Be it known that I, JosEPH H. Porn, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamilton, in the county of Essex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain Improvements in Machines for Operating on Shoes, of which the following description, in
connectionwith the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the drawings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to machines for operating upon shoes, being especially appli cable to heel-attaching machines. Objects of the invention, are to increase the capabilities of such apparatus and to insure against accident through negligence in their operation.
Inv the attainment of these objects, I provide as a feature of the invention novel means for preventing interference with objects being transferred to a holding device, by a member for operating upon said ob jects, this means, in the performance of its functions, being arranged to move the operating member out of the path of the objects. Preferably this movement is effected by con nection to the mechanism which accomplishes the transfer. As herein illustrated in the application of the invention to a heel-attaching machine, a block carrying drivers for operating upon nails held in a die or nail block is mounted to slide upon a reciprocatory head by connections to an oscillatory loader mechanism which delivers nails to the nail block.
As a further feature of the invention, I have combined with an operating member having independent movements, for example those previously indicated, an actuating mechanism for producing one of the movements, together with novel means for both controlling theactuating mechanism and effecting the other movement of the operating member. This common means is preferably in the form of a transfer mechanism delivering to the holding device, there being 0on nections between thetransfer mechanism and the operating member and actuating mechanism. The heel-attaching machine of the present disclosure has a reciprocatory head upon which a driver block is mounted to move and actuating mechanism for the head, there being a latch for the actuating mechanism, and a movable member, as the loader mechanism, connected to the latch and block for actuating them.
Still another featureof the invention con cerns the protection of the parts from breakage, as a result of a holding device which is movably supported being out of correct alinement with the mechanism operating upon the objects held. In the attainment of this, I furnish means for retaining the holding device against movement and control by said means the actuating mechanism for the operating member. Thus, in securing the nail block of the'heel-attaching machine upon its support, its latch may engage means which controls the mechanism for applying power to the-drivers.

For the purposes of the present disclosure my invention is described as applied. to a heel-attaching machine of the type which is the subject of the patent to me, No. 446,- 885, granted February 24:, 1891. At 10 appears a portion of the frame of the machine,
in which are mounted to reciprocate vertical side rods 11, 12 carrying fast upon their upper extremities a head furnished by a top girt 14. In ways 16 extending across the under side of the head there is mounted ,to slide a driver block 18 from which depends a set of drivers 20 registering in the reciprocation of the head with openings 22 in a die or nail block 2 1, this block being removably held in ways 26 in the frame. In attaching heels to shoes. this machine operates in the well-known way, the movable elements being actuated by power mechanism, as in the patent previously mentioned, under the control of a lever 25 fulcrumed upon the frame belOW the nail block and held in its inactive I ment. preventing delivery so great that the position by a spring 27 connecting the lever and the frame. which is guided in vertical ways 32 formed upon the arm portion 28. The outer section ofthe arm is shown as adjustably held in place by a set screw 34 threaded into the arm portion 30 and passin through a slot in the portion 28. By shifting one part of the arm upon the other and fixing in place with the set screw, the loader'mechanism may be arranged to best deliver to nail blocks of diiferent heights. In a recess at the outer extremity of the loader arm is a loader block 38, provided with openings dis= posed as the nails are to be in the heel operated upon and movable by oscillationabout the rod 12 from a nail-receiving position as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the ,di a'wing. to a nail-delivering position in which the loader block openings are alined with certain of those in thenail block. Thenail-receiving position of the loader arm is determined variably by a stop screw 40 threaded through the arm and contacting with a portion 42 of the frame. The nails inthe loader block are supported by a pivoted shutter 44 latched in its position below the openings in the block by a pm 46 depending from the loader arm and engaging a depression in the shutter. In the nail-delivering position an inclined face of a projection 48 "upon the shutter comes into contact with a tripping projection 50 extending above the nail block, this releasmg the shutter from the pin 46 and permittlng a spring 52 surrounding the pivotal point of the shutter to withdraw it from beneath the loader block, allowing the nails tofall into the openings 22 in position for drlvlng. This sleeve is mounted upon the outside of a bearing sleeve 60 about the side rod 12, this last-mentioned sleeve being flanged at its lower end to sup port the sleeve 58 and being secured to t e top girt by a set screw 62. From the front of the sleeve 58 project lugs 64 connectedb-y a lin1r66 to the adjacent edge of the driver block. Through the link is shown threaded a crews? arranged to contact at its inner end with the surface of the sleeve 58, By this screw, the extreme position of the driver blocktoward the right as viewed in Fig. 1 may be determined to correctly aline the drivers with. the nail block openings 22. When the loader arm is in its nail-receiving position the rod 54 rests against the extreme inner end of the slot 56, the driver bloc]; at this time being in its operating position. As the loader arm is swung in a clockwise direction, as viewed from above, to transfer its load of nails to the nail block, the rod 54 first moves idly in the slot, this movement being to allow for the excess of angula r movement of the loader over the amount which it is desired to shift the driver block. Upon arriving at theopposite end of the slot the contact of the rod rotates the sleeve 58 clockwise about the bearing sleeve 60 and through the link 66 shifts the driver block in its ways in advance of the loader block, so that when the latter arrives at the nail-delivering position the drivers are entirely removed from its path. The nails having been supplied to the nail block, the opposite rotation of the loader arm by contact of the rod 54 withthe other extremity normal position. Then, when the machine operates, vertical. travel of the slot over the rod may'occur without interference with the shifting elements for the driver block.
