' CARL J. HAZELTON', or woncns'rnn; MASSACHUSETTS, lassieivon '10 AMERICAN NARROW FABRIC COMPANY, OF W TIQN or AssAoi usn'rTs.
Ron-swan; MASSACHUSETTS; a conroime nosn-surronrnn'isurron. z
Application filed March 11,
To all whom it mag concern:
citizen of the United States, residing at WVorcester, in the county of lVorcesteraand State of Massachusetts, have 1nvented a new and useful Hose-Supporter Button, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates vto a button (for hose supporters. the invention are to'provide improved and simplified means for attaching ai-rubber col:- let to a base of sheet metal oriother material; to provide the attaching means in such form as to positively prevent the turning of the rubber collet on its axis even after considerable wear; and to provide a fastening device which will be capable of passing through the collet and holding it effectively, and will keep the outer surface of the head of the collet in a smooth uninter rupted form; Additional objects and advantages of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, in which 7 Fig. 1 is a front view of a hose supporter having a button constructed in accordance with this invention;
Fig.2 is a central longitudinal sectional view of the same on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view on the line 33 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central sectional view showing a modified form;
Fig. 5 is a similar view showing another modification, and 1 Fig. 6 is a front view of the latter.
It has'been usual to fasten rubber collets on their bases by means of acentral cylindrical headed rivet passing through the same and riveted over on the back of the supporting plate or base. lVhen these collets are round they sometimes get loose after long wear and are capable of rotating or turning on the rivet as a center. i This is not a serious disadvantage in the case of round collets, but would spoil the efficiency of a collet which was given some other shape in order to improve its function of holding the top of a stocking and this invention is shown as applied to a button of that type.
For the purposeof illustration I have shown the invention as applied to a button The principal objects of 1922. Serial No. 543,061."
p I oblonghead in which thelongerv Be it known that I, CARL J; HAZELTON, a
to the length. of the (shown a flat metal base plate 10 over which I the narrow fabricll passes-and to-whic'h'it is attached in any usual way. On this plate is carri edya' collet 12 of soft" rubber; Thisv zontal' or ftran'sverse to the length of the shown as smaller, in diameter than the head collet has an oblong head with its axishoriso that ithewire loop 14 will pass under the projecting surfaces of the head and hold the fabric of the stocking to the collet;
For the purpose of fastening this collet in position I provide a staple like member 16 made of a piece of flat wire preferably, and having a long head 17 doubled under at both ends to form ends 18 or double thickness and having its two 1 ends bent downwardly therefrom to form'two fastening prongs 19. These are both passed through corresponding holes in the base plate and riveted over on the back. This staple, of course, passes through two perforations through the collet which are spaced apart and between which there is a solid body 20 of rubber integrally united with the rest of the collet. The head of the staple is located flush with the head of the collet so i as to form a complete unitary structure and leave the visible 'surfa'ceof this head in a substantially smooth condition without. any
material indentation; gThe staple is made always be maintained as long as thesame is in use.
In the form shown in Fig. 4 the same principles are maintained except that there are two separate rivets 21 instead of one, and
the two heads 220 f the rivets are formed in such a way as to make,as nearly as possible, a continuous metal plate on the top of the collet. p p
In the last two figures I have shown a similar construction in which there is a single rivet passing through the collet having a flat head 26 shaped and looatecl 'similar to the others mentioned above, and provided, with a flat shank ,27 extending down. to the base late andllp'assing. through similar shaped iole therein and riveted overlon the back. The shape of the 'collet is somewhat changedin this form,'Which:Will-show' that the invention is not limited to theform shown in the first three figures; i In each of these forms the metallic'staple or staples can be enameled as-above .de- *scribediand' the extreme-ends ofthe staple shanks are shouldered for an obviousi pun pose. .Difierent shapes of thecollets are shown merely to indicateythe fact that the invention is applicable'ffin different forms Although I -have illustrated andd'esc'ribed three forms of; the invention 'I" am awar of theffact that otherlmodifioations can made therein by any person skilled in the art without departing fromi the scope of the invention as expressed'in theclaimsj There fore, I do "not. .vvish to bellmited' toallthe details of construction herein shown and deseribedybut. what I do claim is 1. 1As an article vof manufacture a hose 7 supporter button comprising an oblong rub ber .collet, andja staple,..for secu ing in position, 'said's'taple havinga flat head e tending longitudinally of 'thebuitto'n at its "outer surface andfflush therewith, and two legs spaced apart extending through the rub- I' r a her to the rear thereof.
2. Asian article-notsmanufacture, a hose support-er'button comprising a rubber col- 1et, and a staple' for' securing it in' position, i
said Sta PlQh&V1Ilg a:flat head extending longitudinally of the button at its outer lo surface, and; tvvo legs spaced: apart extend v ing through-the rubber to the rearthereof the staple' beingmade of flat Wire and being -bent inwardly underthe ends of the head to 'form'aidouble thickness and thelegs pro jecting down? from the/inner ends of the
