SIGNAL LIGHT.
Application lled March 24, 192,2. Serial No. fftit.
To all whom it may concern:
' Be it known that l, SAMUEL KOTZ, a. citizen of the United States, residing at Washin ton, D. C., have invented a new and usefu improvement in the Signal Lights, of
which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a signal light to be used on automobiles in order to indicate to observers either in front of or in the rear of the vehicle, any change in motion contemplated by the driver of the same.
One of the objects of this invention is to produce such a signal light of simple but durable construction.
Another object of this invention is to produce such a signal light of great efficiency consonant with the simplicity of construction used.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will appear from the more detailed description set forth below, in which the accompanying drawing illustrates by Way of example by Figure l, the device in operative position on an automobile; by Figure 2, a rear view of the signal light; by Figure 3, a section throu h the vertical center of Figure 2; and by l* igure 4, a detail of the catch shown.
In the following detailed description, it is y one skilled in the art without departing from the spirit or` scope of my invention.
In constructing this device, a shell preferably cylindrical in form and made of metal, in two parts, l and 2, is hinged as at 3i, and further provided with a catch or lock el 'for securing the two halves togetlier. By releus ing the catch, the upper part ot thc shell can 4o be turned on its hinge away from the lower part. The edges of the metal shell are turned in as at 10 and 1l in order to provide lips a ainst which the lenses 5 and G rest. The s ell halves are also preferably provided with grooves l' and 8 stamped from the shell members which grooves serve to hold the lenses in position. The lenses 5 und 6, are preferably of glass. painted in order' to act as indicators. For example` the rear lens 6, as illustrated, preferably shows the word Stop together with an extended hand. both in red on a black background. The front lens 5, preferably carries the though an intermediate position in word Turn and a douhle headed arrow' e-- both also in red on hlsclt bscl'ground. Obviously other words and che. he used 1n place of or in ccnjuneir those indicated. The sheii also 'it with a conventional lamp socket and b: and a lamp 12. Pertorutions i3, i. preferably provided adjacent. the lomp in the lower half of the shell slimving l i passage ofwires to the inside et the light case.
It is obvious that the shape of the s. eil may be cylindrical as illustrated by van nl. example, or may be varied at will to taire other forms without departing from spirit of my invention. The term peripheral shell as used in the claims isintencied to cover all of these equivalent Or to suggest a further modification, n piece of sheet metal, say copper, is stain provide ribs or grooves as referred to above and is then hent into the form of say c c ylinis drical shell. The contacting ends ci tins si l are then bent over to provide lips which .y be gripped together in any desired man er say by rivets, bolts and nuts, etc. in this manner a cylindrical shell in one piece ohso tained which holds the lenses in position.
In use the device is permanently or otherwise attached to a proper position, such ns the left hand front or rear inurl guard, el.-
.f he Se used, by soldering, or removably attached screws, rivets. etc. The wiresl controlling "i signal light are connected to the usue.` source of current, which may be the battery of car or any other convenient source, and the control button placed. either on the steering wheel or close thereto. When the operator of the automobile desires to change his nio-- tion, he presses the button whereupon tile. signal light is illuminated and thus warns those in the rear as well those in front;- such as a traffic policeman or approaching aut-omohilist-of his intention. These results are efticacously accomplished hy the exceedingly simple construction se )i n Having now set forth my investi the construction or materials may he made by those skilled in the'art, .l claims-- l. A signal llght to be attached to ut-omo biles comprising a cylindrical,
m 1,431,821 ig .chell made in two parts hinged togetl1er,two eoactin parts, hinged to ether on one with means for lookin the paz'ts'together, side, and a apted to he locke together on 10 lenses, means on the s ell for holding the the other side, grooves in the shell parts, lenses over tl1eshell'openings, but removably lenses held in place by the groove edges and attached, and ar conventional lamp socket a conventional lamp socket and lamp in the and lamp inthe base of the light case. 4 base of the-fshell.. 2. A signal light to be attached to autonoo biles, comprsing a cylindrical shell made in I SAMUL KOTZ.
