particularly to combination razor and stropplng devices. The principal object of the invention is the provision of an improved simple and eifectiveddevice of this character,-
which is particularly`- adapted for use with thin flexible blades, suoh as the well known blades having cutting edges at both sides, in which the blade is adjusted into shaving position by flexing or clamping its edge or edges over and against a guard or guards.
This is accompllshed by mounting the blade on a movable member, so positioned in relation to the frame as to permit the insertion of a strop between the two, the blade moving from one stroppin position to another when the direction'o stropping is reversed; and providing a member which is readily adjusted into position to hold the movable member stationary and i'lex 'or clamp the edge or edges ofthe blade in shaving position, when the device is to be used for shavinv.
@ther objects of the invention comprise the provision of improved forms of construction` and combinations of parts. all as will be more fully explained hereinafter in the following specification and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring to the drawings, the frame of the device comprises a. member 1 which may be formed of sheet metal pressed into the f orm o f an inverted arch. in transverse section, with its side edges bent outwardly and downwardly, portions of these side edges belng out away to form guards or combs 2, 2. A handle m'ember 3 is secured in any desired manner to the bottom of frame member 1 at the center thereof to extend downwardly therefrom, frame member 1 and handle member 3 having a vertical opening 4 eX- tending therethrough.
The razor blade 5 is su ported on a movable menrber whereby t e blade may be moved from one position to another in stropping the same, to present different edge surfaces to the strop.' In the construction -shown in Figs. 1 to 8 of the drawings frame l is provided at i-ts ends with upwardly turned ears 6, 6, having aligned openings therethrough. These openings preferably take the form of vertical slots 61. The blade supporting member 7 is provided at its ends with downwardly extending lugsl 8 having cylindrical pins 9 extending outwardly therefrom, these pins being rotatively supported in the openings or slots 61 in ears 6 of the frame. Blade supporting member T has a central vertical opening 10 therethrough which is aligned with the opening 4 through the handle member 3 when member 7 is in its vertical position. Member 7 also. in the form of construction shown in the drawings. is provided with vertical openings 11, 11, therethrough, one at each side of the central opening 10. Member 7 is provided with short annular upward extensions .12, 12, surrounding openings 11, integral K with, or secured to, member 7. In the form of construction shown in 'Fig'. 2 member 7 may conveniently be made by a die casting process with extensions 12 and all other projecting parts integral therewith.
When blade 5 is a thin flexible blade of the well known form having cutting edges on opposite sides and three aligned openings through the blade, it may be positioned on member 7 by placing the blade on the member in such manner that upward l bar 13 which is hingedly connected at one end by pin 14 to a lug 15 extending upwardly from the end of member 7. Bar 13 is provided with openings 16, 17, 17, which are adapted to align with openingsv 10, 11, 11, when bar 13 rests in its horizontal, or closed position, in which the upward extensions 12 of member 7 preferably extend into openings 17, 17, of bar- 13.
Bar 13l may be latched in itsu operative position by any suitable means, such as a latch bar 1 8 hin edly connected togthe end of bar 13 opposite rom that at which ivot pin 14 is mounted. When the razor is then moved 1n the opposite direction, as is shown in Fig. 6, member 7 will immediately be swung inthe opposite direction by engagement with the strop, so as to strop the opposite edge of the blade.
When the device is to be used as a razor a top clamping member 22 is mounted in position. In the form of construction illustrated this comprises a'rigid plate arched in its transverse direction, having lugs 23, 23, adapted to enter openings 17 in bar 13, and to pass downwardly through the upward annular extensions 12 of member 7 which are positioned within openings 17 and the openings in the razor blade through which extensions 12 pass. Member 22 is also provided with a downwardly extending centrally located pin 24' which 'is adapted to pass through opening 16 in member 13, the aligned opening 10 in member 7 and the central lopening of the blade, and to enter the opening 4 in frame 1 and handle member 1 The passage of the pin 24 through these aligned openings will immediately have the effect of securing member 7 in its vertical position. Member 22 is then adjusted into position to press theedge portions of the blade against guards 2 in shaving position.

