Be it known that I, RICHARD A. CLARKE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chattanooga, in the county of Hamilton and State of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lifting Jacks, of which the following is a specification. i
This invention relates to quick adjusting lifting jacks.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a rapid operating lifting jack in which the parts are disposed in cooperating relation to facilitate manipula tion of the same.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a lifting jack of the above described character, which is collapsible, permitting the folding of the same in compact form for'portability. v
A further ob 'ect of the invention is the provision of a lifting jack of the above described character, which is simple in construction, durable, constructed of standard parts, and one which can be manufactured at a relatively low cost.
Other objects and advantages will be apparent during the course of the following detailed description.

designates a vehicle jack, including the base B, having a standard C rigidly mounted thereon, said standard provided with a lifting member or sleeve D. A jack operating means E, is pivotally mounted upon the base B, and adapted for operation by a detachable handle structure F, for operating the lifting member D.
It is preferred that the jack be constructed of standard parts, durably constructed, and to this end the base B comprises a pair of substantially rectangular sections 10 and 11 of wrought iron or some analogous durable material. The abutting faces of the sections 10 and 11 are provided with suitable recesses for receiving the circular standard C; said standard 0 being rigidly affixed at its lower end 12 in the recesses of said sections 10 and 11, as by rivets or bolts 13, which extend from side to side through the sections 10 and 11, thus riveting said sec tions together. Suitable -V-shaped depressions 14 are provided in the abutting faces of the sections 10 and 11 and forwardly of the base 13, for the pivotal mounting of the operating means E, and which will be subseof with the notches or teeth 15, said teeth being so disposed on the supporting standard C as toprovide upper horizontal resting faces16; p I
The lifting member D is tubular in formation, and preferably circular, to be re ciprocably disposed over the standard C. The sleeve D is in reality a piece of ordinary pipe, and is provided adjacent its lower end with the adjustablepawl structure 16. The
pawl structure 16, includes a retaining ring 17 adapted for disposition on the exterior surface of the sleeve D, the same being adjustably clamped thereon'in any desired position by the set screw 18. The portion of the member 17 opposite the set screw 18 is provided with a pair of forwardly and downwardly projecting fingers 19, adapted for pivotally supporting a pawl 20. The pawl structure 16 is so positioned upon the sleeve D that when the sleeve is reciprocated over the standard C, the pointed end 21 ofthe pawl 20 will be forced into contact with the teeth 15 by reason of the weighted end 22 of the pawl. As the sleeve D is moved upwardly over the standard C, the pointed end 21 will ride freely over said teeth. However, as the sleeve D descends, the weighted end 22 of the pawl 20 will force the end 21 into engagement on an upper horizontal seat 16 of a tooth l5, and thus prevent the sleeve D from farther descension on the standard C. V
An axle or article supporting member 25, is adjustably positioned exteriorly upon the lifting member D, the same preferably comprising a projecting supporting flange 26 having a suitable aperture 27. therein ,for disposition'over the. member D. A suitable boss 28 may be formed upon thesupporting member 25 opposite the projection 26, for the adjustable disposition ofa clamping set screw 29, adapted to engage the sleeve D, whereby the supporting member 25 may be maintained in any predetermined position on the sleeve D. j
Referring to; the jack operating means E, fulcrum lever 30 thereof is pivotally connected by a pin 31 upon an end thereof in the facing depressions 14 of the base B, whereby saidfulcrum lever 30may be oscillated in a vertical plane toward or away from the standard C. A lifting lever 35 preferably formed of two bars 35 of sheet material is pivotal-lyiconnected by a pin 36 engaging said bars 35 intermediate their ends,;whereby said lifting lever 35 may be oscillated upon the upper end of the oscillating fulcrum lever 3Ov for a purpose to be subsequently setforth. Therlifting lever 35 oscillates; in the same plane of movement as the fulcrum lever30, and the forward projecting ends of .the bars 35 are provided with a hooked .member 38, securely riveted to the ends of said bars 35 for maintaining said bars in spaced relation. The hook 40 ofthe member 38. projects forwardly from the extreme ends of the bars 35 and as illustrated in the drawings. The fulcrum point 3.6 of the lifting lever 35 ,isdisposed closer toward the hook 40 than toward the opposite end of said lever. This end ofthe lever 35 is provided with a forked handle engaging member 45, provided with a relatively fiat attaching 1 portion 46 adapted for disposition intermediate the extreme ends of the bars 35, and for rigid attachment thereto as by rivets 47. A plurality of fingers or fprongs 4L8:are provided integral upon the attaching portion 46, the same being preferably circular in formation and pro ecting in vertical succession at acute angles with respect to each other. i
The handle F is preferably tubular in formation and composed of ordinary pipe. This handle F is preferably formed of a pair'of sections 50 and 51 of equal length; a section 50 being provided with. a plug 52 riveted therein and provided with a forsections 50 and 51, for rocking wardly extending screw threaded shank 53, adapted for receiving the internally screw threaded end 54 of thesection 51, whereby said sections 50 and 51 may be detachably secured together in rigid relation. The handle F is adapted to receive any one of the prongs 48 in the bores 55 of either of the the lifting lever 35,.
