J. n. ADAMS.
SEAT FOR PIT FURNACE COVERS.
AFPLICATION FILED OCT. 28,1920- Patented Oct. 24,1922.

SEAT FOR PIT-FURNACE COVERS.
Application filed October 28, 1920. Serial No. 420,264.
the following to be a full, clear, and exact.
description thereof. I
My invention relates to a seat for pitfurnace covers.
In soaking-pit furnaces as employed in steel plants, covers are employed for the openings in said furnaces, which covers are mounted at the outer end of frames mounted on wheels so that the covers may be withdrawn in a horizontal plane or advanced in position to cover the furnace opening. As heretofore constructed the seats around the opening in the furnace upon which the outer rims of the cover rest consisted of refractory bricks exposed on their outer faces to the heat of the furnace. In the withdrawal of the covers while resting on such seats, as the cover moves in contact therewith it tends to wear. off the seat and especially the sharp corners of the same, so that gradually the seat wears off at an angle and to such an extent that a crack is left between the outer rim of the cover and the seat which permitsof the escape of the heat and consequently lowers the temperature, in the soaking-pit. I
The object of my invention is to provide a seat for the covers of pit-furnaces of this character in which the brick is protected againstthis wearing and cutting action, and a full seat is always provided for the cover,
' thereby preventing the escape of the heat as heretofore.
To these ends my invention comprises the novel features hereinafter set forth and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing Fig. 1 is a sectional view of a. portion of a soaking pit furnace showing my invention applied thereto, and Fig. 2 is a plan View of my improved seat; and Flg. 3 is a sectional view of a portion of the seat taken on the line 33, Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawing the numeral 2 designates a soaking pit-furnace of any suitable construction having an opening 3. Formed around the opening 3 in the brick work a of the furnace is the ledge 5 on which my improved seat 6 rests.
In the preferred form, my improved seat consists of the rectangular frame 7 composed of inner and outer walls 8 and 9, and contained within said frame, between said walls, are the bricks 10 of suitable refractory material. The lower layer of bricks is laid flat and the upper layer on edges thereon.
Instead of setting the bricks in mortar in the frame 7 I prefer to. form a mold for the frame in the ordinary manner in sand, and set the bricks therein at a suitable distance apart, whereupon the molten iron or steel to compose the frame 7 is poured into the mold and the metal not only forms the walls of said frame, but passes into the spaces between the bricks so that the bricks and metal form a practically integral structure thereby increasing the strength as well as the life of such frame.
The frame, when so formed, is lowered by the lugs 11 on to the ledge 6, fitting snugly therein.
The cover 12 which may be of any suitable construction but preferably made in accordance with the method set forth and described bv me in an application filed by me on the 10th day of July, 1920, Serial No. 395,301, in which said cover, like my improved seat, has the brick lining cast integral with the metal cover itself. The cover is connected to the frame 13, said frame being mounted on wheels which travel on a suitable track, and mechanism is provided for advancing and withdrawing the frame, the cover 12 sliding on the seat 7 in withdrawing and advancing the same into position.
'By my improved seat I prevent the wearing away of the brick adjacent to the opening by the sliding of the heavy cover back and forth thereon due to the fact that the metal frame protects the bricks contained therein and prevents the wearing of the same, and furthermore the bricks are not exposed directly to the action of the heat as before.
What I claim is:
1. A seat for pit-furnace covers adapted to rest on the walls of the furnace, comprising a metal frame with bricks interposedbe- In testimony whereof, I, the said J AMES tweenlX the inner endfouter Walls of same. D. ADAMS, have hereunto set my hand.
2. seat for piturnace covers comprisw ing a metal frame having an inner andbnter JAMbb A Wall and bricks interposed between said Witnesses": Walls, the metal forming the frame also fill- ROBT. D. TOTTEN, ing the spaces between seid bricks. JToHfN
