FOOT REST.
Application filed September 28, 1921. Serial No. 593,887.
T 0 all whom it may ounce m foot of a person while a shoe is being polished.
The primary object ofmy invention is to provide a foot rest or support which is adapted to be swung out of the way of the patron when the polishing of the shoes of the latter has been completed to permit the person to conveniently and safely move out of the way of such rest or support and thus prevent accidental tearing of the clothing and also prevent bodily injury.
A further object of the invention is to provide a foot rest or support of the char acter described which shall be of extremely simple and inexpensive construction and which can be easily and quickly operated when it is desired to swing the rest out of the way of a person when in the act of leaving the stand or obtaining access thereto.
The invention consists in the novel construction, arrangement and combination of parts substantially as hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanyin drawings and pointed out in the appende claims.
In the drawings- Fig. 1 is a side elevation of my foot-rest or support in raised position.
Fig. 2 is a view, partly in elevation and. partly in section, of the device as seen in Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the device as seen in Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a top plan view showing the device swung down out of the way.
I will now describe my device in detail.
1 indicates a portion of an elevated stand or platform upon which my device is adapted to be mounted. Said device comprises a base 2 adapted to be rigidly secured in any suitable manner to the stand, as by means of a bolt 3 projecting through an aperture 1 in the base and threaded to receive a nut 5. The base is provided with cheeks or abutments 6 and 7, each of which is provided with a squared recess 8, the recess in abutment 6 being upon the inner face of the latter and the recess in abutment 7 being upon the outer face thereof.
9 indicates a foot-supporting member, the portion 10 whereof is adapted to directly receive and support the shoe while the sameis being polished. The member 9 also comprises a depending portion-11 carrying the portion 10, said portion 11 being of any suitable construction or configuration but embodying essentially two legs 12, 13, the lower ends of which are shaped to snugly yet removably fit within the recesses, said lower ends of the legs being adapted to be moved laterally out of the recesses, in the manner and for the purpose hereinafter set forth.
The height of the portion 11 may be varied but it should be of such height that when in a vertical position the, foot-receiving portion 10 will be at such a height above the stand as to make it convenient for the person to rest his foot upon said portion 10.
The member 9 is adapted to have a pivotal connection with the base 2 and this result may be obtained in any suitable manner. I have shown a means for pivotally mounting the member 9, comprising lugs 14,15, projecting laterally from the lower ends of the legs 12, 18. The lug 14C pro'ects loosely within an aperture 16 in the ase while the lug 15 projects loosely within an aperture 17 1n the base, said lug 15 being of suflicient length to project somewhat beyond the outer face of the abutment 6.
18 indicates a coiled spring, one end of which encircles 2. lug 19 projecting from the inner face of the abutment 7 and bearing against the latter, while the opposite end of the spring encircles a lug 20 on the inner face of leg 12 and bears against the latter.
The projecting portion of the lug 15 constitutes a means for pressing the member 9 laterally to cause the lower ends of the legs to move out of the recesses. WVhen this has occurred the member 9 may be swung down into a horizontal position so as to be out of the way of a person stepping onto or off of the stand.
When it is desired to use the member 9 to support the foot, it may be swung upwardly until the lower ends of the legs register with the recesses 8, when the spring 18 will shift the member 9 laterally to cause the lower ends of the legs to spring into said recesses,
said spring serving to prevent accidental lateral movement of member 9 which might release the legs, and by reason of the squared recesses and lower ends of the legs the memher 9 will be held firmly in its vertical position while in use.
The lugs i l and 15 constitute pivots for the member 9 in its swinging movements, said lugs being of suflicient length to remain within the apertures of the abutments alter the legs of member 9 have been moved out of engagement'with the recesses.
What I c aim and desire to secure by e tei's Patent is:
i In a device of the character described, the combination with a base, of a foohsupporting-member having a pivotal connec-- non 'withthe base, means ror holdmg said member in upright-position, and means for yieldingly in aintaining said'member' in engagement with said holding means. said foot-supporting member being shiftable laterally to i'ree it from its holding means and permit it to be swung downwardly.
In a device the character described, the combination with a base having abut ments provided each with a recess, of a foots'up'poi'ting member having legs pivotally connected with thebase, the lower endsof said legsbeing adapted to lit within the said recesses when said member is in upright position, said member being shit-table laterto release the legs from the recesses and permit it to be swung downwardly.
3. In a device or the character described,
the combination with a base having abutments, one of said abutments havlng a recess in its inner face and the other abutment having a recess in its outer face, of a foot-supporting member having legs pivotally connected with the base, the lower ends of the legs being adapted to fit within the said recesses when said member is in upright position, and means for yieldingly maintaining the legs of:said-memberwithin said recesses.
In a device of the character described, the combination with a base having abut ments provided each with a recess, of a footsupporting member havin legs pivotally connected "with the'base, the lower ends of said legs recesses when said member is in upright position, said member being shiftable laterally to release the legs from the recesses, and aspr'ing hearing at one end upon one of the legs and at the other end upon one of the abutn'ients and operating to yieldingly hold 'the'lower ends of the legs within the recesses the said recesses.
ln'testimony-whereof I aflix my signature.
lMHlRGARET C. MONTVIELE.
oeing adapted to fit within the said.