To insure the correct alinement of the drivers with the nail block openings at the time of operation, and yet to permit the travel of said drivers away from and toward their normal position under the control of the loader arm, I lock the driver. block in itsoperating relation, freeing it only when at its extreme of upward travel, Near the center of the upper face of the block 18 is a depression 68 to admit the lower end of a latch rod 70.1mou'nted to slide through a collar 72 screwed into the upper extremity of a vertical. bore through the top girt. Surrounding this rod is a helical spring contacting with'the collar and with anfenlargee ment upon the rod and'serving .to urge said rod toward the driver block. The rod 70 extends up through the sleeve 72 and has upon its threaded'upper end a nut and lock nut "76 beneath which projects the forked end of a lever 78 fulcrumed upon the top girt. Through an opening in the opposite arm of the lever passes a vertical rod 80, the lower end of which is secured to a yoke 82 fastened to the frame. Upon the extremity of the rod 80 are threaded nuts 84, the under side of the lowermost of which bears upon the lever 7 8 when the top girt is at its highest point. The elements are so related and the nuts 7 6 and 84 so adjusted, that at this time the contact of the lever with the nuts 8 rocks the lever about its fulcrum to draw the rod out of the depression 68, thus freeing the driver block for movement by the loader arm. Immediately upon the beginning of downward movement of the top girt the latch bar 70 engages the depression 68 as a result of the travel of the lever 78 away from the nuts 84, looking the driver block in alinement with the nail block openings.
As the operating alinement of the drivers and the openings 22 exists when the loaderarm is in its nail-receiving position, it is desired to prevent operation of the actuating mechanism for the drivers at all other times. To this end, there is pivoted to the start ing lever 25 a rod 86 adjustable in length by a right and left nut 88. At its top the rod is guided by a head 90 movable in a vertical bore in a casing 91 fixed to the side of the frame. In a connecting lateral. bore is mounted a latch 92, this being so located that when the starting lever is raised to the non-operating point the latch lies just below the under side of the head, it being normally urged into the vertical bore beneath the head by a spring 94 between the latch and a plug 96 closing the outer end of the lateral bore. The latch 92 has an upward projection 98 extending into the path of a contact projection 100 from the under side of the loader arm. When this loader arm is in nail-receiving position, at which time the drivers 20 are properly related to the openings 22 in the nail block for the nailing operation, the pressure of the contact portion 100 against the latch projection 981 withdraws said latch from beneath the head 90' of the starting lever rod. permitting the lever to be depressed to bring the power mechanism into operation to actuate the drivers. In any other position of the loader arm the travel of the projection 100 away from the latch projection 98, releases the latch, allowing the spring 9% to press it under the head of the starting lever rod, thus locking the machine against actuation.
the nail block 241 is not so located in its ways that its openings are in perfect alinement with the drivers when they descend, the latter would be broken. When thus positioned, the nail block is locked by a latch 102 operating in a horizontal bore in the frame and pressed into co-operation with a depression 104 in the block 24; by a spring 106 surrounding its stem 108. At the outer extremity of the latch stem is a finger piece 110, and from this extends a pin 112 for engagement with a depression in the frame. With the pin and frame depression alined, the spring 106 may force the latch 102 into the depression in the nail block, holding this ready for the operation. The latch stem 108 has a lateral projection 114: passing into the casing 91 in a plane beneath the head 90. When the latch pin 112 is in the frame depression and the nail block is locked, the projection 11a is at one side of the head 90, so that the starting lever is freed for depression. When, however, the pin 112 is withdrawn and' turned to rest upon the frame, thus releasing the nail block latch, the projection 114 lies beneath the head 90, looking this against downward movement and preventing actuation of the machine.
