Patented Oct. 24, 1922.
HARRY B. GOLDSTEIN, OF ST. PAUL, MINNESOTA.
FORM FOR HAT CROWNS.
Application filed April as, 1920.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. GoLDsTnIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Paul, in the county of Ramsey and State of Minnesota, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Forms for Hat Crowns, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to hat forming crowns, which are used for the purpose of pressing or re-shaping old or new hats made of hair braid, velvet, maline, lace or any other suitable material out of which a hat is made.
The primary object is the production of a crown of the character stated, which can be used with greater efiiciency in the mai1ufacture and repairing of hat crowns. A further object is to provide a metallic non-corrodable crown, which presents no crevices or joints in which dust, glue and other material can lodge and which will stand changes of temperature and can be washed and kept clean without depreciation and staining the material out of which the hat crowns are made.
In the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, Fig. 1 is a perspective view of my improved hat forming crown, and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of my invention showing a piece of flexible material stretched on the forming crown out of which the crown of a hat is to be made.
In the drawing, A indicates improved hat forming crown, which is preferably made out of thin rust proof solid metal. molded or formed into the shape it is desired to make crowns of hats. This forming crown is made with a thin rigid wall B of substantially even thickness, out of aluminum or other suitable rust proof smooth material, the outer surface of said wall conforming in shape, style and size with the inner surface of the hat crown, which it is desired to mold. The lower edge of the hat forming crown is provided wit-h a series of pin holes C. The material D, such as hair Serial No. 377,199.
braid, velvet, maline, lace or any material out of which the crown of a hat is to be made is stretched over the hat forming crown and fastened by pins E or other suitable means passed through said material and inserted freely through the pin holes, said pins being held in place in said holes by the tension of the material. It is usual to treat the material with moist glue and to place the hat forming crown with said material thereon in a press where it is steamed and subjected to pressure. It is dried by the application of heat in the crown either in or out of the press after which the material is stripped from the hat forming crown in finished shape, which it retains. The crown can be used in a press or without a. press, and can be used efficiently for steaming, pressing, blocking and shaping new or old hat crowns. From time to time the surface of the hat forming crown can be washed or wiped, the smooth non-corrodablemetallic finish permitting such use efiiciently.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent is:
1. A one-piece hat forming crown, comprising a thin and substantially semi-spherical metallic shell having a smooth outer surface ccnforming with the shape of a hat crown desired to be formed, the rim of said shell being formed with a multiplicity of openings for receiving material fastening means selectively applicable thereto.
2, A one-piece hatforming crown, comprising a thin and substantially semi-spherical metallic shell having a smooth outer surface conforming with the shape of a hat crown desired to be formed, the rim of said shell being formed with a multiplicity of openings for freely receiving pins passed through material, on the shell, and held in place within said openings by the tension of said material.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification.
HARRY B. GOLDSTEIN.
