To all whom it. may concern:
Be it known that I, H. SMITH, a citizen of the United States residing at Chap aqua, in the county of 'Westchester and gtate of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Railway Cars, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to construct in a railway car specially adapted and designed to transport freight containers which containers are removab tachably secured to the car. 7
A further object of my invention is to provide means whereby the containers may be centered and properly positioned. on the car, and whereby one container may be removed from the car without disturbing the other containers on the car, or in any way reducing the stability of the position of the remaining containers upon the car; and with these and other objects in view my invention consists of the parts and combine tion of parts as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
In the drawing- Figure 1 is a top plan view of the car embodying my invention, said car being broken away and two freight containers mounted on the car.
Figure 2 is a side elevation of the car embodying my invention with two freight containers thereon.
Figure 3 is an end elevation looking at the right hand end of Figure 1.
Figure 4 is an enlarged detail sectional view on line 4-4 of Figure 3 showing the interlocking mechanism positioned near the top of the containers.
The car is composed of a skeleton frame including side sills 1, end sills 2, center sills 3, bolsters 4, and needle beams 5.
Broad flat plates 6 are secured above the top edge of the center sills and smaller plates 7 are secured above the top edges of the bolsters and needle beams, whereby a materially enlarged bearing surface is provided for the containers. The spaces between the side sills, bolsters and needle beams are filled in with reticulated material, preferably expanded metal 8, whereby the danger of the operator falling through the bottom of the car when the car is empty is eliminated.
All side sills of the car are of skeleton form and consist of the band of wall. portion 9 y mounted and desecured to the side sills and supported by and secured to the side stake members 10; sald slde stake members being formed of fiat plate which is strengthened by a corrugatlon 11 extending vertically thereof. An angle iron 12 is secured to the top of the side stakes 10 thereby completing the side and end walls of the car.
Secured .to the inner face of the side wallsof the car are guide and stabilizing elements 13, which are disposed at predetermined intervals throughout the length of the car and are riveted to the side stakes, the band 9 and the angle iron 12.
14 are rests or supports upon which the bottom of the containers rest. These supports are arranged on the sills, needle beams,
etc, as shown in Figure 1.
At each end of the'car I secure on the plate 6 a two way guide and centering post 15, and at intermediate points between the ends of the car I securely position four-Way guide posts 16, which guide and center the adjacent corners of four adjacent containers, the containers being designated by reference numerals 17, which containers are provided with suitable doors 18, which doors, when the containers are loaded on the car, project below the angle iron 12 of the car wall asshown in Figure 2, whereby the door of the container cannot be opened while the container is on the car because the side wall structure of the car functions as an abutment to prevent the opening of the door while the container is on the car.
The containers are each provided with stabilizing members19, which are adapted to function with the stabilizing elements 13 secured to the car, whereby the container is held against shlfting while on the car, the guide posts 15 and 16 co-acting with the stabilizing elements 13 and 19 to prevent shifting of the containers while on the car.
Near the top of each container I secure a female member 20 and a male member 21 of a locking device and similar complementary members to the top of another compartment so that when the compartments are arranged in position on the car, as shown in Figure 1, these locking elements 20 and 21 engage with each other thereby locking the compartments together at the top. These locking elements 20 and 21 are shown on an enlarged scale in Figure 4.
The guide posts 15 and 16 have base flanges, as shown in the drawings while the, posts extend upwardly between the commay be loaded on to and unloaded from the car.
The car frame may include rigidifying means 24, gusset plates 25 and such other rigidifying means as may be desired by the builder.
Changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the scope of the appended claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a railway car, a frame including side sills, bolsters and needle beams, side and end walls, secured to said sills in combination with a series of laden compartments adapted to be mounted upon said car within said side and end walls, co-operating uides on the compartments and side walls a apted to inter-engage when the compartments are placed on the car, four-wa guide posts mounted on the caradapte to receive adj acent corner (portions of four adjacent compartments an two way guide posts at each end of the car adapted to receive corner portions of two adjacent compartments; said side and end walls functioning-as abutments for the containers.
2. In a railway car a frame comprising side sills, end sills, center sills, needle beams and bolsters, end walls and side walls, substantially broad plates secured on top of the center sills, needle beams and bolsters, a reticulated flooring secured to the above elements of the frame, two way' guide posts secured to said floor at each end of the car, four way guide posts secured to said floor n line with the center sills at intermediate laden compartments are adapted to rest, a
two way guide post secured at each end of the car and four way guide posts secured at pre-- determined intervals over the center sills between the ends of the car and guides secured at pro-determined intervalsto the inner face of the side wallsof the car.
4. In a railway car a frame including side sills, center sills, end sills, needle beams and bolsters, a reticulated floor secured to said above elements, substantially wide bearing lates mounted on top of center sills, needle eams and bolsters, supports secured above the end sills, side sills, center sills, needle beams and bolsters upon which laden compartments are adapted to rest, a two way guide post secured at each end of the car and four way guide posts secured at predetermined intervals over the center :sills between the ends of the car, and guides secured at predetermined intervalsto the inner face of the side walls of the car, and a reticulated flooring secured to the said sills and beams; said car being adapted to ive and hold thereon against displacement a series,of independently movable compartments adapted to hold lading.
