UNITED STATES JOHN YOUNG, OF WELLAND, ONTARIO, CANADA.
ELECTRODE HOLDER FOR ELECTRIC FURNACES.
Application filed April 12, 1920. Serial No. 373,334.
T 0 all whom 2'25 may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN YOUNG, of the town of Welland, in the county of Welland, in the Province of Ontario, Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electrode Holders for Electric Furnaces, of which the following is the holder which can be easily actuated to permit of adjusting or replacing the electrodes.
My invention consists of a hinge block or bracket suitably secured to a supporting arm and insulated therefrom, opposed hollow arms suitably hinged to the a hinge block, means for adjustably securingthe free ends of the said arms together, a water cooled terminal, water cooled means for conducting the current from the water cooled terminal to the opposed arms and means for connecting the interior of one of the arms with the other, all as hereinafter more particularly described and illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Fig. l'represents a plan view of a device constructed according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 3 is an enlarged plan view of the opposed arms and hinge block or bracket.
Like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the different views.
1 is the supporting arm and 2 is the hinge block or bracket suitably secured to the supporting arm 1 but-insulated therefrom. 3
and 4 are the opposed hollow arms suitably hinged to the hinge block 2 by the bolts 5 and 6 respectively. 7 is a pipe connected at one end to the interior of the arm 3 and at the other to the interior of the arm 4. The arms 3 and 4 are provided with sl0tted free ends 8 and 9. 10 is a suitable bolt extending through the slots in the free ends of the arms and provided with a suitable nut 11. This bolt adjustably secures the free ends of the arms 3 and 4 together and clamps the electrode 12 in place in any desired position. If required the bolt 9 may be hollow and suitably connected by pipes 13 and 14 with a water supply in order that such 15 is water 16 and 1" are tubes. re-
spectively connecting the water cooled terminal 15 with the hollow arms 3 and 4 through the unions 18 and 1 9. 20 are insulating bushings inserted into orifices in the hinge block 2. by means of which the bolts for securing the hinged block to the supporting arm .1 are insulated from such hinge block. I
The operation of my device is lows The tubes 16 and 17, which are preferably constructed of suitable conducting material, such as copper, convey the current from the terminal 15 to the arms 3 and 4. As the electrode 12 is clamped to such arms the currnt is thus conveyed to this electrode.
The whole device is water cooled, the water circulating through the tube 16 through the union 18 into the hollow arm 3 thence through the pipe 7 into the hollow arm 4 and back'through the union 19 into the pipe 17 and thence back through the terminal.
From the above description it will be seen that. I have devised an electrode holder which will be simple and positive in opera tion and in which the electrode can be readily adjusted orreplaced. Further I have constructed a holder which is water cooled throughout and which will be more efficient than those at present in use, as well as adding materially to the length of life of the same.
Further my device does away with the use of flexible connections which are necessary if the current is brought in at the hinged block, and also entirely eliminates any danger of the hinge pins carrying current.
What I claim as my invention is.
1. In an electrode holder for electric furnaces, the combination with the supporting arm and electrodes, of a, block secured to the supporting arm and insulated therefrom, water cooled means carried by the blOCn for clamping the electrode in position and water cooled means for conveying current to the aforesaid water cooled clamping means and electrodes independently of the aforesaid block.
2. In an electrode holder for electric furnaces, the combination with the supporting arm and electrode, of a hinge block secured to the supporting arm and insulated therein r01- from, opposed water cooled arms hinged to said hinge block and water cooled means for conveying the current to said water cooled arms independently of the aforesaid supporting .arm and block, said water cooled arms supporting said electrode.
3. In an electrode holder for electric turnaces, the combination with the supporting arm and the electrode, of a hinge block secured to the supporting arm and insulated therefrom, opposed hollow arms hinged to the hinge block, the electrode supported be tween said arms, a terminal, pipes, unions connecting the pipes to the respective opposed arms, said pipes connected at their other ends to the terminal, and means for connecting the interiors of the opposed arms together, said pipes constructed of material of high electro conductivity.
4. In an electrode holder for electric furnaces, the combination with the supporting arm and the electrode, of a hinge block secured to the supporting arm andinsulated therefrom, opposed hollow arms hinged to the hinge block, the electrode supported between said arms, a terminal, pipes, unions connecting the pipes to the respective opposed arms, said pipes connected at their other ends to the terminal and being con structed of material of high electro conductivity, and apipe connecting the interior of one arm with the other. I
5 In an electrode holder for electric furnaces, the combination with the supporting arm and the electrode, of a. hinge block secured to the supporting arm and insulated therefrom, opposed hollow arms hinged to the hinge block, the electrode supported between said arms, a terminal, pipes, unions connecting the pipes to the respective opposed arms, said pipes connected at their other ends to the terminal and being constructed of material of high electro conductivity, and a water cooled bolt adjustably securing the free ends of said opposed arms together.
6. In an electrode holder for electric furnaces, an electrode clamp comprising two opposed hollow arms, the electrode being supported between such arms, an electric terterminal, pipes constructed of material of high electro conductivity, each connected at one end to the terminal, and at the other to the corresponding hollow arm, means for circulating water through one pipe, through the arms and back through the other pipe, said pipes conducting the current to the elec trode through such arms.
