JOHN T. PRATT, OF TIPTONVILLE, TENNESSEE- terrine encon,

To alt wle-om it may conce/rfa."
Be it known that I, JOHN T. .Pn-ATT, a.
' citizen of the `Unite l"f3tates, residing at Tiptonville, in the county 'of Lake'andfState of Tennessee, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in rliling Blocks; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description ofi the inn vent-ion, such as will enable otlierslskilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
lIhe invention relates to a tile or finishing block for walls.
An important object is to provide an article of this class which may have a metallic or equivalent backing type adapted to be fastened by nails or otherwise to a wall and which has a facing` of vplastic or molded material secured thereto.
Another object is to provide a novel, effective, cooperating and vinterlocking connection between the backing plate and the facing material of the particular construction hereinafter described.
Additional objects are to provide a novel means whereby the tile may interlock with each other and conceal their means of fastening; one in which heat necessary to the junction of the facing and backing may be substantially equally applied to both sides of the tile, and to provide a tile of the particular construction shown.
In accompanying drawings, one practical embodiment is illustrated, and therein :m4
Figure 1 is a front elvation of a tile constructed in accordance with my invention;
Figure 2 is a horizontal sectional' view through a plurality of the tile and a wall to which they are fastened; and
Figure 3 is a -transverse sectional view through a portion of Figure 2.
Referring specially to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate like or similar parts throughout'the views,
' a backing or securing plate flis provided which is preferably ofthinsheet metal, such tin. At 5, the facing of the tile is shown.`
lt will be noted that at one end and one side edge of the facing 5, the backing 4rprojects beyond the same so as to form attaching flanges 6 and 7, through which nails 8 may be driven in order to secure the tile to a wall, conventionally suggested, at 9. The end wall and the side wall of the facing 5 adjacent to the attaching flanges r6 and 7, are beveled inwardly as at 10 s o that the outer wall of the facing 5 will. project beyond tbc inner wall of saidv facing` and overy said attaching flanges. The other side'e'dgew'all andvendlof the facingarebeveledinthe opposite direction at`115 towall 9, so that the4 rear walloff the facing will' project eyonc'l the" front wall' of tliefacing.'
It willbe seen that theV tiles are fastened, against a'wall by meansiofth nails 8. The adjacent walls at the longitudinal and end edges of the tile interlock, concealing the flanges 6 and 7 and attaching nails 8, by reason of beveling such walls at 10 and 11.
Facing 5 may be of any suitable material and in carrying out the invention, I may make the same of plastic or molded material. In order to form an interlocking connection between the facing and the plate 1, the backing at relatively close intervals is struck inwardly to provide relatively rough tubes or spurs 12 which embed in the backing 5 before hardening. Incidental to the provision of the spurs 12, openings 13 will be provided through the plate which are wider as at 14, through the manufacturing process fof the plate. Due to this construction, the
molded or plastic material, before hardening, enters the openings 13 and spreads into the larger portion 14, so as to provide in effeet, fastening heads on the plastic material or facing 5 as at 15, which are impassible through the openings 13 in adirection to release the `facing` 5.
When the tile is subjected to heat, incidental to molding or pressing the facing 5 from glass or vitreous material, the construction will enable the heat tobe substantially equally applied to both sides of the ti e.
Changes may be made within the spirit and scope ofthe invention as defined by appended claims.
v`What is claimed is:-
1. A tile having a backing substantiallyl rectangular in shape, said backing having. one side and one end wall beveled, said backing having the other side and end wall beveled opposite to the side and end wall rst mentioned, and attaching flanges secured to and projecting beyond the backing at one side and one end thereof.
2. A tile having a backing plate, a facing, a projection extendingv from the backing plate embedded in the facing, said projeci tion having an opening therethrough lled with the material of the backing, and said epening'l'iei `j'w`ifle11c-nfl ut a portion thereof Yfor the pnrpoee specified. y
3. A tile havii'lg a hacking plate7 a ilfaeinogl a lasteling projection extending 'from the backiiig'plate embedded. in the facing", said projection haring an opening therethrough filled. with the materialv o'' ythe hacking, and said opening having an enlarged portion 'l of the attaching :face oit the backing 'for the l 0 purpose specified. i I
il. A.. tile having a hacking plate pro- 'Videdwith a plurality o1 j nrojeetions7 a atacing infwhieh said projections are embedded, said projections vhaving openings. therethrough lilled with the material of the hacking, and said plate and material in the openings beingexposed invk oneside o' the tile enabling heat to be applied to the hack face of thefacingl to l the saine degree substantially as to the front face.
A. vtile having a facing, an attaching flange projecting beyond one side and one end Wall thereof, the said side and end Walls;
being deeeted so that their inner edges are 'farther Yfrom the adjacent marginal edges of the llange than their outer edges, and the
