UNITED STATES- WILLIAM I4. STARK, 01 HASTINGS, MICHIGAN.
HORN OB AMPLIFIER FOB PHONOGBAIPHS.
Application filed. June 24,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM L. STARK, a citizen of the United States, residin at Hastings, county of Barry, State of ichigan, have invented certain new and useful structural details, will definitely appear.
from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodi ment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this application, in which:
Fig. I is a front view of my improved horn or amplifier.
Fig. II is a plan view thereof.
Fig. III is a side view partially in central vertical section on a line corres onding to line 23-43 of Figs. I, II and D? Fig. IV is a transverse section through the neck portion on a line corresponding to line H of Figs. I and II.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little I arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a bell portion, preferably of rectangular cross section, as illustrated, consisting of the bottom wall 1, top wall 2 and side walls 3. These walls are arranged to converge rearwardly, the top wall having a section 4 at its front end disposed at a substantially greater angle than the main portion of the top, thus providing a wide mouth. The bell portion is of substantial width at its rear end, as clearly appears from the drawing.
I provide a flat downwardly expanding neck consisting of the rear wall 5, front wall 6 and side walls 7, the front wall 6 extending only to the top wall 2 of the bell. The rear wall extends to the bottom wall 1 of the bell,
1921. Serial No. 479,999.
so that the bottom wall constitutes a bottom for the neck. Within the neck is an A-' shaped partition 8 disposed with its apex centrally below the mouth 9 of the neck, thereby providmg a pair of downwardly diverging sound passages 10 which open into the bell at 11 at substantially separate points.
A chamber 12 enclosed by the Walls 8 is separated from the horn by the plate 13 whlchhas a central opening 14 therein. The partition 8 is preferably provided with a central opening 15 in its apex. The mouth 9 s provided with a slide 16 having an open- 1ng l7 therein adapted to be brou ht into register with the opening 9 of t e neck, thereby serving as a damper for this openlng.
My improved horn is especially designed for use in cabinet phonographs and produces very clear and full pleasing tones.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. horn or amplifierfor phonographs comprising a flaring bell portion of rectangul ar cross section and of substantial width gt its inner end, a flat downwardly expandmg neck portion disposed at right angles to the bell, the bottom-wall of the bell constituting a bottom wall for the neck, an A shaped partition disposed in said neck with its apex centrally below the mouth of the neck providing a pair of downwardly diverging sound passages opening into said bell at the sides thereof, said partition having a restricted opening at the apex thereof, and a partition plate separating the chamber enclosed by said neck partition from the bell, said partition plate having a central opening therein.-
2. A horn or amplifier for phonographs comprising a flaring bell portion of rectangular cross section and of substantial width separating the chamber enclosed by said neck partition from the bell.
said neck partition from the bell, said partition plate having a central opening therein.
In Witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand and. seal in the presence of two Witnesses.
WILLIAM L. STARK. [L.s.]