It is to be noted that as this apparatus is arranged, there can be no interference of the nails in the loader mechanism with the drivers, and that, in spite of the movement of said drivers to remove them from the path of the nails, their correct working alinement with the nail block openings is insured by the locking of the driver block at the beginning of its operation. Moreover, as the apparatus can be started only with the loader arm in its nail-receiving position, at which time the drivers are up and locked, and since the starting is also dependent upon the nail block being properly secured in place, breakage of the drivers by contact between them and the nail block is rendered impossible.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is:
1. In a machine of the class described, a holding device, transfer mechanism movable to deliver objects to the holding device and to retreat leaving said objects in the holding device for an operation upon them, a member for operating upon the work said member co-operating with the holding device and normally lying in the path of objects carried by the transfermechanism, and means arranged to move the operating memberout of the path of the objects.
2. In a machine of the class described, a holding device, transfer mechanism movable to deliver objects to the holding device and to retreat leaving said objects in the holding device for an operation upon them, a member for operating upon the work, said member co-operating with the holding device and normally lying in the path of obj ects carried by the transfer mechanism, and connections to. the transfer mechanism arranged to move the operating member.
3. In a machine of the class described, a nail holding device, movable transfer mechanism, movable nail driving mechanism cooperating with the holding device, and con- .nections to the transfer mechanism for moving the driving mechanism into and-out of co-operation with the holding device.
4-. In a machine of the class described, a holding device, movable transfer mechanism, an operating member co-operating with the holding device and normally lying in the path of objects carried by the transfer mechanism, means arranged to move the operating member out of the path of the objects, and means arranged to determine independently of the transfer mechanism the relation of the operating memberand holding device in their cooperation.
5. I11 a machine of the class described, a holding device, movable transfer mechanism, movable driving mechanism co-operating with the holding device, connections to the transfer mechanism for moving the driving mechanism, and variable means carried by the connections and arranged to etermine the relation of the driving mechanism and holding device in their co-operation.
16. In a machine of the class described, a holding-device, movable transfer mechanism, movable driving mechanism co-operating with the holding device, and connections to the transfer mechanism for moving the driving mechanism, there being provision for lost motion in the connections.
7. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, nail loader mechanism movable over and away from the nail block, drivers alined with the nail block and projecting into the path of the nails in the loader mechanism, and means arranged to move the drivers out of alinement with the nail block in advance of the loader mechanism.
8. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, a reciprocatory head, a driver block mounted to move upon the head, oscillatory loader mechanism delivering to the nail block, and connections between the loader mechanism and driver block.
9. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, reciprocatory side rods and a head carried thereby, a driver block mounted to move upon the head, a member rotatable about a side rod, loader mechanism mounted to oscillate about the rod, and connections between the loader mechanism and member an'dbetween the member and driver block.
10. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, reciprocatory side rods and a head carried thereby, a driver block mounted to move upon thehead, a member rotatable abouta side rod, loader mechanism mounted to oscillate about the rod, connections between the loader mechanism and member and between themember and driver block, and position-determining means for the driver block carried by the connections.
11. In a heel-attaching machine, anail block, reciprocatory side rods and a head carried thereby, a driver block mounted to move upon the head, a sleeve rotatable about a side rod and having a slotted portion, a link connecting the sleeve and driver block, and loader mechanism oscillating about the rod, there being a projection from the loader mechanism co-operating with the slotted portion of the sleeve.
12. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, reciprocatory side rods and a head carried thereby, a driver block mounted to move upon the head, a sleeve rotatable about a side rod, a link connecting the sleeve and driver block, a screw threaded through the link for contact with the sleeve, loader mechanism oscillating about the rod, and connections between the loader mechanism and sleeve.
13. In a heel-attaching machine,a nail block, reciprocatory side rods and a head carried thereby, a driver block mounted to move upon the head, a sleeve rotatable about a side rod, a link connecting the sleeve and driver block, loader mechanism oscillating about the rod, and connections having pro vision for lost motion between the loader mechanism and sleeve.
14. In a machine of the class described, a, holding devlce, movable transfer means cooperating with the holding device, an operating member movable, toward and from the holding device and also movable with the transfer means out of and into alinement with said holding device, and retaining means for the operating member against one of its movements, said retaining means being controlled by the other movement.
15. In a heel-attaching machine, a frame, a nail block carried thereby, side rods mounted to reciprocate in the frame, a head fixed to the side rods, a driver block mounted to move upon the head, a latch connecting the head and, driver block, a lever fulcrumed upon the head, and a contact member carried upon the frame and extending through the lever.
