INDICATING GAUGE.

Be it known that I, OSWALD SOHLAUPITZ, a citizen of the United States, resident of the city of Canton, county of Stark, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Indicating Gauges, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to indicating gauges adapted for use in obtaining the external measurements of articles produced by the limit system of manufacture, such for instance,'as conical or tapered rollers for roller bearings. It has for its principal objects to produce a gauge which will accurately determine whether the conical roller is of correct size, out of round or off-taper. Other objects are to simplify the construction of the gauge, to reduce the cost thereof and to facilitate the gaging operation. The invention consists principally in the construction hereinafter shown and described; and it also con sists in the constructions and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawing, which forms part of this specification and wherein like symbols refer to like parts wherever they occur.
Fig. 1 is a central sectional view of an indicating gauge embodying my invention, a tapered roller being shown mounted therein in position to be gaged;

The gauge shown in the accompanying drawings comprises a framework or hollow Casino: 5. whose base portion is provided with oppositely extending feet 6, whereby said casing is adapted to be supported in an upright position on a work bench. The back of the casing is provided with a removable back plate 7; and the upper front portion of said casino; has an opening therein which is covered by an arcuate scale plate 8. Located within the casing 5 are vertically spaced horizontally disposed shafts 9, 10 and 1.1. These horizontal shafts are supported at their ends by alined pivot screws 12 which, are horizontally adjustable in threaded holes provided therefor in the side walls of the casing. The
inner ends of the pivot screws 12 are preferably coned and are adapted to fit in counter sinks in the ends of the shafts. The pivot screws are provided with lock nuts 13 for locking said screws in their adjusted positions.
A contact lever 14 works in a slot 15 in the front wall of the casing 5 and has a weighted inner end in the form of an extension 14 which has a press fit on the lowermost shaft 9. The contact lever 14 and the extension 14? thereof are removably secured together by means of screws 16. The contact lever 14 extends forwardly and upwardly at an angle and the front portion. of its lower side is located beyond the exterior surface of the casing. The contact lever 14: extends forwardly and upwardly from its supporting shaft and is formed at its free outer end with a segment gear 17, which mesheswith a pin.- ion gear 18 fixed to the intermediate shaft 10. This shaft is located forward of the shafts 9 and 11 and has one end of a lever arm 19 fixed thereto. This lever arm extends rearwardly and upwardly and is provided at its free end with a segment gear 20. This segment gear meshes with a pinion gear 21 which has a press fit on the uppermost shaft 11, which'is disposed substantially in the same vertical plane with the contact lever shaft 9. A pointer or indicator arm 22 has its hub portion fixed to the uppermost shaft 11 and its outer end works in a slot 8 formed in the arcuate scale plate 8. The exterior surface of the scale plate 8 is graduat ed on one side of its slotted readings in .001 inch.
The outer end of the segment gear lever 19 is yieldingly supported by means of a coil portion to g ve spring 23. One end of this spring is secured to the lever 19 and the other end is secured to a bracket 23 secured to the side wall of the casing 5. which connects the side walls of the casing. This stop is adapted to be engaged by a shouldered portion 26 of the contact lever 14: and serves to limit the upward swinging movement of said lever.
Extending upwardly and outwardly from the lower-front portion of the casing 5 is a pair of spaced hearings in the form of lugs 27. These lugs are provided with alined circular bores whose axes are disposed substantially at right angles to the lower surface of the contact lever 14 and in the same vertical plane therewith. Located within the alined bores of the spaced bearings 27 is a cylindrical sleeve 28. This sleeve extends beyond the upper and lower bearings 27 and has its middle threaded for cooperation with the threaded bore of a knurled adjusting nut 29 located between the opposing faces of the bearing 27. The lower end of the sleeve is provided with a spline or feather key 30 which has a sliding fit in a key-way formed in the bore of the lowermost bearing 27.
Mounted on the upper end ofthe sleeve 28 is a rest 32. This rest is of angular sect-ion and is disposed crosswise of the contact lever 14: with one flange facing outward and resting on the upper end of the sleeve 28 and with the other facing inwardly. The outwardly extending flange of the rest 32 is provided on its under surface with a circular boss 33 which snugly fits the upper end of the bore in the sleeve 28. Rotation of the rest with relation to the sleeve is prevented by means of dowel pins 32 which fit in bores in the upper end of said sleeve. The rest is held down on the upper end of the sleeve by means of a stud 34 which extends axially through said sleeve and has its upper end threaded into said rest. The lower end of the stud 34 is provided with a washer 35, which bears against the lower end of the sleeve and is provided with a circular boss that snugly fits the lower end of the bore therein. The washer 35 is clamped against the lower end of the sleeve by means of a nut 36 which is threaded on the lower end of the stud 34: and serves to draw the rest down on the upper end of said sleeve.
Rotatlon of the washer 35 is prevented by means of a pin 37 which has a press fit in said washer and projects upwardly into a bore into the lower end of the sleeve. Free rotation of the adjusting nut 29 is prevented by means of a coil spring 38, which is located in a bore in the lower surface of the lowermost bearing lug and bears against an, eccentric portion 35 of the washer 35. This spring exerts a downward pressure on thesleeve whereby, the threads of the sleeve grip the threads of the knurled nut and. prevent said. nut from jarring loose.
Mounted within the l-seat formed by the diverging flanges of the rest 32 is an article support or roll block 39 of angular section.
