This invention relates to improvements in electrorlnedical apparatus and like v ibratory devices employing an inductive coil of the vibrator type.
The device herein illustrated as embodying the invention is more especially designed for use in connection with eleotro-medical apparatus in which electric current utilized as a curative agent. Suchelectrical apparatus serves the usual function of intensifying the current, there being ordinarily provided additional mechanism for controlling, by hand, the rate of vibration of the armature of the induction coil, which element is ordinarily termed the vibrator.
An induction coil designed for the purposes above suggested, and embodying the invention, is illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which- Fig. 1 is a view in side elevation of an induction coil together with the regulating de vices therefor, with parts shown in section,

An elementary induction coil, as known in the art of electricity, consists of a soft iron core about which is wound, at least two separatecircuits, one circuit consisting of a relatively large number of turns of fine wire and termed the secondary circuit, and the othercircuit consisting of a relatively small number-of turns of coarse wire, and termed the primary circuit. Without going into a detailed explanation of the electrlcal phenomena of the induction coil, it is sufficient to statethat if this coil is placed in an electhe discharge end of the circuit may be increased or raised, the nature or frequency of the impulses in the current being controlled by means of avibrating armature having the form of a metallic strip of metal fixed at one end and ter- WILLIAIVI I-I. minating at its free end in close proximity to one end of the core of the induction coil. As clearly shown in Fig. 1, the coil 1 is cylindric in form and surrounded by an insulated covering which conceals the wire. At one end of the coil is mounted a disk or end plate 2, preferably of insulating material, which serves as a support for the vibrator 3 which is fixed at one end adjacent the periphery 6 of the disk 2 and extends radially toward the center of the coil, terminating at a distance from the extremity of the iron core 4-. As a preferable construction, a contact plate 5 is mounted at the free end of the vibrator arm 3. Spaced from one end of the induction coil, that is, the vibrator end, is mounted an annular plate 6 having screw threads about its periphery, this plate being made of insulating material, such as molded rub- 7 proximity to the arm 3 of the vibrator, there being mounted on the vibrating armature 3 and the end of the stem, a pair of platinum contact points 9. The stem 7 is preferably mounted in a threaded bushing 10 fixed in theplate 6, and adjacent the inner end is mounted a milled wheel 11 adapted to engage a spring finger 12 fixed to the inner surface of the plate 6 by means of the bushing 10, said spring finger co-operating with the milled wheel to to the degree of rotation'of the stem 7 by means of retarding effect thus produced and the clicks that are readily sensed as the stem is rotated.
The annular plate end plate 2 of the induction coil 1 and permanently spaced therefrom by means of one or more pins 13 which bridge the space separating the plates and secured at its ends thereto in a manner about to be described.

