To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that EDWARD JOHN WAY a' British subject, residing at 134 Cullinan Building, Simmonds Street Johannesburg, Transvaal, Province of the 2Union of South frica, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reels for Cinematograph Film and the like, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has reference to reels for holding cinematograph film and the like, the object of the invention being the provision of a simple and effective form of reel constructed to be disassembledto remove the film coil therefrom or to place it in position, having a collapsible core and an automatically releasing grip for the end of the film.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which Fig. I is a side View of the reel with the front cheek removed and the core collapsed.
Fig. II is a section through A-A Fig. III, showing the core expanded.
Fig. III is a cross section through B-B Fig. II, and
Fig. IV shows the inner face of the front cheek.
' 1 indicates the front cheek and 2 the back cheek of the reel. The core consists of several segments 3 of a disc, each segment being slotted at 4 to slide on pins 5 fixed to the cheek 2. Centrally the core is formed with a conical bore 6, and centrally on the inner face of the front cheek I1 is fixed a similar cone 7 At each side of the cone project wings 8 and the spaces 9 between the core segments are wide enough to permit said wings 8 to pass between them. The edges 10 of the wings are bevelled to facilitate their entrance into said spaces 9.
The gripping device for the film end consists of a spring 11 fixed in a shallow recess 12 in one of the segments 3 and overlapping a similar recess 13 in the next segment.

The spring l1 is so shaped that when the core is thus expanded said spring presses on the surface of the recess 13. The film is clipped to the reel by lifting the spring 11 with the finger, inserting the film end beneath it and allowin the spring to close on said end. After the li m is wound, the clip 15 is released and the front cheek 1 is withdrawn.

1. A reel for cinematograph film and the like consisting of two cheeks, core segments attached to one cheek to slide radially thereof, a cone on the other cheek to enter and expand said segments, and wings on the cone to enter the spaces between the segments.
2. A reel for cinematograph film and the like consisting of two cheeks, core segments attached to one cheek to slide radially thereof, a spring secured at one end to one such core segment, the other end of bein free and adapted when the core is expan ed to overlap and press on the next core segment, whereby the end of a film may be heli between said free end of the spring and sai other cheek for expanding the core.