The roll block or carrier 39 extends crosswise of the contact lever and is capable of being manually slid lengthwise in the rest The roll block, when placed in position on the rest, forms a V-shaped groove or trough for the reception of the article that is to be gaged, such article being shown in the form of a conical roller A for a conical roller bearing. The roll block is provided at one end with an abutment in the form of a stop-plate 39 which is secured to one end of the outwardly extending flange of said roll block. This plate serves as a stop for the large end of the roller A and has its inner edge beveled at an angle corresponding to the angle of the chamfered portion of said end of said roller. At the end opposite from the stop plate, the inwardly extending flange of the roll block is notched, as at 40, and the corresponding end of the outwardly extending flange of said block is beveled, as at 41. The notch 40 and the beveled portion 41 are for purposes for providing clearance sufficient to enable the operator to grasp the small headed end of the roller. The upper surface of the outwardly extending flange of the roll block is inclined at an angle which will bring the portion of the roller that is engaged by the contact lever in a plane substantially parallel with the plane of the contacting surface of the said lever; and the inner surface of the inwardly extending flange of said roll block is also beveled at an angle corresponding to the taper of said roller.
The operation of the gauge is as follows: A roll block for a roll of the desired size and shape is placed within the angle formed by the rest 82 and a master roll is seated within the angle of said roll block with the large end of said roll abutting against the stop plate 39: The knurled nut 29 is then adjusted to bring the roll in proper posltion with relation to the contact lever and the master roll is then removed, leaving the operating parts of the gauge in correct adjustment for gaging rolls patterned after the master roll used in setting the gauge. To determine the size and circularity of the roller, the roller is seated within the roll block 39 and rotated. The contact lever, which extends at right angles to' the axis of the roller and is downwardly overbalanced by reason of its weighted portion 14?, bears against the roller and transmits any variation in the size or circularity thereof to the pointer arm 21 through the segment gear lever 19. If found correct for size and roundness, the roll block is next shifted horizontally in the direction of the rollaxis, thus causing the roller to move crosswise of the contact lever. If the roller is of the desired size, taper and circularity, the pointer remains stationary. If the roller varies from the master roll in size, taper or roundness, such variations will cause the contact lever to swing on its pivot which movement will be transmitted through the pinion gear 18, segment 19 to the pointer 21, which will move over the scale plate and indicate thereon, the amount of such inaccuracies.
By reason of the amplifying or multiplying system of levers which transmit motion from the initial stylus or contact lever to the pointer, slight inaccuracies in size, taper and contour of the roller will be indicated on the graduated scale plate on a greatly enlarged scale. The stop pin 24 may be adjusted towards and away from the contact lever to limit the rearward swinging movement thereof. A different roll block and master roll are necessary for rolls of different sizes. By turning the knurled adjusting nut 29 the gauge is set for rollers of different size and taper. The turning of the nut causes the sleeve to travel axially in its bearings, whereby the roll block may be advanced towards or retracted from the contact lever a distance SLllllClQIlt to bring the pointer into the desired position with relation to the scale.
The hereinbefore described device admits of considerable modification without departing from the invention: therefore, I do not wish to be limited to the exact details and arrangements of parts shown and described.
What I claim is:
1. A gauge comprising a holder for an article to be gaged, a contact member in position to bear against said article, a pointer, a multiplying system for transmit ting motion from said contact member to said pointer, and means for adjusting said support towards and away from said contact member, said holder being mounted for bodily movement with relation to said contact member in a plane substantially pai allel with the plane of the contacting surface of said contact member and substantially at right angles thereto.
2. A gauge comprising a holder for an article to be gaged, a contact member in position to bear against said. article, a pointer, a multiplying system for transmitting motion from said contact member to said pointer, means for adjusting said support towards and away from said contact member, said support being mounted for bodily movement crosswise of said contact member, and an adjustable stop for limiting the movement of said contact member away from the article.
3. A gauge for measuring articles of circular section, said gauge comprising a holder for an article to be gaged, a contact member in position to bear against said article, an indicating mechanism, a multiplying system for transmitting motion from said contact member to said indicating 4. contour and taper of conical articles, said gauge comprising a casing, a holder for the article to be gaged, a lever pivoted in said casing in position to bear against said article, an indicating mechanism mounted in said casing and cooperating with said lever to be actuated thereby, a support for said holder, said holder being adapted to rotatably support said article with its axis disposed crosswise of said lever, and means for adjusting said support towards and away from said lever, said holder being mounted on said support for sliding movement crosswise of said lever.
5. A gauge for measuring articles of circular section, said gauge comprising a lever in position to yieldably engage the article, a pointer, a multiplying system for transmitting motion from said lever to said pointer, and a holder for supporting said article with its axis disposed crosswise of the plane of the swinging movement of said lever, said holder being arranged for sliding movement in such crosswise direction.
6. A gauge for measuring articles of circular section, said gauge comprising a contact lever in position to yieldably engage the article, a pointer, a multiplying system for transmitting motion from the contact lever to said pointer, a holder having 'a 'V- shaped seat for rotatably supporting said article with its axis disposed crosswise of said contact lever, said holder being arranged for sliding movement in such crosswise direction, and means for adjusting said holder towards and away from said contact lever.
7. A gauge for measuring articles of circular section, said gauge comprising a contact lever in position to bear against an article to be gaged, a pointer, a multiplying system for transmitting motion from the contact lever to the pointer, a holder adapted to support said article with the axis thereof disposed crosswise of said lever, a support for slidably supporting said holder for movement crosswise of said contact lever, and means operatively engaging said support for adjusting the same towards and away from said contact lever.
8. A gauge for measuring articles of circular section, said gauge comprising a contact lever in position to bear against an article to he gaged, a pointer, a multiplying system for transmitting motion from the contact lever to the pointer, a holder adapted to support said article with the axis thereof disposed crosswise of said lever, a support for slidably supporting said holder for movement crosswise of said contact lever, and means operatively engaging said support for adjusting the same towards and away from said contact lever, said holder being removably supported on said support, whereby said holder is adapted to be replaced by similar holders designed to re- 10 ceive articles of different shapes and sizes.