A member 57 isprovided for adjustment upon the exterior of the sleeve D, the same being providedwith a s'uitable clamping screw 58 to maintain it in position thereon. In operation, the jack structureis positioned beneath thearticle G te be operated upon, the sleeve D of coursej,lhaving been lowered upon thestandard C. In this position the supportingprojection 26" of the member 25 willloosely engage below the device or article G tov be lifted. The member 57 having been adjusted to the desired 10o height upon the sleeveD, theoperator next inserts the sleeve F over one of'the prongs 48 of thelifting lever 35, and upon oscillation of this lifting lever 35 upon its pivot point 36, the forward hook 4:0upon said lever will 10 engage the pin 61 of the member 57. As the operator places his weight, or a suitable force, upon thelhandle F, the lever 35 will of course exert an upward pressure upon the sleeve D, sliding the same upwardly over the standard C, until the projection 26 engages the article G, and said article G is raised. As the sleeve D comes to a set position on the standard C, the end 2]; of pawl 20 will be disposed over the hori .115 zontal surface 16 of a tooth 15; and when the weight of the operator isreleased from the lever F, said pawl 20. will engage this surface 16 to maintain the sleeve D in its adjusted position- ;Attention is called to the fact that as the lever 35 is rocked upon its pivot 36, the fulcrum 30 will likewise be rocked upon its pivot as illustrated in Figure l of the drawings. As the sleeve :D is raised upon the standard G, the handle F will of course be lowered toward the floor or. the groundsurfaceupon whichthe jackis positioned. To avoidinconvenience-incident to this, the prongs 48 have been provided, whereby the handle F maybe detached from the lower prong, and placed upon any succeeding prong as the sleeve D is raised.
hen, it is desired to release the jack from beneath the article (3i, the operator merely applies sufficient force to the lifting lever 35 whereby the pawl 20 is relieved from supporting the weight of the sleeve D, and by raising the weighted end 22 of the pawl 20, the sleeve D can be lowered over the standard C.
The improved jack can be folded in col lapsed position and to effect this result, the handle F is detached from the pawl 48, and upon rocking the fulcrum lever 30 upon its pivot toward the standard C, the lifting lever 35 can be placed into substantially parallel alignment with the standard C, to pro: vide a compact arrangement. The sections 50 and 51 can be detached and together with the exact structure can be placed in a convenient small enclosure (not shown) for transportation.
Various changes in the shape, size and arrangement of parts, may be made to the form of the invention herein shown and described, without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the claims.
I claim:
1. A jack, comprising in combination a base, a substantially circular standard rigidly attached in said base and provided with teeth notched in one side thereof, a tubular sleeve slidably disposed over the said circular standard, an article engaging support. adjustably disposed exteriorly on said sleeve, an adjustable pawl on said sleeve adapted for maintaining said sleeve in fixed position by engagement of the teeth on said standard, and means detachably engaging said sleeve for sliding said sleeve upon said standard. a
2. A jack, comprising'in combination a base, a lifting member reciprocably carried by said base, a fulcrum lever pivoted in a depression in said base and extending upwardly therefrom for oscillation in a vertical plane, a lifting lever oscillatively carried upon the upper free end of said pivoted fulcrum lever, a hook forwardly mounted upon said lifting lever and adapted for engagement with said lifting member, a plurality of prongs formed in vertical succession upon said lifting lever, and means for detachably engaging said prongs whereby said lifting lever may be oscillated for sliding said lifting member.
8. A jack comprising in combination a base, a substantially circular standard provided with notched teeth rigidly mounted in one end of said base, a tubular sleeve reciprocably mounted upon said sleeve, an article engaging support adj ustably mounted exteriorly upon said sleeve, .a pawl adjust ably mounted exteriorly upon said sleeve and adapted for engaging the teeth on said standard for supporting said sleeve in adjusted position on said standard, an attaching member adjustably disposed exteriorly on said sleeve, a fulcrum lever pivoted in the end of said base opposite said standard and projecting upwardly therefrom, a lifting lever pivotally mounted upwardly upon the free end of said fulcrum lever, a hook member on one end of said lifting lever adapted for engaging said attaching member on said sleeve, the opposite end of said lever provided with a plurality of prongs, and means for detachably engaging said prongs for rocking said lifting lever whereby said lifting sleeve may be slid upwardly on said standard.
4. As an article of manufacture, a jack lever comprising a pair of spaced longitudinal bars liaving a hooked member mounted thereon between said bars and projecting from one end thereof, and a forked member mounted between the bars on the end opposite said hooked member, to provide a plurality of engaging prongs in vertical succession thereon, and disposed at acute angles with respect to each other.
5. A jack, comprising in combination a base, a standard rigid on said base, a fulcrum lever pivotally mounted on said base adjacent said standard, a sleeve slidably mounted over said standard, a lifting lever pivotally mounted on the free end of said fulcrum lever, means for connection of said lifting lever and said sleeve, and pawl and ratchet means upon said standard and sleeve to maintain said sleeve in a predetermined position on said standard.
