LICENSE TAG EGR VEHICLES.
Application led April 13, 1922. Serial No. 552,249.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, WILMER A.`RE1N, a citizen of the United States, residing at town of Pleasant Springs, in the county of Dane and State of Wisconsin, have invented a.
new and useful License rlag for Vehicles, of which the following is a specification,
This invention relates to license tags for vehicles and more particularly to those in Whlch a permanent number is used and having a year and state -carrying element detachably connected therewith.
The object of the invention is to provide a license tag plate of this character the year carrying element of which has means to prevent its being used except in connection with the license for which it was designed.
Another object is to provide a tag of this character on which al permanent license number is stamped, the same registration number being used in connection with each vehicle during the entire life of the vehicle, and which carries a detachable plate bearing the year number, the letter of the State in which .the license is registered and the license number which corresponds with the permanent number on the tag plate proper.
Another object is to so construct a year carrying plate that it will indicate at a glance whether or not the vehicle owner has renewed his license.
'W ith the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides* in the comb-ination and arrangement 0f parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed Iay be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 represents a front elevation of the tag constructed in accordance with this inventlon. p
Fig. 2 is a detail longitudinal section taken on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1, and
Fig. 3 is a transverse section taken on the line 3 3 of Fig. 1.
In the embodiment illustrated a license tag plate 1 is shown such as is ordinarilyA used for motor vehicles having pressed or stamped out thereon the license number shown at 2. The plate 1 carries at one end thereof a detachable year plate 10 which is vof a length preferably corresponding tothe width of plate l and which'is designed to be slidably mounted in the seat formed on the end of plate 1 by flanges 3 and 4 bent inwardly at the end and one side edge respectively ofsaid plate 1 and which cooperate with a tongue- 5 struck out of plate l at a point spaced from the end ange 3 a distance corresponding to the width of plate 10 and which is bent to form a guide so that the plate l0 may be slipped into the seat transversely of pla-te l and which when so inserted will be retained in position by binding engagement of the flanges and tongue and also by securing bolts which pass through openings 11 and 12 in the corners of plate 10 and through registering openin s such as those shown at 6 in plate 1.
he plate 10 is designed as a license renewal plate one of which is issued each year and Acarries on its face the year number here shown at 13J and a letter 14 which indicates the State in which the license Was granted. 0n this plate 10 between the letter 14 and the year. number 13 is positioned the license number l5 which corresponds with the number 2 used on the plate 1. By so forming this renewal plate, it will be rendered theft proof since it can be used legitimately only in connection with the plate 1 bearing the license number corresponding with that on the plate 10.
ln the use of this tag, plate 1 is issued when the vehicle is first registered and the number 2 given thereon constitutes the license number which is used continuously throughout the life of the vehicle thus requiring one registration only of each vehicle. It is of course understood that the renewal tag or plate 10 is issued yearly and is colored dierently each year so as to indicate at a glance whether or not a vehicle owner has renewed his license.
'The use of the single license number on a vehicle during its entire life or during its ownership by a certain party according to the laws of the State would permit such number being retained among the records of each city or town so that all cars in the immediate vicinity may be easily identified, which is desirable in cases of arrest.
Further advantages incident to the issue of the small plate l0 yearly are that a small amount of material only is required for the manufacture of such plate, a saving in freight or express in transporting the plates from the point of manufacture to the point c@ llamame of distribution; and the convenience in ing plate of a sizeto slide between one of changing one renewal plate for another. said flanges and said tongue and to rest on I claim the other flange.
