To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, RICHARD HERVIG, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, and being a citizen of the United States, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in a Lathe Attachment, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertans to make and to use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which illustrate the preferred form of the invention, though it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to the exact details of construction shown and described, as it is obvious that various modifications thereof within the scope of the claims will occur to persons skilled in the art.

It is the object 0f my invention to provide an improved device whereby a rotating work piece may be cut to an ova-l or elliptical cross section.
A further object is to provide an improved operating means for a device of the type described whereby a cutting tool is shifted to engage with the work when the work is shifted so as to be cut to an oval or elliptical cross section.
In the drawings, which show a modiication of the device disclosed in my Patent No. 1,256,131, issued February 12, 1918, 1
designates the head and 2 the head spindle of the lathe or other machine to which my device is attached. The device itself comprises a tubular member 3 interiorly threaded for attachment to the spindle 2 and provided with recesses or keyways in which are placed the segmentally shaped keys 4, 4 and with diametrically opposed longitudinal guideways or faces 5. 5 disposed angularly to the axis of the member 2. Surrounding the tubular member 3 and loosely fitting the spindle 2 is a tubular member 6. The member 6 comprises a shell open at one end and provided at its other end with an end wall Serial N0. 405,757.
7 having an outwardly extending annular projection 8 about the centrally located opening in the end wall 7. The shell of the member 6 is outwardly cylindrical but internally is eccentric to the axis of the member 6 in two directions whereby the inner surface of the member 6 contacts only with diametrically opposite arcuate portions of member 3, member 6 being, therefore, displaceable in opposite directions transversely of the inner tubular member 3. The member 6 is provided with slots adapted to register with the keyways of member 2 so that keys 4 when driven through the slots of member 6 and the keyways of member 3 will secure the members together.
l/Vith the members 3 and 6 so keyed to gether, they are held against relative longi tudinal movement and the faces of the keys 4 which form the chords of the key segments form tracks bearing on the bottoms of the keyways in the tubular member 3. As the member 6 loosely surrounds the member 3, this arrangement of the keys allows the member 6 to be guidedly slid transversely of the spindle2 and the inner member'3. It will be seen that the keys 4 will be rotated because of their engagement in the keyways of member 3 and will in turn rotate the member 6.
Surrounding the member 6 and slidable longitudinally thereof is an annulus 9 provided on its outer surface with an annular projection 10. Diametrically opposed countersunk holes in the annulus 9 receive screws 11 which pass through the annulus 9 and project into longitudinal slots 12 in the member 6 which register with the guideways 5 on the member 3.
Before the annulus is slipped over the member 6, guide blocks 13 are positioned in the slots 12 in the member 6 so as to bear against the guideways 5 and slide longitudinally thereof. These guide blocks 13 are secured tothe annulus 9 by the screws 11 and move with said annulus. Surrounding the annulus 9 is a divisible coupling ring comprising sections 14 and 15 joined together'by bolts 16 in the lugs 17 and 18 at the ends of the respective ring sections. The sections 14 and 15 secure the inwardly extending rings 19 and 2O which serve to confine the balls 21 which bear against the annular projection 10 on the annulus 9 thus forming a bearing which permits the annulus 9 to rotate `freely While the coupling ring is held against rotation.
Mounted in the opening in the end Wall 7 of the member 6 is a tubular member 22 having an inner Wall, cylindrical for part ot' its length and tapering inwardly for the remainder- Mounted in the member 2,2 and adapted to slide therein is a collet 23 having a projecting ring 24` at one end engaglo ing the cylindrical portion of the Wall and tapered at the other end to engage the ta pering portion of the Wall. The collet 23 is split into several pieces for the greater portion of its length so. that upon being forced into engagement with the tapering portion oll the Wall the parts of the'collet will be forced together and serve to grip the Work piece. Between the collet 23 and the plunger 25 is the tubular memberv 26 having a ball and socket engagement with the collet 23 and with the plunger 25, the plunger being` operated in the usual manner vto force the collet 23 forward to. grip the Work or to, permitof the collet 23beingre 25 tracted to release the Work. Mounted in the member 26 is the tubular guide member 27 having an enlarged head portion 28 that limits its insertion in the member 27. rflireaded on to the annular ring 8 is the 30vi`ace plate 29 provided with a projecting ring portion 3,9 that lits over the annulus 9 and serves to protect the interior ot the chuck. Bolts 45 passing` through the cross pieces 3.5 and 36 and the upright pieces 40 and-41 secure the cross pieces to the arms 42 and 43. The 5.5 base piece 44 is adapted to slide, transversely of the machine bed, in a guide piece 46 mounted on the machine bed and is provided with a rack 47 engaged by a pinion 43 mounted on a shaft 49 that is rotated by 6,0 means of a handle 50. Integral with the base piece 44 are the standards or tool supports 51 and 52 which carry the cutting tools 53 and 54 secured to the standards by the bolts 55.
In operation, rotation of the pinion 48 by means of the handle 50 will cause the cross slide, by means of rack 47, to move across in front of the chuck bringing one or the other of the tools 53 and 54 intol engagement` with the Worlv piece 5.6 held by the chuck. In a device of the class described, a machine spindle, a work holder1 carried by said spindle, a tool support, a carrier or said tool support and a connection between said carrier and said work holder adapted to shift said work holder eccentric to said machine spindle and said carrier transversely of the machine simultaneously.

In a device of the class described, a machine spindle, a member secured to said spindle, a sleeve mounted on said member for movement transversely thereof, a collet carried by said sleeve, a tool support, a carrier for said tool support and a connection between said carrier and said sleeve adapted to operate said collet and tool support simultaneously.

In a device of the class described, a machine spindle, a member secured to said spindle, a sleeve mounted on said member or movement transversely thereof, a collet carried by said member, a plurality of tool supports, a carrier adapted to reciprocate said tool supports and a connection between said carrier and said sleeve adapted to move said sleeve in different directions as di'derent tool supports are moved toward the collet.

In a device of the class described, a cross slide, a plurality of tool supports carried by said slide, a machine spindle, a collet chuck carried by the machine spindle and a connection between said slide and chuck adapted to move said collet eccentric to said spindle in one direction when one tool support is moved toward said chuck and to move said collet eccentric to said spindle in another direction when another tool support is moved toward said chuck.

15. In a device of the class described, a machine spindle, a push rod therein, a chuck carried by said spindle and having a collet therein and a connection between said collet and said push rod adapted to permit said collet being positioned eccentrically of said push rod.
16. In a device oit' the class described, a machine spindle, a push rod therein, a chuck driven by said spindle and comprising a collet adapted to be positioned eccentrically of said spindle and a connection between said collet and said push rod having` a ball and socket engagement therewith.