In the preferred form of construction member 25 is permanently mounted within the shell portion 31 of handle member 3. This may be arranged by providing'member 25 with a peripheral bead 32 a short distance above knob 29 and bending the lower edge 33' of shell 31 inwardly beneath bead 32, as is shown in Fig. 1. 4
The form 0fv construction illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 is similar to that previously described, but differs therefrom in that frame member 1 is provided at its .ends with downwardly extendlng lugs 61 having openings therethrough, member 7 having downwardly extending arms or flanges 81 at its ends, pins 34 "extendingl through aligned openings in the lower portions of arms 81 and through lugs 61, to form the pivots for member 7 It 'will be noted that the provision of vertical slots 61 in ears 6, in the construction shown in Figs. 1 to 8 of the drawings, en-
lables pivot pins 9 to rise from the bottom of the slotswhen a strop is inserted, so as to give more clearance for the strop. This enables strops of different thickness-to be used, and also makes the device work better 'f a ,wider swing towards and away from the strop. When the device is used as a razor `Apins 9 will rest rmly on the bottom of slots 61, in which position the edges of the blade may be as close as is desired to the guards, so that knob 29 need only be turned a few turns to flex the blade edges down against the guards.
I consider that my invention is one of broad scope, not limited to the particular forms of construction which have been particularly described, by way of illustration but not of limitation. Stropping devices per se somewhat similar to those described herein 'are known, and means for clamping a blade vin a razor, similar to those described herein, are known; but I believe it to be broadly new to position a blade holder above the guards so that the blade may be stropped in situ, and to provide means for flexing the blade edges into shaving position against the guards. Other features of the invention are also thought to be of considerable scope,
as is indicated by the following claim What I claim is: A,
1. In a safety razor, the combination of a frame with guards at oppositesides thereof, a blade holder movably connected to said frame, in such manner thatpressure applied thereto will tilt the same towards one side or the other, and so as to permit the passage of a strop between the same and said guards, and means for simultaneously pressing the edge portions of a flexible two-edged blade held by said holder against said guards, in shaving position.

In a safety razor, the combination of a frame with guards at opposite sides thereof, a blade holder positioned to hold a blade with its edges unsupported above said guards, a space being provided between the guards and blade edges, and below said holder, for the passage of a strop, and means for flexing the blade-edges down against said guards, in shaving position, and so holding them.
3. In a safety razor, the combination of a frame with guards at opposite sides thereof, a blade holding member pivoted to said frame, so arranged that the edges of a two edged flexible blade will project from the same, above said guards, and positioned to permit the passage of a strop beneath the same and the blade, and above said guards, and means adjustable into position for simultaneously pressing the edge portions of the blade against said guards, in shaving position.
4. In a safety razor, the combination of a frame having a guard at one edge, a bladeholder pivoted to said frame, so arranged .that a flexible blade held thereby Imay be stropped by reciprocating said frame along a strop extended between said blade holder and guard, and means for securing said blade holder in fixed position and flexing the edge portion of a blade held thereby against said guard, in shaving position.
5. -In a safety razor, the combination of a frame having a.v guard and a handle, a holder for a perforated flexible blade, pivoted to said frame, so arranged that a blade held thereby may'be stropped by reciprocating said frame along a strop extended between said blade-holder and guard, said holder having perforations corresponding'tc those of the blade, and a clamping plate having positioning pins adapted to enter perforations in the blade and holder. said plate being adapted to clamp the blade edge in shaving position against the guard.
6. In a safety razor, the combination of a frame with guards at opposite sides thereof, a blade holding member pivoted to said frame, so arranged that the edges of a two edged flexible blade will project from the same, above said guards, and positioned to permit the passage of a strop beneath the same and the blade, and above said guards, a clamping" plate adapted to be positioned above 'the blade and to press the edge portions of the blade against said guards, andv means for drawing said plate down to so press the edge portions of the blade.

In a safety razor, the combination of a frame, bent to provide upwardly extending side edges, and having vertical flanges at its ends, a blade-support tiltably supported by said frame between said edges, said blade holder, for the passage of a strop, said/support and flanges having coacting pins blade-holder and blade being perforated, a clamping plate adapted ,to be positioned above sald bladewith a projection entering aligned perforations in the blade and holder, and means for drawing the plate down to 9. In a safety razor, the combination of a frame bent -to provide upwardly extending side edges, a blade support tiltably supported by said frame between said edges, with its upper, blade supporting surface above the level of said ed es and with a surface adapted to frictional y engage and bend a strop below the level of saidedges, the construction being adapted to permit the passage of a strop over said edges and below said last named surface, and means for removably securing a blade on said upper surface with its opposite cutting edges extending unsupported above said frame side edges.

vsaid bladel support having pivot pins so supported by said frame as to permlt a limited vertical movement to the' same, sa1d "blade support having a bladel supporting surface and vertical slots, and means for removably supporting a blade on the upper surface of said blade support with its opposite edges extending above said frame side edges, said pin and. slot connection permitting said serted over said side edges and under said blade support, and said blade support having a surface adapted to be frictionally engaged by the strop.

In a safety razor, the combination of a frame with guards at; opposite sides thereof, a blade holder positloned to hold a blade with its edges extending above said guards", said blade holderhaving a pin and slot connection with said frame, to provide upper and lower positions therefor, so that a space will be provided between the guards and blade edges, and below said holder, for the passage of a strop, when said blade holder is in its upper position, and means for clamping the blade-edges down against said guards, in shaving position.
