Be it rknown that I, HowARn B. MUNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city of Chicago and State of Illinois, have invented'new and useful Improvements in Heel-Blank-ClampingDevices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to shoe machinery and particularly to a self-contained .portable clamping device for clamping unattached heels while they are-being trimmed by the rotary'cutter of a heel trimmingmachine.

*In one aspect the invention may beregarded an improvement of the clamping device disclosed in'm'y co-pending application Serial No. 347,327, filed the 26th day of December, 1919, forheel clamping deviceA for use in trimming unattached heels.

A clamping device `of this type embodies in its construction a bracket with supporting means, for example, two plates to'engage the upper and lower faces of the heel blank and this bracket is lprovided with means for moving one of these plates toward or from the other to facilitatethe introduction and removal of the heel blanks.

VThe general Aobject of my invention is to provide 'simple and eicient means for supporting and guiding the movable heel plate and td provide simple and eiiicient means for vsupporting and adjusting the bracket which carries the Aheel plate.

vFurther objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.

The invention consists in the novel features, and in the general combination of parts to :be particularly described hereinafter, all of vwhich contribute to produce a simple andy efficient heel-blank clamping device.'` A preferred embodimentk of my invention will vbeI particularly described in the following specification, while the broad scope of my invention will be pointed out in the appended claims. i

Referring' more particularly to the parts, 1a represents the block or foot of a bracket l which is provided on its lower side with means for engaging the under face or bottom ,lift o'f a heel-blank 2. rI`his means may be in the form of a heel 'plate 3, removably and adjustably mounted'on the under face ofthe bracket byy means of screw bolts 4 and 5 'which pass through slots 6. If desired heel plates such as the'heel plate 3 of slightly different forms may be provided corresponding to different shapes or 'types vof heels.v The bracket 1 is formed above into a lguide head 7 having `a guide-way 8 in which there is received' a slide 9. Any suitable means may be provided for preventing the slide-from rotating in the guide-way. I prefer simply to make the guide-way and slide of angular or square cross section. (See Figure 3).. To the lower end of the'slide a counter-plate 10 is rigidly secured bya removable lscrew 11, the head of the screw being received in a recess 12 in the curved under face of the counter-plate. When the heel-plate 3 is removed access may be had by a screwdriver to the slot in the head of the screw 11. Associated with the slide 9 I provide ya threaded stem having a thread of high pitch, coloperating with which I provide means for effecting the movement of the slide up or down in the guide-way 8. I prefer to provide: a threaded stemr 13 extending upwardly from the upper end of the slide. The thread on this stem is of high pitch and for this reason is preferably a double thread. 0n

lthe threaded stem I provide a nut 14 which rigidly carries a swiveling collar 15 which rest-s against the upper face 16 of the guidvthea-head 7 by means of counter-sunk screws 18.

The nut 14"maybe rotated at will by means of a removable wrench or lever 19 having a handle 20. A socket 21 is provided in the wrench lever near its middle point so as to facilitate the rapidy application of the wrench, and its quick removal from the nut when desired.

With this construction it will be evident that a relatively small angular rotation of the nut will impart a relatively great amount of movement to the counter-plate 10 away from the heel-plate 3, that is to say a suiicient movement to enable the trimmed heel to be removed and an untrimmed heel- A 22 which opens away from the heel-plate 3,

and this socket receives a tongue 23 extend-k ing downwardly at the lower end of the bracket. I provide means for adjusting the tongue and securing the same in the foot. For adjusting the bracket and securing the same against being pulled out by the clamping force I provide a threaded opening 24 in the lower end of the tongue which receives the upper end of the threaded bolt 5, and I provide the block with set screws 25 which seat against the side of the tongue so as to prevent the same from being forced downwardly, The lower end of the screw or bolt 5 is provided with a head 26 and a washer 27 whicheffectively resists any upward pull on the bracket which is Voccasioned by the tightening of the counter-plate 10 against the upper face of the heel-blank.

The blockor foot 1L of the bracket may .be provided with a horizontal tongue or handle 28 which may be received in the socketf29 extending into a plate 30 from a vertical face 31, and this plate may be secured on the upper face of a table 32 or work bench. y

It will be evident that by means of the screw 5 and set screws 25 the bracket 1 may be adjusted upr or down so as to hold the counter-plate 10 at any pre-determined distance from the heel-plate 3.

In a self-contained portable heel-blank clamping device, the combination of a bracket having relatively fixed means for engaging the bottom lift of the heel-blank, said bracket having a guiding head, a slide mounted to move on said guiding head and held thereby against rotation, a counterplate carried by said slide for engaging the upper face of a heel-blank, a stem having a high-pitch thread A associated withv said slide, andmeans actuated at will and including a part engaging and co-operating with 1 the-threaded stem to move the slide up or down in the guide-way to eiiect the clamp.-
