To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Hurcrr INS, a citizen of theUnited States, residing at Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State ofNew York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ignition Timers; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art towhich'it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to the timing devices in electric ignition-apparatus for engines. In such apparatus it is common to employ a circuit-controller having a cam, or other rotary member, which is driven by connection with themechanism of the engine, and which cooperates with other members mounted in a normally stationary position within a heador casing. The timing of the ignition may be manually adjusted, in such an arrangment, by a partial rotation of the casing or head about the axis ofrotation of the cam or rotary-member of the circuit-controller, and it is customary to provide stops of some sort for limiting such partial rotation so as to prevent the time of ignition from either being too far advanced or too far retarded.
The object of the present invention is to provide an ignition-timer, of the type in question, with simple and effective means for limting the rotative adjustment as aforesaid, such means being preferably so formed that they may be readily adjusted to various positions according to the particular location and manner in which the ignitiontimer is to be applied and used.
To the foregoing end it is proposed to interpose, between the adjustable head and the support upon which it is mounted, a stop-member, preferably of annular form, and to connect the stop-member with the head and with the support, respectively, by means of cooperating recesses and abutments so arranged as to permit the necessary limited amount of relative rotation between the members of the timer. In the most complete embodiment of the invention the stop-member and one or another of the members with which it cooperates is pro vided with a series of such abutments of recesses adapted for alternative engagement with the corresponding parts, and the stop-member is conveniently mounted and provided with secured in place by being arranged tosurround the stem of the timer-head and rest upon the bearing-member or support in which this stem turns. 1

Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the stop-member alone, on a slightly larger scale than the other figures. j The invention is illustrated as employed n connection with an ignition-timer having the usual head 5 within which the circuit controller is located. This head is mounted upon a stem 6 which forms the bearing for the shaft 7 by which the circuit-controller is actuated. This shaft is driven through gears 8, connected in any ordinary or suitable manner with the mechanism of the engine with which the timer is used.
The gears are inclosed in a. housing 9, which is providedwith an upwardly projecting sleeve 10. This sleeve constitutes the support or bearing, for the head 5 and the stem 6, thelatter being arranged to turn freely in the sleeve and being held therein by'means of a screw 11 which engages an annular groove in the stem. The head 5 is an arm 12 by which it may be turned to "ary the time ofignition, and this arm is, provided with a dependinglug 13 adapted to cooperate with stops to limit the adjusting movement of the casing.
The parts so far described are or may be of ord nary form, and the present invenvtion resides particularly in the form and arrangement of a stop-member which is interposed between and connected with the head and the support. This stop-member is shown as formed of sheet-metal and comprises a flat annular portion or ring 14, provided at its outer edge with a lateral projection on which are two upstanding stop-lugs 15. The ring 14 is arranged to surround the stem 6 and rest upon the upper end of the sleeve 10, and it is revented from rotating upon the sleeve by means of a dowelpin 16, which is fixed in the sleeve and en gages one or another of a series of recesses or perforations 17 in the ring.
