NAZAIRE LACROTTE,
PROTECTING MASK Application filed February T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that L'NAZAIRE LAoRo'r'rE, engineer, citizen of the Republic of France, residing in Paris, France (and whose postoflice address is 136 Avenue Parmentier), have invented certain new and useful Tmrovements in Protecting Masks for Boxing Tupils; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled inthe art to which. it appertains to make and use the same, reference belng had to the accompanyin drawings, and to letters'or figures of re' erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to a protecting mask with elastic padding constituted by hollow rubber members or pouches and adapted to be secured to the face whereby the wearer is enabled to carry out boxing exercises without receiving any injury whatever from thestrokes, these latter being deadened by the effect of the said padding. The mask according to my invention, which may be used to protect the'entire face or only a portion thereof, is essentially composed of sheets of felt and asheet of leather having secured thereto at the proper places hollow rubber members or pouches which are in is a partial section showing one of the means which may be employed for holding the said hollow pouchesin place. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of a modified form of construction of the mask, and Fig. 6 a sectional view of a hollow pouch with the enclosing padding for the same. Fig. 7 shows a mask comprising only the ear protecting portions.
In the device according to Figs. 1 to 6, the mask comprises two flexible side members 1, 1 for protecting cheeks, nose and ears, a central cut out portion 2 to contain the nose, an elongated aperture 3 for respiration through the mouth; a projecting portion 4: for protecting the lower lip; and a curved portion 5 covering the chin. The whole de:

vice ing sheet constructed of sufliciently thick felt and having secured thereto the hollow rubber pouches which are air inflated and disposed at suitable points for effectually protecting the boxers face. Two of the said pouches are disposed at 7 at each end of the side members 1, 1 and another 8, at the mid-- ,dle part of the said members.
, I The central cut out portion strengthened internally by a metal stiffening member 9 which affords a good protection for the sides of the nose and the upper lip, in combination with the punches 10 disposed at the sides of the said out out portion. Below the elongated aperture '3 is disposed another pouch 11 for protecting the lower lip. The mask is also provided at the lower middle part thereof with an inwardly projecting portion 5 having disposed therein the three pouches 12. These various pouches are secured to their backing by any suitable means, but can be advantageously held in place by two overlapping strips 13 which are sewed at 14 to the felt 6 or to the leather which may be disposed upon the latter. The
entire mask is faced with a textile fabric or.
like flexible material 15. The-maskis held upon the boxerls face by an elastic band 16 bearing upon the forehead and another band 17 also of an elastic character fitting over the top'of the head, in combination with a strap 18 made in two parts and provided with a tongueless buckle and designed to be tightened atthe back of the head.
In thearrangement shown in Figs. 5 and 6, the mask comprises an upper portion for the forehead, 19, which is suitabl padded and contains two rubber pouches 20. This forehead portion is connected to t 1e upper parts of two flaps 21, 21 protecting the cars,
is constituted by a foundation or back- 2 may be which are likewise padded and each providv ed with a rubber pouch 22 at the central part thereof. The lower part of each of the flaps 21 is secured to a forwardly projecting portion 23'for protecting the upper and the nose against the blows. The padding of each of the portions 23 contains a rubber pouch 24.
The space formed between the two portions 23 serves to contain the nose, and the two edges of the said portions are connected by a forwardly situated strip of textile fabric 26 which is secured to the forehead portion 19 by a narrow strip of fabric 25. The lower part of the said nose aperture is means of a set of elastic bands 27 hearing provided with a narrow strip of textile fabric which is placed over the upper lip. This mash ISfittBCl upon the face by upon the top of the head and having secured thereto another band QS-fitting over the back of the head, in combination with the strips 29 secured to the bottomof the flaps ".21 and adapted to be tied under the chin.
T he above described mask' may as shown in Fig. 5 protecting the top of the head, as well as a lower member 31 for protecting thechin.
The n'ieinbers 30 and 31 may beprovided to this effect with one or two rubber pouches -30, 31 respectively as indicated in dotted lines. v I
The padding of the mask may be constructed advantageously as shown in Fig. 6.
A felt member 6 disposed adjacent the inside of the mask has sewed-thereto a leather sheet 32 to which is secured the rubber pouch by means of overlapping bands 18 as 'inthe arrangement Fig. and the said pouch is surrounded by felt bands 33, covered by a leather sheet 34 which is in contact with the outer side of the pouch. This assemblage of leather and felt sheets is held together by stitching, and the whole is enclosed within an inner envelope of textile fabric 35 and i an outer envelope of thin leather 36.
The mask may be constructed in a simpler form as shown in a rear perspective view '7 and in this case it comprises only two padded portions 211* for, protecting the cars,
which are each provided-,With a rubber formed, I declare that what I claim is:
l. A protecting mask for boxing pupils, comprising two padded portions ofhoval shape for protecting the ears, each comprisiing a leather sheet covered with aplurality comprise an arched member 30' Leeann of layers of felt, a hollow rubber pouch disposed upon'the saidleather sheet, a leather sheet covering both the said felt portion and the said, pouch, and an envelope enclosing the entire device; a set of elastic bands fitting .upon the top'of the head; an elastic band applied against the forehead and an other elastice band fitting under the chin.
