Description

W. SULE.
` Pluws.l No. 143,263, l PuatentedSeptemb'er30,l873.
' WTNESSES.
INVENTOR UNITED STATES PATENT OFFIGEo SAMUEL W. SOULE, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
IMPROVEMENT IN PLows.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 143,263, dated September 30, 1873; application filed September 25, 1872.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. SOULE, of the city, county, and State of New York, have invented, made, and applied to use certain Improvements in the Construction of Blows; and that the following is a full, clear, and correct description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing makin gpart of this specication, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, in which- Figure l is a side elevation of my improved plow. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the secondary mold-board and share being elevated. Fig. 3 is an end View of the plow.
v-In the drawing, like parts of the invention are pointed out by the same' letters of reference.
The nature of my invention consists in certain improvements in the construction of plows, as more fully hereinafter explained.
To'enable those skilled in the arts to make and use my invention, I will describe the same.
A shows the beam of the plow, which is attached to the frame B by means of the bolts c e, B is the frame, which is attached to the mold-board C and land-side D. b are the handles for guiding the plow, connected to the beam A by the bolt d and strip of metal e. D is the landside of the plow, attached to the mold-board and share C, and to the frame B by the braces E and F. C shows a permanent mold-board and share, attached to the'landside D and to the frame B. C shows a secondary mold-board and share, attached to the frame B by a hinge, f, and supported in position when in use by the pin g, and provided with a lever, h, by whichthis secondary moldboard can be raised, when desired. K shows the clevis for attaching the team to the plow. Such being the construction, the operation is as follows:
The team is attached to the clevis, and the plow is guided by the handles. In commencing a new land, the mold-board Gf is elevated by the operators pullingthe lever h, after which the mold-board is dropped, and two regular furrows are turned, one by each share.
In plowing, should any Aobstruction be met with, the secondary mold-board and share can be raised up from it by the lever h, while the other furrow will be formed by the stationary share. In case only one furrow be desired, the secondary mold-board and share can be Vremovedfrom the frame B.
The handles can be adjusted in height to suit the convenience of the plowman by bending' the strip of metal e, to which they are attached.
The improvement consists in the ability to4 raise the mold-board and share, which will be found advantageous in allowing any stones or obstructions to be avoided without danger to the plow, while by its employment two furrows may be plowed, if desired; and, finally,
the attachment of the mold-board and share lowered, substantially as and for the purposes set forth.
SAM UEL W. SOULE. In presence of- A. SIDNEY DoANn, JOHN H. STrrT.
