The' arrangement of vdoor and car side is such that, as before stated, the plate portion 5 of the door seats beneath the horizontal leg 4 of angle 2, while the down-turned flange 6 of the door plate lies parallel with and just slightly insideV of that portion of the car side 1 that extends below the angle 2. When the door is fully closed the weight of the hook will cause it to drop into positionbeneath the angle 18, thereby sup- 'jA porting the door and` reventing its release until the hook 16 isI orced out of engagement with the door extension.
In order to prevent the accidental withdrawal of the hooks and the consequent release of the doors, each hook is provided with a lof'cking cam 21. This-cam is set at an acute angle to the line of, the car side, so as to conform to the lines of the door hook and rotates at right anglesv to the direction vof swing of the hook.. The cam is made in thecustomary manner with a contacting surface 22 arranged .eccentric tothe axis of pivoting 23 lof the cam, which axis corresponds substantially with the center of the securing' pin or rivet 26. The cams are 'pivoted' .upon the brackets independently of 'any other fasteningsfthere eing trunnions.24 formed upon the brackets, these being of suitable form and 'size to rotatably accommodate the cams 21 and to form pintles therefor. Afterl the "cams are slipped over these pintles a washer such as 25 is .b-llaid upon the. top ofthe trunnon 24, and the rivet 26 is `driven through this washer and through a suitable hole in the center of the trunnion. It will thusbe seen that the pair of dooi` locks and cams, together with 4the attaching bracket, form a self-contained unit which may be manufactured and assembled and then taken to the car plant where the entire mechanism may be applied `-to the side of the car as a unit without necessitating any co-operative fitting or matching up of parts by the car'buyilder. The rivets 3 and 12 which 'are used for attaching the bracket 11 to the car side do not have any function in holding together the various parts of the locking mechanism, so that the car may be constructed in the ordinary manner and the entire mechanism .applied after having been correctly gau ed and fitted together in a separate ant, especially arranged for this more re ned class of work. This is a feature of construction bodiments are contemplated within the scope',
of the appended claims without departing from the spirit of the invention.
What is claimed is: 1. In a. door arrangement for railway cars, a pair of doors hinged along their remote edges to the car body and arranged t'o swing twoward each other 'into closed positions, a bracket attached to the car side near the free edgesl of the doors, said bracket having a plurality of outstanding lugs with aligned openings therethrough, a door supporting lock for each door, the same being pivote-l upon the said bracket between some of the said lugs, there being a single pivot pin disposed through the sald aligned openings, the said locks being operable upon the said pin. f 2. In al door arrangement for railway cars, the combination with a car havin a side, with an inwardly extending llegge slightly above the lower edge thereof, of a door having a plate portion arranged to be .seated beneath the said ledge andwith a downwardly extending fiange beneath the ledge and inside of the lower edge of the `car side, a bracket secured to the said door and extending outwardly` beneath the lower edge f the car side,'a bracket secured to the outer face of the carside, and a door supporting member operatively hinged upon the last mentioned bracket and arranged to be swung transversely of the car side into position beneath the said door bracket, the pivot point of the said supporting member being above the lines of the door and the door` supporting face thereof being beneath the lower edge of the car side.
3. Ifn `a door arrangement for railway cars, the combination with a car having a side and a floor, of a .door hinged in the Hoor, la bracketsecured to the side of the car, a door supporting member hinged upon the bracket and arranged to swing transversely of the car side, and a locking member for the same pivoted upon the said bracket and arranged to be rotated transversely, of the plane of operation of 'the said supporting member.
4. In a door arrangement for railway car-contacting faceV adapted to accommo\ ears, the combination with a car having a sidey and a floor, of ya door hinged in the floor, a bracket secured to the side of the car, a door supporting member hinged upon the bracket and arranged to swing transversely of the car side, and a locking member for the same pivoted upon g the said bracket and arranged to be rotated in a plane at an acute angle with the plane of' the car side.
5. A door device for railway cars with hinged doors, including a bracket lying` against and affixed'to the side of the car near an edge of the door, said bracket having a door-locking member pivoted thereupon, a pin adapted to retain the door-locking member in pivotal relationship with the bracket, said bracket having a recess in its date the head of the said pin.
6. A door device for railway cars with hinged doors, including a bracket having a base Yportion lying against the side of the car, means for securing the bracket to the car, the same passing through the base of the bracket and the side plate of the car, a door-locking member pivoted u on the bracket, a pin adapted to retain t e doorlocking member in pivotal relationship withv the bracket, the head thereof lying between the'base of the bracket and the car side.
7. A door device for railway cars with hinged doors, including a bracket having a base portion lyingagainst theside of the car, means for securing the bracket to the car, the same passing through the base of the bracket and the side plate of the car, a door-locking member pivoted upon the bracket, a pin adapted to retain the doorlocking member in pivotal relationship with the bracket, the said pin passing through the base of the bracket but not through the car side plate.

In a door arrangement for railway cars, a-door hinged to the car floor, the same having a stiffening flange formed along one of its edges, said flange being turned downward, away from the car floor, a bracket affixed to the door and extending outwardly therefrom beneath the said stiffening flange, and a door-supporting member lpivoted upon the side of the car and arranged for supporting engagement with the said bracket.
9. In a door arrangement for railway cars,
a door hinged to the car floor, the same having a stiffening flange formed along one of its edges, said flange being turned downward, away from the car floor, a bracket affixed to the door and extending outwardly therefrom beneath the said stiffening flange,
and a door-supporting member pivoted upon the side of the car and arranged for supporting engagement with the said bracket, 4the same having the supporting ledge thereof disposed mediate its length and having the portion' below the said ledge formed as an approach plane of a character to cause swinging of the supporting member away from the said bracket upon contact of the bracket therewith when the door is raised.
