for pump strainers, the principal Vobject of thepinvention being to provide means tor` automatically scraping the exterior ot the strainer every time the pump is used.
Another object of the invention is to provide a cylinder formed of aA plurality ot scraping blades which surround the strainer with means for attaching the cylinder to the suction valve ins'uch a manner 'that when the val ve is raised. the cylinder will be partly rotated to cause the blades to pass over the perforated' walls of the strainer 't scrape foreign matter therefrom. g Another object of the invention is to provide spring means for holding the valve in closed position and for returning the scraper cylinder to its normal position, thus the scraper cylinder will be given a partial rotation in one direction when the valve is raised and will be rotated back to its normal position by the spring means while the.
valve is being lowered. r
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangen'ient'of the several parts, to be hereinafter t'ully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in vthe appended claims.
ln describing my invention in detail, reiterence drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the sev-v eral views, and 1n which l Figure l is a sideV view showing the strainer end of the pump with my invention l applied thereto.

inder which is attached to fthis end, this cylinder being provided with rows of perforations as shown at 1J: indicates the `:toot valve which is placed in theV pipe l immediabove the strainer and the stem oi This stemis made in the form of an Archi medean screw, the rend i ot `which passes through clearance hole made in the bottom of tliestrainer.` lThe valve is provided with wings 6 which engage the longitudinally extending guides. 7- tor preventing turning movement of the valve while permitting it to be moved vertically under the action of the pump.
The scraper cylinder S is termed ot a hub 9 having an opening therein snugly engaging the screw so that the hub will be caused to rotate by the screw passing' through it` and the radiating arms oi" blades l() which have rightangularly extending parts l1 which engage the sides of the inder, the arms or blades 10 engaging the bottom of the strainer. A coiled spring 12 is placed around the lower end of the screw and said spring bears against the hub 9 and a washer 13 is held on the screw by the nut la which engages the screw threaded end oli-said screw. This spring will hold the valve upon its seat and when said valve is raised by the suction of the pump the stem and as this stem passes will also be raised through the huh it will cause the scraper thus causing strainer cylcylinder to be partly rotated the blades to scrape the 'walls ot' the strainer cylinder' and when the suction stroke ot the pumpis completed the spring will return the parts to normal position so that the lscraper cylinder is rotated in an opposite spaces between the blades are vertically ar-v ranged the matter scraped off the strainer by the 4blades will drop by gravity from said spaces.
The invention is adaptedto be used on all `forms of reciprocating pumps for handling dirty fluids which are liable to choke an ordinary strainer, such as bllge and donkey pumps aboard ships, and those used in coal mines, factories and the like. This invention will be found extremely advantageous CIK for use on ship pumps as its use will render unnecessary the engineer or his lttenc'lmit divinginto the iithy hilge Water to @lean choked strainers. p It is thought from the 'foregoing' description that the advantages and nove feafein'esf of my invention will be readily apparent.
