form the cover rim, exceptin'g where'specialreference ismade to the other two sets of machine parts.
The indefinite length of strip 6 of paper board is supplied from a roll or reel, suitably mounted on any approved individual mount or support (not shown). Thestrip 6 is threaded on the guide 7, having the lateral guide flanges 8, thence under in contact with the under iace 9 of the shaft 10, The guides '4' are mounted on the common shaft ihndjustably positioned in the end frames 1, 2, by set screws, as shown, or in any'other approved manner. V The strip 6 is then threaded betweenthe grinder 12 and the rotatable support 13, arranged and coacting as described more fully hereinafter, to effect the scoring of the strip to the jdesired extent or depth and at the desired locations cor respendingto the corners or bends of the resultingarticle. Such strip producing machine embodies means tor advancing and keeping taut each strip thereby controlling the advance of. the strip through the scoring unit Each scoring device 12 shown as a grinder, is fixedly mounted on a hollow shaft 18, to which is also fixed the gear 1.9. Through the hollow shaft 18 is passed the stud 20, having at one end the washer 21 and nut 22, and its other end supported in the adjustable box 23, shown as slidable within the slotted arms 2d, depending from the transverse frame el. It will be noted that in the intermittent drive the rotation of each form 13 is counter to that of its scoring grinder wheel 12, thereby permitting the unidirectional actuation of such intermittent drive to be untilized, and attain accurate registration of the scored portions of the strip. Such intermittent ac tuation of the forms 13 is adapted to the intermittent feed of the strip producer, such as shown in our copending application Serial No. 279,486, as aforesaid.
For continuous actuation of the forms 13, the shaft 45, as shown in Fig. 5, is provided with the sprocket 67, fixed thereto, and driven by the chain 68, in turn driven by suitable driving gearing on the cam shaft of the strip producer.
It will be noted that by adjustment of the respective stems 2 5 of the scoring means 12, the depth of scoring is determined. The angle of address or presentation of the strip with respect to the scoring means is determined by adjustment of the transverse frame a vertically with respect to the end frames 1, 2, by means of the slots 5 and lock bolts 5 whereby the position of scoring of the strip is regulated in reference to the fixed line of feed passing through the under surface of the front shaft 10. The rear shaft 69 corresponds to the front shaft 10, and also serves to support the idler sprocket 70. Incident to wear of the grinding wheels 12 and redressing, the adjustment of the stems 25 compensates for the reduced diameter of the effective grinding surface. It will be noted that whereas the gears 30, respectively driving the driven gears 19, of the sets of scoring devices, may be mountedin stationary bearings in the end frames 1, 2, the clearances afforded by the teeth of each set of driving and driven gears, permits considerable latitude of adjusted position of each individual gear 19 relative to its driving gear 30.
The intermittent form of the invention, as shown, attains a period of rest only at a determined stage of operation, namely, corresponding to the location of a length of a strip where it is severed in the strip producer the other scorings being performed while the strip is being continuously advanced, similarly as is continuously performed in our form of continuous feed.