16, Ina machine of the class described, a holding device, means for supplying-articles ,to be held, an operating member movable means for controlling the actuating mechanism and effecting the movement of alinement.
18. In a machine of the class. described, a holding device, an operating member movable into co-operation with the holding device and being also movable out of and into alinement therewith, actuating mechanism for producing the movement of co-operation, transfer mechanism delivering to the holding device, and connections between the transfer mechanism and the operating member and actuating mechanism, the connection to the operating member being arranged to cause its movement.
19. In a machine of the class described, a holding device, an operating member movable into co-operation with the holding de-.
vice and being also movable out of and into alinement therewith, actuating mechanism for producing the movement of co-operation, a latch for the actuating mechanism, transfer mechanism, and connections between the transfer mechanism and the operating member and latch, the connection to the operating member being arranged to cause its movement into and out of a'linement.
20. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, a reciprocatory head, a driver block mounted to move upon the head, actuating mechanism for the head, a latch for the actuating mechanism, and a nail-loader arranged to move the driver block and latch.
21. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, a reciprocatory head, a driver block mounted to move upon the head, actuating mechanism for the head, a latch for the actuating mechanism, loader mechanism delivering to the nail block, and connections from the loader mechanism to the driver block and latch arranged to cause the movement thereof.
22. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, reciprocatory drivers co-operating therewith, actuating mechanism for the drivers, a latch for the actuating mechanism, and loader mechanism delivering to the nail block and having a projection arranged to cause the movement of the latch.
23. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, reciprocatory drivers .co-operating therewith, actuating mechanism for the drivers, a latch for the actuating mechanism, means for normally forcing the latch into cooperation with the actuating mechanism, and loader mechanism delivering to the nail block and acting upon the latch to release the actuating mechanism.
24. In a machine of the class described, a support, a holding device movably mounted thereon, means for retaining the holding device against movement, an operating member movable into co-operation with the hold ing device, and actuating mechanism for the operating member, said actuating mechanism being controlled by the retaining means.
25. In a machine of the class described, a support, a holding device separable therefrom, a latch for securing the holding dcvice-in place in the support, an operating member movable into co-operation with the holding device, and actuating mechanism for the operating member under the control of the latch.
26. In a machine of the class described, a support, a holding device separable therefrom, a latch for securing the holding device in place in the support and releasing it therefrom, an operating member movable into co-operation with the holding device, and actuating mechanism for the operating member under the control of the latch in the position for release of the holding device.
27. In a heel-attaching machine, a frame, a nail block supported thereon, a latch mounted in the frame and movable out of and into engagement with the block, reciprocatory drivers co-operating with the nail block, power mechanism for the drivers, and controlling means for the power mechanism engaged by the latch.
28. In a heel-attaching machine, a frame, a nail block supported thereon, a latch mounted in the frame and movable out of and into engagement with the block, reciprocatory drivers co-operating with the nail block, power mechanism for the drivers, and controlling means for the power mecha nism engaged by a portion of the latch when said latch is out of engagement with the nail block.
29. In a machine of the class described, a support, a holding device and an operating member relatively movable toward and from each other, both being movable out of and into alinement, actuating mechanism for producing the first-mentioned movement, and means controlling both the holding device and the operating member in their alinement, said controlling means also controlling the actuating mechanism.
30. In a machine of the class described, a support, a holding device and an operating member relatively movable toward and from each other, both being movable out of and into alinement, actuating mechanism for producing the first-mentioned movement, and independent means for controlling the holding device and operating mechanism with respect to their alinement, each of said controlling means co-operating with the ac tuating mechanism to prevent its action when the holding device and operating member are out of alinement.
31. In a heel-attaching machine, a block having naiLholding openings, drivers movable into the openings, both the drivers and block being also movable transversely, power mechanism for producing the firstmentioned movement, and means for controlling the transverse movement, said means also controlling the power mechanism.
- 32. In a machine of the class described, nail holder, means for operating upon the nails in the holder, nail transfer mechanism delivering to the holder, and a clearing member movable across the holder.
33. In a machine of the class described, a nail holder, means for operating upon the nails in the holder, nail transfer mechanism delivering to the holder, and a clear-.
ing membermounted on the transfer mechanism.
34. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, co-op'erating drivers, loader mechanism delivering to the nail block, and a clearing member movable across the nail block after the delivery thereto.
35. In a heel-attaching machine, a nail block, co-operating drivers, a loader arm oscillating over the nail block, and a brush carried by the forward side of the arm and contactingwith the block.
