Application filed January 30, 1922. Serial No. 532,542.
T 0 aZZ whom it may concern Be it known that I, HENRY Soi-rLU'rz, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburgh. in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Socket renches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in socket wrenches more particularly upon the construction of wrench disclosed in Letters Patent No. 1,395,656, granted me Nov. 1, 1921, and besides embodying the objects and advantages set forth in connection with the said Letters Patent, the invention has for its further object to provide a wrench of such type having a pair of sliding jaws each formed with a. shank, and further embodying means to relieve the torsional or lateral strains or stresses on the aw-shan-ks, when the jaws are shifted from normal.
A further object of the invention is to provide a wrench of such class, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, with means Whereby the sliding jaws can be shifted by a pair of operating screws actuated by the thumb and one finger of an operator in the same directions.
A further objectof the invention is to provide a wrench of such class, with means, in a manner hereinafter set forth, with an abutment element constituting means to prevent lateral or torsional strains or stresses with respect to the jaw-shanks, and t further constitute a combined jaw-shank support and guide.
Further objects of the invention are to provide a socket wrench which is simple in its construction and arrangement, very compact when closed, adjustable to fit bodies of various sizes, strong, durable, efficient in its use. conveniently operated, and comparat-ively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other ob ects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth, and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations, and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claim hereunto appended. I
In the drawing forming a portion of this specification and wherein like numerals of thereon.
Fig. 3 is a vertical elevation of a socket wrench in accordance with our invention.
Fig. 4; is a perspective view of the jaws.
Fig. 5 is top plan view of the device with the jaws thereof in the distended position.
Referring in detail t the drawing 1 denotes the stock or body portion of the wrench, provided at its lowerend with a polygonal shank 2, having a transversely disposed aperture 3. The shank 2 is adapted for the reception of a socketed handle for operating the wrench, and the aperture 3 for the reception of an operating bar for the same purpose if location of the work per mits of its use.
At its upper end, the body portion is formed with a pair of spaced jaw guiding members 41-, 4, connected by an integral yoke 5, which with said guiding members t, 4: provide housing for the shanks 6 of the jaws, to be described, thus effectually securing said jaws against vertical and la eral movement relative to the said guiding members.
Each of the shanks 6 carries a vertically disposed jaw 7. The two jaws are of a form suitable to grasp the head of a polygonal nut or bolt or other object which is to be operated. The working faces of the jaws 7 are preferably engrailed, as indicated at 8, to augment their gripping action.
The two jaws and jaw supporting shanks are counterparts in all respects. In the case of each jaw, there is provided an integral spacing portion 9 which elevate respective jaws so that their lower edges are flush with or very slightly above the surface of the yoke 5, said spacing portions 9 approximating the thickness of said yoke.
Referring to each of the jaws 7, it will be observed that the spacing portion 9 thereof, is provided with a shoulder 10, which cooperates for interlocking engagement with a corresponding recessed portion 11 on the end of the shank 6, of each of the jaws 7, to limit movement of the jaws toward each other. During adjustment operations of the jaws the inner faces of the v two shanks 6 bear against each other as is clearly seen in Figure 2, the cross-sectional area of the two approximating that of the space between the guiding members i, 4:.
A longitudinally member 12 is formed integral with the upper faeeof the body portion 1, intermedi ate of the jaw guide members 4, 4'. The
' lower inner face of each of the shanks 6 is formed with a recess 13 in'engagemen with the abutment member 12.
'As clearly illustrated in Figure and 3,
. the width of therecesses 13 of the two shanks 6 combined is commensurate t the width'of the abutment member 12, against which they operate.
The engagement of the shanks 6 with the abutment member 12 serves to counteract and carry the lateral. strain or twist to which said shanks are necessarily subjected when in the distended position.
Upon the lower outer faces, the shanks 6 are provided with a series of rack teeth 14; for the purpose to be described. Extending transversely through the body portion 1 of the wrench, and at right anglesto that formed by the grinding members 4, 4', is an opening 26 adapted to receive rotary operating screws 15 journaled in bearings 16 in the body portion 1.
The screws 15 are knurled to facilitaterotation, for instance by the thumb and index extending abutment finger, and extend slightly beyond the opening26upon each side'o jif the body portion respectively, and mesh with the rack teeth .14 upon the jaw shanks 6.
The construction of the jaws and shanks being identical and mounted between the jaw guide members 4:, a, from respective sides of the body portion 1, it will be seen that the rotation of the screws 15 in the' same direction will cause a simultaneous teeth, the teeth on one shank being oppositely disposed with respect to the teeth on the other shank, operating screws j ournalled in said stock and meshing with said racks for shifting the jaws, the threads of said screws being oppositely disposed relatively to each other, an abutment positioned at the bottom of said recess, and said shanks having their lower ends opposing and overlapping said. abutments. I
In testimony whereof I aihx my signature.
HENBY'SCHLUTZ.