The pin thus em bedded projects from the rear face of the plate 6 and in the operation of assembling the parts, the outer end of the pin abuts against the plate 2 of the induction coil. The outer end of the pin 13 is tapped, as shown at 14c (Fig. 1) and a screw 15 is inserted through the plate 2 from the oppo site side thereof and'turned into the tapped recess 14. A connection of this kind is substantially permanent after the assembly of the apparatus has been completed inasmuch as there are no connecting members such as screws or the like extending through the plate 6 and exposed on the outer surface thereof. Thus, the possibility of undesired tampering with and disconnection of the partsis prevented by persons bent on investigating the interior of the device.
Referring now more in detail to the constructlon of the vibrator, the same may be described as a metallic strip or leaf which is fixed at its outer end and free to vibrate under the magnetic influence of the core of the coil 1. It was also pointed out that the vibrator consists of an arm 3 extending parallel to and spaced from the plate 2 of the coil. This arm 3 is'the free end portion of a strip of metal which is bent or formed at its outermost end in rectangular form, thus providing a'hollow or box-like extremity 16. This formation is obtained by bending the end portion, first at right angles to the free vibrating arm 8, then bending it again parallel to the arm, and still again at right angles so that the extremity of the strip abuts against the arm 3at a distance from the outer end thereof. One of the portions 17 parallel with the arm 3 forms a base plate and is provided with ears 17 17 (Fig. 2) through which small screws 18, 18 extend into the plate 2. Passing through the vertical and parallel wall portions of the box-like extremity 16 and anchored in the plate 2 adjacent the periphery thereof is a larger screw 19 having a square head serving as an adjustment member, as will presently be pointed out. Bearing in mind that the metallic strip of which the vibrator is made is more or less resilient, it will be seen that by varying the pressure exerted against the outer portion of the arm 3 through the medium of the screw 19, a definite effect is produced upon the vibratory action of the arm. In the first place, the abutting end portion of the strip bearing against the arm 3 intermediate the screw 19 and the free end portion of the arm acts as a fulcrunr with the result that by turning'the screw 19 inwardly against the adjacent'portion of the arm 3 the amplitude of vibration of said arm may be regulated inasmuch as it is clear that if the adjusting screw head is spaced away from the arm 3 the eilective length of the arm 3 extends beyond this fulcrum point, thus increasing the ellective length of the arm and hence the amplitude of vibration, whereas by tightening the screw 19 the length of the arm is shortened. thus decreasing the amplitude. And finally, if
an extreme pressure is exerted by the screw head, the metal of the strip adj aeent thereto and beyond the fulcrum point is actually depressed inwardly, thus throwing the free end portion or arm 3 outwardly in the opposite. direction and away from the end of the core 1. In this manner the desired adjustment of the vibrator may be determined by test, and when thus determined it will remain set without the necessity of further alteration. However, this adjustment is permanent, as distinguished from the adjustment or regulation by means of the stem 7 which controls the spacing of the platinum contact points, but not the predetermined amplitude of vibration of the metallic arm 3. (lbviously, the tension adjustment of the screw 19' would not be made other than by persons skilled in the art and in the act of making repairs which would ordinarily necessitate dismounting the complete vibrator unit.
Having described a preferred construetion embodying the invention, I claim- 1. In a device of the character described. and in combination, a coil, a vibrator mounted on the coil and comprising a resilient strip fixed at one end, a stop spaced from the end of the strip, and means interposed. between said fixed end and the stop, adapted adjustably to bow the portion of the strip between said end and the stop.
2. In a device of the character described, and in combination. a coil, a vibrator mounted on the coil and comprising a resilient strip, a stop, means for adjusting a portion of said strip toward or away from the coil, said stop being located between said means and the free end of the vibrator, whereby said stop and said means cooperate to vary the inclination of said resilient strip.
3. In a device of the character described, the combination of an induction coil including a vibrator comprising a resilient metallic arm mounted upon said coil in vibrating position, the fixed end of said strip being bent to form a box-like extremity, and an adjust ing screw extending therethrough and anchored in said coil.

In a device of the character described, the combination of an induction coil including a vibrating member comprising a metallic strip bent at its fixed end to form a boxlike extremity forming a base plate and a fulcrum point inwardly from the outer end of said arm, and an adjusting screw inserted through said box-like extremity intermediate the outer end of said arm and saidiuh crum point.
7. Ina device of the character described, the combination of an induction coil, a plate spaced from one end of the coil, a vibrator regulating member mounted in the plate, and means for connecting said plate with.
said induction coil comprising a pin embedded in the rear face of said plate and having detachable connection with said coil.

In a device of the character described, the combination of an induction coil, a plate spaced from one end of the coil, a regulating member mounted in the plate, and means for tilt connecting said plate with said induction coil comprising a pin embedded at one end in the rear surface of said plate and extending rearwardly and abutting at its outer end against said coil, and means for connecting the outer end of said pin with said coil.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination oian induction coil including a vibratory member mounted at one end of said coil, a plate spaced from the vibrator end oi the coil, a vibrator regulating member mounted in the plate, and means for connecting said plate with and spacing it from said induction coil comprising a pin embedded at one end plate and having screw threaded connection with said coil at its other end.
10. In a device of the combination of an induction coil including a plate having a vibrating member mounted thereon at one end of said coil, a closure plate spaced from said vibrator end of the coil, a vibrator regulating member mounted in the closure plate, and means for connecting said closure plate with said induction coil comprising a pin embedded at one end in the rear extending rearwardly and abutting at its outer end against the regulator plate, and a screw extending through said vibrator plate and engaging a tapped depression in the abutting end of said pin.
